Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Today, we woke to a relaxing morning at the RV site. Then, we drove to a Metro stop on the outside of the city, and took the train into St. Louis. The first thing we did was went up to the top of the "Gateway To The West" arch. We noted that the arch was started in 1963 and completed in 1965. I think I went there not too long after it opened....maybe 1968 (Mom, check me on this). But, this was Sheila's first trip. Awesome view of the city. Then, we did a riverboat tour along the Mississippi River, followed by lunch at the Budweiser Restaurant next to the Busch Stadium. We also toured the Old Courthouse, most famously known for housing the Dred Scott vs. Sanford case in 1847. This was the first case ... read more

St Louis – Missouri It’s up at 7am to get ready and get the Greyhound from Nashville to St Louis. We get a cab from the hostel and bid farewell to Ron the owner. The cabbie is an Indian guy from Bangalore who’s moved here from California and it’s really interesting to hear his view of the difference between the 2 parts of the US; California is expensive, more liberal and kinky while Nashville is easy going but safe, conservative and cheaper. The bus is pretty full and the trip takes us through the Great Plains (miles and miles of it with isolated and very clean, shining farms – shades of the Amish in Pennsylvania and we do see a sign saying Amish Food for sale. We travel through Kentucky, Indiana & Illinois into St Louis ... read more

Day 10 - July 6, 2013 Not much to write about today, we drove. Our longest driving day this trip! Over 830 miles! We sadly said goodbye to mom in St. Louis at about 5:15 am. We headed north. We drove, and drove, and drove some more. We made a few Geocaching stops, but other than that we just drove. We made it to the Mall of America in Bloomington, just outside Minneapolis, in time for a late lunch. We had no idea what we were in for. They have a huge amusement park in the center court of the mall. There is a roller coaster and about 20 other rides. They have an aquarium, a LEGOLAND area, and several movie theaters. We ate in the food court so that we could take it all in. ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Lessons learned & other observations:I don't usually do the blogging on vacation because I spend the evening hours researching our next day's itinerary. I have to write down all the available train schedules, restaurants & gelato places, etc. It's a tough job but someone has to do it. Mary & Paul went off on their own the third day in Italy and managed to take the wrong train thus ending up somewhere going the wrong way!Our first day in Sarlat, France was a market day. It was a little drizzly & I had my umbrella up, but people were everywhere. Not seeing very well in the middle of a square, I ended up tripping over some little old lady's shopping cart she was dragging behind her. Some stranger helped me up & I just ... read more

Geo: 38.6554, -90.4539In less than a week we will be off on our adventure.I can't believe it is here already. I don't feel prepared at all. I haven't made it past Bon Jour and Toilettes? Where did my study time go?For those of you who are interested, we leave Thursday, May 16 for Dordogne, France. For my family members who read Michael Crighton, that is where Timeline took place..along the Dordogne River. We will fly into Toulouse and rent a car to drive to Dordogne. Yes, I will be driving-eeck. At least they drive on the correct side of the road. Not like Ireland. We will be staying there for about 5 days, then we will fly to MIlan and stay in the Cinque Terre, Italy area. (Italian Riviera). In Italy we will travel by train, ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.199With thoughts of Willie Nelson in my head, we begin our little blog today. This is more of a test than anything ~ to see if everyone gets an email about this blog or an I-don't-know-what...but something is supposed to show-up in your email inbox. We'll see. All I know is Travelpod rocks. I've been addicted to it for about a year now but this is the first time I'll actually write as we travel... if we get Internet access occasionally, that is.So, what happened today? I worked until noon. It went quicker than I had anticipated. I had all the bags packed yesterday so I went home, did the last-minute house things, and then we showered Scaredy and Simon with lots of kisses and happy "We'll be backs!" I figure if I leave ... read more
