In the wayback machine, for me that would be the mid-70’s, a stop in Lordsburg was pretty fun. There was a swinging Mexican food joint on the road through town. Stopping there was an event – a great break from the dusty summer travels. Then I-10 became what it is today and now this town is just sad. People just don’t leave the interstate. Even the Kentucky Fried Chicken joint and the Valero Gas Station have dried up and nearly blown away. It doesn’t seem that the young and those able to make a change can avoid the lure of getting on that same killing interstate to find somewhere else. We stubbornly continue to stop in Lordsburg for a meal. If we could find any, we’d get gas there too. For an army that travels on ... read more

HAMILTON CALHOUN McCOMAS He had just turned sixteen years old when he pulled out of Cabell County, West Virginia bound for Texas with three of his brothers. It was February of 1847 and they were going off to war with Mexico. It was a fine way for a young man to commence a lifetime of work dedicated to the best of intentions. Ham, as he was known in his youth, was born in 1831. It was the same year that his uncle, David McComas, wrote a well-reasoned piece about the right of South Carolina to secede from the union. Thirty years later some other politicians pulled that article out of the library, dusted it off and used it to start the War Between the States. When Ham got back from Mexico he sobered up, ... read more

TWO DOLLARS Tom Ketchum and his merry band were broke as usual. They figured on robbing a train as a simple solution to their poverty, and as usual they figured to rely upon their malicious animal magnetism rather than upon any sort of native cunning to pull it off. Just past 6pm on Dec 9, 1897 two of the outlaws, Dave Atkins and Ed “Shoot ‘Em Up Dick” Cullen, entered the train station at Steins Pass. Momentarily they make small talk with the depot agent, Charlie St John and his wife Daisey. When they figure it is safe to do so the outlaws pull their guns and rob the petty cash box of $9. Sam Ketchum arrives at the station about 8pm and they decide to rob the express office too. The cash box ... read more

After celebrating a wonderful Thanksgiving in Iowa with Joan's cousins we headed for Kansas City where we spent the weekend with good friends from Joan's college days. We are now in New Mexico and based on the weather reports it appears we left Chicagoland just in time to stay ahead of the cold weather!!! Our next stop is Tubac Arizona where we will meet up with Dick and Jennifer Bek who also decided to abandon the midwest for a warmer climate. Then we will spend a week in Palm Springs where we will celebrate Joan's Birthday with our maid of honor and her husband. We hope all of you had a Happy Thanksgiving and like us have a lot to be thankful for. Please stay tuned because we have just started this Odyssey so there will ... read more

Distance Traveled: 410 miles Arizona: Gila Bend, Buckeye, Phoenix, Mesa, Florence, Tucson, Benson, Tombstone, Bisbee, Douglas New Mexico: Rodeo, Lordsburg We elected not to eat breakfast at the Space Age Restaurant (imagine that) and decided instead to take a couple of pictures in front of the plate metal dinosaur sculpture at the local gas station. Then, we headed off to Phoenix. In keeping with our vow of not eating at a chain restaurant, we ended up at Linda's which was good old fashioned breakfast food in a tiny building. There were about 7 tables and the bathroom had one of those old fashioned towel dispensers where the used towel rolls back up into the dispenser. All in all, though, the food was great, and they had FREE mimosas - can't beat that!! As we rode along, ... read more

Nice driving today! Lots of mountains and great views. Once again we were in the middle of nowhere but beautiful. After crossing El Paso it was very difficult to find a radio station only in english. Not that it really matters, but just like in portuguese and english some types of music are just too much for Terry's and mine taste. The kids are doing great for the amount of driving they are enduring, but at night, they just want to play, jump, be loud and all the stuff they are supposed to be doing during the day but they can't. We can't complain. They like the trip so far. Lucas is usually busy with his electronics and is enjoying the trip as well. The car is doing great, so we decided not to push it ... read more
