Day 4 - Tucumcari, NM to Gallup, NM
Published: June 25th 2010North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupThere was heavy rain last night but the sky was clearing this morning when we packed up and got underway at 6 AM. Made it two hours down the road for our first gas stop and found a Denny's. Not as hot today, thank goodness. We didn't have as long of a ride today. Arrived at Gallup and the Historic El Rancho Hotel on Route 66 around 1PM. They gave us the neatest room. All of the rooms are named after old movie stars. We were in the Kirk Douglas room. It had a separate full kitchen and a little porch that opened up to the patio where there is a pool. Only four other rooms did that and nobody was at the pool. Got a late lunch at Earl's which is run by all Native ... read more
RV Travels Gallop to Gallup - If you love Native American Art Leaving Flagstaff, happily coming down off mountains at last, we head across 40 East and detour North on 87 (You know we don’t like the roads most traveled). In this case, we should have stayed on 40. The journey through the Navajo Nation Reservation consists of bad roads after bad roads and more desert to look at. I know all the dishes in the cabinets and goods in the pantry will tumble out on my head if I forget to open doors carefully. However, we made a very interesting stop at the Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado. It is the oldest continuous operating trading post in the west. Beginning in 1876 Juan Hubbell traded in Navajo country and his story of settlement of the ... read more
October 20, 2009 Some parts of this trip have come as complete surprises…today we experienced this again! When we left Sedona this morning, we were headed for the Meteor Crater which was a few miles east of a town named Two Gun…just after Two Arrows…really! Anyway most of us thought this was going to be a small outpost with not a lot there except maybe some sci-fi nuts! What we actually found was this beautiful spot in the desert with a large complex surrounding an actual crater in the earth caused by a meteor over 50,000 years ago…it was fascinating!! There was a great speaker and movie and then a walk up onto the crater edge. It was interesting and fun and way more than we expected. We left there and headed on toward Gallup. ... read more
Hi Everybody! We are ready and rarin' to go. All our possessions are in storage, cars are sold, backpacks packed and ready. We leave Farmington on Sunday and leave the country on Tuesday. We will post some cool pics and a new entry from Capetown next week. Next week! Holy Cow, I can't believe it's here already. I'm excited and scared, packing up and going off to have an adventure is easier said than done. I guess that's why most people only dream about it instead of really doing it. It's exciting stuff. I'll "talk" to you all soon. Carolyn ... read more
Short Trails at Chaco Canyon
Published: February 9th 2009North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupShort Trails at Chaco Canyon Historical Park Una Vida Trail The Una Vida Trail is a one mile loop to a 100 room, 5 kiva ruin site at the east end of the remote Chaco Canyon Historical Park in northwest New Mexico. The trail head is in the parking lot of the Visitor Center, the first hiking opportunity when arriving. This site is in a natural state of preservation, having experienced little excavation or vandalism. Una Vida is thought to be located along an eight mile straight line that includes the Great Houses of Pueblo Bonito in the center and Penasco Blanco on the west end of Chaco Canyon. The structures are on a slight hill on the north side of the canyon. Roads connected the sites and perhaps there was line of sight communication. The ... read more
4 Corners...Rocks, rocks and more rocks!
Published: January 18th 2009North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupAll this area is pretty spectacular, known as the 4 Corners…Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. I mean where else can you have your body in 4 different States at one time. Throughout this area we pretty much camped the whole time which I thought was pretty good going considering the temperatures got down as low as 26F…we used all 4 sleeping bags and were glad that we decided to invest in an airbed. There were mornings when we woke to frozen bottles of water left on the table. Chaco Canyon - was a major center of Puebloan culture between AD 850 and 1250. The Chacoan sites are part of the homeland of Pueblo Indian peoples of New Mexico, the Hopi Indians of Arizona, and the Navajo Indians of the Southwest. Driving toward Monument Valley we ... read more
Route 66 New Mexico style
Published: July 27th 2008North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupOn the way to Gallup, we'd seen signs for the Zuni Pueblo outside of town. Our handy AAA guidebook (even if your car never needs towing, a membership in AAA is worth it just for these handy guides!) said that this was a very worthwhile sight so we set out early in the morning to see if even though it wasn't in our plans. I was very interested in seeing an active pueblo and was pretty excited. We drove about 45 minutes out of the way to discover that on Sunday mornings, none of the tourist things were open. We even had to have protein bars and soy milk for breakfast as we couldn't find a cafe. However, we did see several Indian men dressed in full native dress on their way to a ceremony. We ... read more
Acoma, the place prepared
Published: July 2nd 2008North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupOn our way home, we took a short side trip tp Acoma Pueblo, Sky City as it's also called, or Ak'u in the Keresan Language of the people who have made their home there for over 1000 years. Acoma sits upon a 350 foot rock mesa with sheer sides. It is the oldest continually inhabited town in North America. It's people migrated from the north in the distant past and called it Haak'u or Ak'u, the place prepared, as they believe that it was there, prepared and waiting for them. When we arrived at Acoma, we made aquaintence with a local artist/activist who informed us of all this. He introduced us to the saying : Ammu Han'u, Aamuu Haatsi. Beloved Land, Beloved People. This reflects the worldview of the Aku'me, people of Acoma. The inseparable connection ... read more
Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary
Published: May 29th 2008North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupFecal Engineer. That's my new job title. I say it without resentment, more with a laugh, as I plan in the next week to begin entering some of the wolves' enclosures to collect their excretions, and furthermore be able to analyze how their diet is treating them. Other chores including wolves will be morning rounds (fecal finds, water hauling, health check, and to even socialize with the wolves). Today, I begin my first venture into the Wolf Kitchen where all the food is prepared. Weekly we receive donations from local stores and butchers of scrap or rotten meat. Our job is to separate it from edible and useless. Go meat! SOMEDAY'S Update: I'm still trying to get acquainted with the place. I think I am in a hurry it seems to take on all the tasks, ... read more
Santa Fe to Gallup NM and Finally Page AZ...Bucky has a birthday...
Published: May 11th 2008North America » United States » New Mexico » GallupSunday the 11th, the group arose bound and determined to make more than 200 miles, and were airborne at a record-early 9 am local from Santa Fe. This time the headwind finally abated and the turbulence was fairly mild. We made better time under less demanding conditions than probably any time since departing GAI, and certainly much better than the previous two days. We overflew the high desert in Canyonlands territory, with Geoff offering muttered curses for the poor visibility for photography that the elderly windows of 624 could offer him and his ten pounds of cameras and film. The group sent out a "safe arrival" ping from the SPOT transmitter in Gallup NM at 1:05 EDT -- halfway between Albequerque and Flagstaff on the AZ-NM border, close to Four Corners, and a mainstay of the ... read more
