Thursday, 16 July, 2020 We had a pleasant drive from Bryce Canyon south to Alt 89 and on to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We saw evidence along the way of the awful forest fires they had a month or so ago. Parking was a bit inconvenient at the Canyon Village due to road construction, so Kerry and Timmy walked from the parking area to the Lodge patio to view the canyon from there. The drive from the North Rim to Page, AZ, seemed to take forever, but we were just tired and the road was bumpy and winding. It was a relief to at last pick up some groceries at Walmart and settle into our spot at the campground. Friday, 17 July, 2020 We drove south from Page to Flagstaff where we headed ... read more

Friday, 13 June, 2014 It was a long slog through Oklahoma, with welcome small bits of smooth highway and miles and miles of bone-jarring interstate. The road through Oklahoma City was the worst, with construction zones and terribly cracked pavements. We stopped at the Texas Welcome Center near Alanreed, TX, where Sean enjoyed the observation deck overlooking the vast southern prairie. We continued on to Amarillo, where we stopped for the night. After suppers and showers a rain storm came through with high winds and steady rain. Saturday, 14 June The high winds continued all day, sustained at 30-35 mphs with gusts of over 40 mph. Once into New Mexico, the terrrain becomes hillier, so between the headwinds and the hills, our gas mileage was lousy. It was hard to maintain speed bucking those winds, too. ... read more

So my car (her name is Phat Patti) is loaded down with all our usual road trip stuff and my birthday present! A brand new Nikon camera and all kinds of stuff for it. I couldn't wait to take photos with it. We hit the road around 4am. Picked up Uncle Buddy who promptly went to sleep immediately as he had been at the Aerosmith concert in Dallas till 2am. We took the northern route out through West Texas and Albuquerque. Quick stops for gas and grub - didn’t make any fun stops as we have seen this route a few times. We made very good time and got into Gallup, NM about 5pm their time. Checked into the Sleep Inn right off of 40 with a Shell station in the same general area - good ... read more

On April 7th, Kris and Ed joined us at Willow Beach Campground which is located in Arizona , just over the border from Boulder City, Nevada. The campground is a striking one with spires raising up from a high desert floor. The beach part of the name refers to the shoreline of the Colorado River which flows out of Black Canyon. The campsites are a steep 7/10 of a mile up from the river. We had three days packed with adventure. Day one was a visit and tour of the Hoover Dam. This is an amazing structure. The base of the dam is 600+ feet thick and narrows to 45' at the top. If you visited the dam before 2010 there has been a major change. The road across the dam is not used for through ... read more

We woke up at 6am, with a goal to depart by 8am. We even ate breakfast at the KOA kitchen (very good btw, and inexpensive). Alas, we didn't get out until 8:30 (which I still count as pretty good). We did NOT have to mess with the bike rack today other than to re-attach the rope that we had to remove for the tent end. Bike rack held up all day... that sound is Tony breathing a big sigh of relief. Our first stop was Meteor Crater. Already by the time we got there at about 10 it was 95 degrees. We went outside on the rim trails to get pictures and view the crater. Really neat stuff. Then we went in and enjoyed the museum (including a 20 minute not so great quality informational video). ... read more

We decided yesterday afternoon to make an early start today so that we could visit Petroglyph National Monument, just west of Albuquerque on Interstate 40, before it got too hot. It was a good plan and we were at Rinconada Canyon by just after 9.00am but ... it was already stinking hot!! Not to be deterred, we made sure our water bottles were full and set off on the 21/2-mile round trip on an unpaved trail. The outward bound trail along the base of the escarpment was pretty heavy going in loose sand. There were petroglyphs (Native American and Spanish) all the way along the escarpment with an impressive concentration of petroglyphs at the furthest point of the walk. On our outward bound walk we talked to a couple who advised us that we could have ... read more

After leaving Sealy, I went to Austin and stayed at John and Beth's. They have a great place, large grounds and lots of outbuildings. They also have chickens and a small garden. Good news I got to see most of the relatives who live in Austin and attend Anna Mc graduation party. Missed Lalla and Matt's boys. Bad news I had a serious brake problem. John found me a mobile mechanic who worked most of Saturday and had me out on schedule on Sunday. Crossed most of Northwest Texas to arrive at Palo Duro Canyon on Monday. I was impressed with the wildflowers along the way. We think of blue bonnets when we think of wildflowers in Texas but there are many others. Predominate colors when I came through were Red and Yellow although there were ... read more

Geo: 35.5278, -108.744After a breakfast of huevos rancheros we hit the road heading for the Arizona state line. We saw great scenery on our drive through western New Mexico and into Arizona. We made a stop at Meteor Crater between Winslow and Flagstaff. Meteor Crater is nearly one mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference and more than 550 feet deep. Meteor Crater is the breath-taking result of a collision between a piece of an asteroid travelling at 26,000 miles per hour and planet Earth approximately 50,000 years ago. Our friend Jim was here six months ago and raved about it. It was amazing. Far better than I thought it would be. On the way out Kim bought me a souvenir piece of the actual meteor that caused the crater. As we left the crater we stopped ... read more

There was heavy rain last night but the sky was clearing this morning when we packed up and got underway at 6 AM. Made it two hours down the road for our first gas stop and found a Denny's. Not as hot today, thank goodness. We didn't have as long of a ride today. Arrived at Gallup and the Historic El Rancho Hotel on Route 66 around 1PM. They gave us the neatest room. All of the rooms are named after old movie stars. We were in the Kirk Douglas room. It had a separate full kitchen and a little porch that opened up to the patio where there is a pool. Only four other rooms did that and nobody was at the pool. Got a late lunch at Earl's which is run by all Native ... read more

He was wearing only his pants and smoking in a nonsmoking building! So I backed out of my parking spot and went back to the front desk to change my room. Ordered pizza from Papa John for $16.54 and watched TV for about an hour. Then tried to go online. I could access my email but nothing else, so I went to bed to read a book for about an hour.... read more
