September 2009 After leaving the Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour we drove to the iconic landmark of St. Louis: The Gateway Arch. Construction began on February 12, 1963 and was completed on October 28, 1965. It stands 630 feet high. Beneath the Arch is the Museum of Westward Expansion. The museum details the history of the West during the 19th century. We saw displays depicting life of both the American Indians and pioneers. Early explorers like Lewis & Clark are highlighted. There is also a small room devoted to the history of baseball in St. Louis. While the museum is free, other choices all require a fee. On an earlier visit with our young boys we took the tram ride to the top of the Arch. This time around we did not repeat this adventure. However, if you ... read more

September 2009 The best part of any industrial tour is the free samples at the end, and of all the factory tours we have taken, nobody does free samples better than the Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour. On a rainy Labor Day weekend in St. Louis we took the Brewery Tour at the Anheuser-Busch plant with our best friends Rod & Mary. The plant is located just off I55 at Exit 206C. We arrived just after ten, and found the free tours were running every 15 minutes. Be sure to bring your walking shoes, and as in our case, your umbrella. This is not one of those faux industrial tours that transport you along on a tram viewing videos of what is happening elsewhere in the plant. Here you will experience a very well done factory tour. We ... read more

Short drive to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. A bit of a wait for our turn to ride up to the top of the arch, but made good use of our time in the gift shop and display area. We rode up to the top in a very, VERY small car that is rigged like a Ferris wheel chair so that is stays upright as it makes it’s way to the top of the curved arch. There is a small viewing area at the top of the arch with windows to look out. It is pretty neat up there and you can see quite a lot of the city. The Gateway Arch is really very much a symbol like Ellis Island in that many of the travelers going west passed through St. Louis. I had ... read more

Much to our disappointment, independence day has nothing to dwithin Will Smith or aliens! Most disappointing. We had a chance to stop for a bit of sightseeing on our way up the Mississippi to st louis today. We saw 'chain of rocks' bridge, a huge original bridge across the Mississippi now only open the walkers and cyclists it'san couple of miles in length. Needless to say we didn't walk the lot. With temperatures up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit we couldn't face it! Onwards towasaint loud Louis and our sesight sight of the day..... A giant catsup bottle. This may not sound as fantastic as it actually was but trust me when I tell you, it was very cool. Final stop was Cahokia. This is the remains of a huge city, spanning many acres. It's dominated by ... read more

We had a late night/early morning after Bernie watched the Richmond vs Fremantle game via the internet!! Unfortunately Richmond's winning streak was ended by the Dockers! After sleeping in a bit we ventured down to the lower lobby for our complimentary breakfast at the Hampton Inn. There was plenty of food to choose from, but we kept it simple opting for some fruit and a bit of cereal. After breakfast we took the car out of the Hampton's car park and headed off to Schiller's Camera Store. This time Bernie had called ahead to be certain that the lens was in stock before we drove right across town!! As we were driving to the store we found that we were actually travelling on one of the many roads designated as Historic Route 66. The Mother Road ... read more

After checking out of the State Capitol Inn, we left the car in their car park and walked over to the Old State Capitol to discover that they had a Civil War Medical Encampment set up in the grounds this weekend. Talking with the volunteers it seems that there is some Civil War re-enactment somewhere in the United States just about every week of the year!! We thought that we would just have a quick wander around the grounds and take a couple of photos of the volunteers in period costumes and the Old State Capitol from the outside. Just as we were about to leave, the guy on the gate asked if we had been into the Capitol building. When we said that we hadn't he encouraged us to go in before leaving. So we ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.1995/30/12 –So, today was another travel day. We left Salina, MO at 8:30 AM, and the temperature was a comfortable 62 degrees. We got onto I-70 and headed for St. Louis, MO. The first part of the drive was similar to yesterday…flat golden fields of grain mixed with dark green fields of corn. As we moved eastward, the corn got taller, and I wondered if the climate was warmer here than in west Kansas. We saw a farmer harvesting his grain…no idea if it was oats or barley, but I was quite sure it was not wheat. And as we continued east, the plains began to ripple with hills and dales, and fields became grazing land for cattle, with green grass to eat, ponds to drink from and large green trees to keep cool. ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.199We've been home for a bit now ~ actually, a couple of weeks. Basically, we had a nice vacation. We enjoyed seeing my family in Seattle, we luved-luved our day together in downtown Seattle, we thought sailing out of Vancouver was beautiful, the ship was beautiful, Mexico was pretty-much what we expected the "poorer" side of Mexico to be, Carnival Cruise Lines did not disappoint in service and amenities, and we spent much less than I had budgeted, and overall... everything went smoothly.... no bad hotel rooms, missed flights, train wrecks, or stolen purses. It was all good. Was it fantastic and so overwhelming wonderful that we were left in a fog of wonderful feelings (like our honeymoon cruise two years ago)??? Ummmm... NO. Was it a good cruise and a good experience with ... read more
