Hysterical Journey To Historic Places
Published: December 5th 2012North America » United States » Nevada » Carson CityAN INDIAN FOR BREAKFAST Silver mining in the Comstock Lode at Virginia City was booming by 1859, but it came at a dear cost to the Paiutes living nearby. Traditional grazing lands were over run, trees that supplied pine nuts for their sustenance were cut down for lumber, wild game animals disappeared, Indian livestock was stolen, and personal abuses were suffered. Depredations were also visited upon the white community. By the spring of 1860 smoldering resentment led to a gathering of the tribes at Pyramid Lake for talk of war. During the war council two young Paiute girls fell into the clutches of ruthless white men and were being held captive at Williams Trading Post on the Carson River. It was a notorious hellhole. During the course of a horse trade gone ... read more
Hysterical Journey To Historic Places
Published: November 18th 2012North America » United States » Nevada » Carson CityJOHN COFFEE HAYS John Coffee Hays was the genuine wolf when it came to fighting fierce Indians. He was a retired Captain in the Texas Rangers and during the War with Mexico had attained the rank of colonel in the Army of the Republic of Texas. Andrew Jackson was a great uncle. After Texas was made safe, sort of, he got married and moved to California. Col. Hays happened to be in Virginia City, Utah Territory on May 14, 1860 when a man named C. T. Lake arrived with news that Major Ormsby’s entire command had been slaughtered by angry Paiutes on the Truckee River. Lake and 5 other men had been detailed as the rear guard with orders to hold the high ground near Pinnacle Mount, but when they saw what ... read more

Day 29 McArthur, CA to Carson City, V
Published: May 30th 2012North America » United States » Nevada » Carson CityDay 29 McArthur, CA to Carson City, NV Charlie made the call to find out if Lassen Volcanic NP had opened - - It hadn't, so we just drove to Lake Tahoe. Along the way, we had several good shots of Mt Shasta, Pitt River and its Falls, and of Lassen Peak. We drove around the west and south sides and part way north up the east side of Lake Tahoe. We could see the lake in some places and actually found two places where we could pull off and get nice photos. While it is a truly beautiful lake, it lacks the stunning beauty of Crater Lake. Coming down to Carson City was an 8 mile long 6% grade - - I put the truck into 2nd gear and let it walk down at 50 ... read more
Snow Covered Roads and Beautiful Lakes
Published: May 30th 2012North America » United States » Nevada » Carson CityMonday, 28 May It was 33 degrees this morning at 6, but had warmed into the upper 40’s by the time we left the campground. The north road into Crater Lake National Park is closed due to heavy snow cover, so we went around to the west and up to the south entrance. As the elevation rose, so did the depth of the snow drifts along the sides of the roads and in the woods. Inside the park you could only see the roof of the Visitor Center and the Administration Building. The parking lot was mostly cleared, but the drifts were well over the tops of the cars. We drove up to the Rim Lodge and to Discovery Point and took pictures of the magnificent lake and surrounding mountains. There was only 1 mile of ... read more

Our weekend in Logan
Published: October 19th 2010North America » United States » Nevada » Carson CityTwo flat tires in two weeks and now this......sigh. We got into Logan on Friday the 15th. We decided to get a hotel room because it was our anniversary (our 5th) and besides we didn't feel like putting up the trailer. So with excitement and anticipation we whipped that trailer into the hotel parking lot and when the back of the car/trailer hit the curb, we (I) completely destroyed the electrical cord. It was obliterated (see below). So our 2 hours of relaxing before getting together with AJ were spent instead finding an RV repair shop. Thankfully we weren't in Mexican Water, AZ. I doubt they had an RV repair shop, But Logan did and the cord was replaced. Then, since AJ had a tough week and we had an expensive AND tough week (that trailer ... read more
