For his birthday we took Sean and Liz to the Murder Mystery Theater. We dressed up as gangsters and flappers. Dave wanted to be a flapper, but I said no, I would look better in a boa. He had to be a gangster. It was a little scary how happy he was about that once he got into character. Liz and I looked amazing in our flapper clothes, and frankly I don't understand why boas ever went out of style. Liz was a very fetching flapper, Sean was chairman of our team and Dave had the biggest gun in the joint (and he knows how to use it). I was the widow, Mrs. (Su-Su-Sugar) Cookie. Mr. Cookie and I named our two children Marzipan Wafer Cookie and Vanilla Cookie....(you'll have to ask me sometime). I don't ... read more

It was 16 degrees and windy, so it seemed like a good day to drive to Breckenridge to see the annual snow sculpture exhibition. Good that we have 4-wheel drive. We got to Breckenridge around lunchtime, so we stopped at the Whale's Tail restaurant. Very appropriately named because coincidently there was a pile of snow shaped exactly like a whale with particular emphasis on that whale's tail and it was right in front of the restaurant! After lunch we found the snow sculptures. One of my favorites was the one from Alaska illustrating Jack London stories. I think it was Jack London. Didn't he write the short story "For want of a Match" or something similar? The guy gets lost on the trail and it's cold and snowy (he was probably on his way to Breckenridge) ... read more

Jan 28th, 2011 Donna my Bride, Shane my middle Son and Jeff Carr, my Brother in Law , who retired Dec 2010 . Friday it was 67 degrees in Denver so we decided to go skiing at Keystone. It was a beautiful day , the weather was perfect and the slopes had lots of snow. We stayed on the slopes for five hours with a 30 minute break-no broken bones. There was a few falls, I would like to blame someone for my falls, but I guess I will take full blame for them. Jeff had not been on skis for about four years and he did great, a few falls, but nothing major. What a great day we had!!... read more

Donna & I decided we would take the AMtrak from Lodi to Sacramento to meet John & Patrica Baldridge for lunch. The ride was about 40 minutes, so we thought we should have a drink-Donna had a red wine and I had a beer. John & Patricia were there waiting for us. We had a nice lunch at the Delta King and then we walked around Old Sacramento for a few hours. The weather was nice and it was very enjoyable. We took the train back to Lodi and guess what, it was raining in Lodi. We walked back to the house in the rain. It was exhilirating .... read more

November 29th 2010

Thanksgiving Day 2010 finally arrived. We have been chopping, cleaning, waxing for days and days and then we cleaned some more. We were at turkey dinner minus 10 minutes. The table set, the drinks poured (I always hated that when I was little - the part about having the drinks poured way before dinner, because the warm drinks got cold and the cold drinks got warm. Why is that? Well....that's a question for another day because now it's turkey dinner minus 5 minutes). We're all set for our 10 guests, wait....there may be more. Yes!!! the Dahl's/Womble's are coming. Quick!!! Set the table for 5 more....but wait.....a girlfriend is coming too. Quick, find another napkin. But everything was delicious with hardly a leftover, in spite of the (gasp) 25 pound gobbler. Ok....dinner is over, but Darla ... read more

November 23rd 2010

It was a harrowing day. We spent the entire day preparing for, eating and returning from lunch. Such is the daily life of retired folk. We got a call last night from Hugh and Marlene Martin; friends who live in Pueblo, CO. They were in.......wait for it............BRENTWOOD, California!! Just about a 40 minute drive from Lodi. We left home at 10am, did some errands, got a Lodi library card for Dave :) then drove to Brentwood. And we would have been on time if not for the tiniest mistake from the navigator. We talked and talked, finally ordered lunch, ate and ate some more, talked and talked some more, left for home and got back to the Lodi house around 4:30. After spending the day planning and eating lunch, we skipped dinner. PS We also met ... read more

We got up early last week and headed out to Yosemite National Park. It's a 3-hour trip regardless of which of the three entrances you drive to. We took HWY 120 - the trip took 3 hours. The first thing we did was hike up to Vernal Fall bridge. It's an easy hike with a nice view, I told Dave. I was amazed at how much steeper it got since the last time I "walked" it. Then we went to lunch at the Ahwahnee. Best French onion soup ever! Soup and sandwich - only $50. But what a view. Then we drove through the valley while I pointed out to Dave most of the places I had ever lived. With all those moves, it's amazing I ever had a chance to find a job. From the ... read more

October 19th 2010

Two flat tires in two weeks and now this......sigh. We got into Logan on Friday the 15th. We decided to get a hotel room because it was our anniversary (our 5th) and besides we didn't feel like putting up the trailer. So with excitement and anticipation we whipped that trailer into the hotel parking lot and when the back of the car/trailer hit the curb, we (I) completely destroyed the electrical cord. It was obliterated (see below). So our 2 hours of relaxing before getting together with AJ were spent instead finding an RV repair shop. Thankfully we weren't in Mexican Water, AZ. I doubt they had an RV repair shop, But Logan did and the cord was replaced. Then, since AJ had a tough week and we had an expensive AND tough week (that trailer ... read more
