Wanna know why I haven't updated in so long? Possibly because of frustration! I just started writing a new entry. I had a few paragraphs written. Then the computer wigged out and I lost it all. :-/ Harumph. Ok, so maybe that isn't why I haven't written (although that really did just happen). I could say things were busy. Cause they were there for a while. But it did become less hectic. But then I didn't have much exciting news to report. And when I did, I just never felt like writing about it. However, two things have made me decide to write this now. First of all, my friend who is currently living in Japan and keeping a blog about her times there (who also hadn't updated in forever) finally wrote a new entry, thus ... read more

Hey all! Sorry, yet again, for the long space gap between entries. This got even more hectic shortly after my last post. I moved again, for the final time, so I am now back on the refuge, living in the new bunk house. It is quite nice! :) For a while, I had been hoping to have the opportunity to do something to help with this whole oil spill disaster going on in the gulf. I was given the chance in early June. My boss called me on Sunday June 6th and asked if I would be interested in doing a 2 week detail for the oil spill, walking transects on beaches, and conducting bird surveys. I said yes. Monday was spent doing lots of online training and then Tuesday was my first day. Normally, a ... read more

This morning Barbara and I, in our Fleetwood Terra and Leta and Shelby in their Fleetwood Pace Arrow, leave Olive Branch, Ms. on our long awaited retirement trip across North America, three Canadian Provinces to the last great wilderness, ALASKA!!! We will be spending the night in Warrenton, Mo. at the Flying J T/S. As I was looking at tomorrows route I remembered some great neighbors and friends, that had relocated to the Kansas City area several years ago. After some help from our daughter, Faith, back home we had their phone number, and were able to get in touch with them. Of course they insisted we stop to visit them on our way through the area.... read more

4:30AM came REAL early. . . made it to Buck Sullivans by 7am. Left the motorhome and drove the Lil Truk to StoneRidge RV park where Diane and Charles were. Stayed with them until I got a call from Cedric at Buck Sullivan's letting me know the motorhome was ready. Problem seems resolved. Thank you WorkHorse. Back to the RV Park and had pizza for dinner. Headed out to meet Barbara and Jack in Olive Branch, MS tomorrow. Leaving Charles and Diane here as they are headed home to Kennesaw from here. For those who have been wondering why the blog posts have been few and far between for the past month or so, I am very sorry. Mainly, I've just been super busy with work. And when I'm not working, I just haven't felt up to writing. Anyway, lots has been going on. Even since the last time I wrote, in mid-may. We are still desperately trying to keep the chicks alive, but are not having much success. It can definitely get a bit frustrating, but even so I am still so glad to have this job. I know that we are trying the best we can. Hopefully by the end of this nesting season we will have figured something out that works. The main goal has been the nest barriers. The thought was build a barrier ... read more

I wanted to write about my first time doing a frog survey, so here goes. It was about a month ago that I actually did it. Whoops. Sorry for the time delay. Anywho, on a wednesday night, around the end of april I believe, Scott was going to be conducting a nationwide frog survey on the refuge and so I asked if I could join him. I had choir rehearsal that night so I had to join him after he had already started. Ended up that by the time I got out into the field, he was finished with 3 of the points. The first point I went to with him, I thought maybe the frog survey wasn't really all that exciting. The spot was on the refuge, but very near the highway, and so the ... read more

What a great day! After our bit of a fiasco yesterday, today was wonderful. Travelled south on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Native Americans, Kaintuck boatmen, post riders, government officials and soldiers all moved across this trail, creating a link between the Mississippi Territory and the fledgling United States. We travelled through forests, cypress swamps and farmland to meander through the rock-studded hills of Tennessee, cotton fields in Alabama, and Mississippi's marshes. And Robbie, eat your heart out, we went to Tupelo Mississippi, saw the house where Elvis was born, the church he went to etc. It was interesting. Robbie, bought you something. Took lots of pictures but cannot download them yet. Marcel, I tried very hard to get a picture of a wild turkey in flight, tried about 10 times, and so far, only got the ... read more

Phew. Sorry that it has been an age and a half since the last entry. I thought I was busy in the beginning, but the last month or so has just been insane!! I kept meaning to write and then whenever I had a down-moment I just didn't feel up to it. But I shall try to do it now. Things have been busy, but really really good. I still am beyond in love with this job. I am learning so much and everyone here is super nice and just wonderful. As we progress into the middle of nesting season, things really started to pick up. We have multiple nests going, and then chicks started hatching and now we are doing everything we can to keep chicks alive, which is easier said than done. The majority ... read more

Tital mileage: 2,150 Texas: Dallass, Terrell, Mineola, Longview, Marshall Louisiana: Greenwood, Shreveport, Minden, Arcadia, Ruston, Monroe, Rayville, Tallulah Mississippi: Vicksburg, Jackson Today's drive was entirely Highway 80. We got a little later start than normal and took our time, ate breakfast with Jake and Lauren, and hit the road by 11:30. It was great driving through the old towns and seeing the historic buildings. Many of them have significance during the Civil War, and prior. Arcadia, LA even claims Bonnie and Clyde were found dead in their area, and the local funeral home embalmed their bodies before sending them to their hometowns for burial. We also by chance realized that we were passing through Tim McGraw's hometown: Start, LA. Unfortunately, our late start caught up with us and we ran out of daylight. Old Highway 80 ... read more
