We continued our back roads trip through the Nebraska Sandhills this morning, passing through several small towns, then stopped for lunch in Grand Island, Nebraska. We started east on I-80 from there but in the afternoon the wind picked up, and with all the passing trucks on the interstate it made for difficult driving, so we checked into a campground a little earlier than we planned. ... read more

Blog 08-21-17 Solar Eclipse Ginnie and I made it to Lincoln Sunday afternoon after a really tiring drive. There was traffic then the last hour was grueling with a strong side wind. It is a struggle to keep the camper on the road and between the lines so by the time we got to the campground, we set up and callapsed. Dave and Lisa (my son and daughter-in-law) were in Lincoln for the eclipse and they came to the campground and brought us dinner. We had a great meal and visiting time then it was get down to planning how we were going to be able to best see the eclipse. The weather forcast was iffy for mid-day so we had to plot out a possible road trip. We agreed to meet at 7:45am on Monday ... read more

August 8, 2017 Weather: 74 and sunny driving through Wyoming, 70s Nebraska Hours Driving: 12 hours States Drive Thru: Utah and Wyoming and Nebraska Miles: 860 miles Restaurants: Tasty BBQ Movies: Games: Books: Dunkirk (Matt), Bow Wow (Bee), Woof (Ben) Hotel: Fairfiedld inn As we make our way home from Utah, we climb mountain roads and descend into valleys. The landscape changes at every curve causing me to wonder why it is so different yet so close together. Green jagged mountains, strange hill-like mountains with little vegetation, mounds of sandcastle-like formations, piles of broken rock, red rock, layered rock as if we are driving through a dried up ocean floor and rock that makes you wonder how it came to be the odd shape or formation balancing on the precipice of crushing our car. Then, flatlands ... read more

At first it appears ordinary. The grass blowing in the breeze is like the rest. But as those places with natural and/or historical relevance often do upon closer examination, the plants and animals on the grounds of the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center begin to tell their tale. When walking down the unpaved slope from the parking area to the visitor’s center, the first thing one appreciates is the waist-high and sometimes shoulder-high grass on either side of the path. There is an immediate sense of unfamiliarity, regardless of how rural or cultured an upbringing someone might possess. The space inside the visitor center, which is largely constructed of recycled material, is open and pleasantly simple, much like the rest of the property. There are hands-on exhibits inside that include a full size buffalo and a ... read more

After thoroughly enjoying a week at the Farm Island Recreation Area in Pierre SD, I headed for the Lincoln NE area to, ta-dah, visit the state capitol among other attractions. The drive was longer than I was willing to make in a single day (457 miles and almost 10 hours with the Pilgrim in tow and stops for fuel, food and necessary breaks), so I made an overnight reservation at Wacky West Travel Park in Valentine NE. The manager had a spot long enough for the Ram with the Pilgrim attached (so I would be spared from uncoupling the trailer from the truck) and also had travel information about the Valentine area which I found appealing. I just might stop for 3 or 4 nights my next time through the area. Resuming my journey on Thursday, ... read more

Geo: 40.8136, -96.7077If I said corn again today, would you believe me? I'm not lyen' , honest. We left Davenport, Iowa at 8:00 AM and 64 degrees. We got an early start today because we were up early, thanks to the time change. So, off we went, down the interstate, headed for Lincoln, Nebraska. We drove well over 300 miles through…ah…you guessed it, corn fields. I am now loving these corn fields. They are pretty, with the golden corn flowers blooming on each plant, casting a yellow haze over the fields like a shroud protecting the plants from the hot sun. As we moved further west, the flat planes began to roll a bit with small hills, undulating ever so gently over the ground. And by the time we reached the other side of the state, ... read more

Geo: 40.8136, -96.7077After a 4 hour drive from Missouri, through the southwest corner of Iowa, and into Nebraska, we arrived at Lincoln. We found a campground about 3 miles from campus, and checked in. We then drove back to campus and walked around. It was a large campus with all of the academic buildings co-located, and the football stadium right on the edge of campus. There is a cool area right off campus called Haymarket District with plenty of restaurants and bars. That is where we had lunch before heading back to the campground. We rode our bikes to a local sports bar for dinner and to watch UVA in the baseball championships, and the NBA Western ... read more

We didn’t have a long drive today (not like yesterday) and we were heading towards Perry, Iowa. This is where Theo’s father’s family is from. Theo had visited this place when he was 18 with his grandfather, brother, mom and dad. They stayed with extended family and met a lot of relatives. He tried to find the house he stayed in but we were unsuccessful. We did find the community center they played basketball at. After a quick tour we left and headed west towards Lincoln, NE. I must tell you that Theo had eaten at a place called Maid Rite. It is the home of loose meat (think sloppy joes minus the sloppy part) sandwiches. We found one on our way to Perry. I thought these little burgers were AWESOME!! Theo thought they were a ... read more
