From Tony Bourdain's brother: “Here is this guy who has had these travel experiences that nobody could ever have. And yet, in some respects, I've had better travel experiences in the last couple of years. Because I can wander aimlessly for five hours alone or with my wife in Berlin, or in Barcelona, or in Paris. I've done it, you know? I just love wandering around aimlessly. Going down streets I haven't seen. And he couldn't do that. He never got a chance to wander around the streets of Paris or Berlin or Hanoi. I have had that chance and I've done it. I don't know if it's better or worse or just different. I don't know. But it was ironic.”Interesting? If you think about it, how would someone like Bourdain ... read more

Geo: 32.2987, -90.1805This was an uneventful day. Pretty much a travel day. We left Ft Worth this morning at 8:15 and 55 degrees and headed east. The plan was to go into Dallas and take a look around the city. For two reason, this didn't happen. For one, we were in rush hour traffic, and this would have made a sight-seeing tour of the city impractical. In addition, we simply passed the city before we realized it. We saw it from a distance, on I-20. This will be the second time we pass it on the outer edge and don't go in. Next time, it is a must. The east side of Texas is very different from the west side. The deserts and the prairies are replaced by lush green fields with lots of pine and hardwood ... read more

The drive on I-20 from Vicksburg MS to LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground in Jackson MS on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 was about fifty miles and took about an hour. LeFleur's Bluff State Park is set amid the hustle and bustle of the City of Jackson and is somewhat of an island in the storm. The campground is situated about a mile from the entrance and borders a quiet lake with many lakeside campsites. The facility was mostly vacant and found me chatting with only two other campers during my week-long stay. Thursday found me heading for downtown Jackson to visit the Old (State) Capitol Museum. As with most downtown attractions in most cities, parking is a challenge – at least until the visitor learns the lay of the land. I found, however, a vacant, no-charge ... read more

Picked up the car at the Marriott and left Memphis around midday. In our trusty Nissan we left Tennessee on Highway 61 and went on through the green cottonfields of mississippi! We stopped over for lunch in Helena , Arkansas - a short hop across the Big Muddy. Had a great cajun lunch: blackened catfish and seafood gumbo. Then to Delta Blues museum with all the history of residents Robert Johnson and Sonnyboy Williamson. Crossed back into MS and 'revisited' Highway 61! half an hour later we reached Clarksdale and the famous crosroads of 61 and 49 where Robert Johnson got down on his knees and sold his soul to the devil. Powered on to Jackson and after enduring a massive traffic jam, came to see that although Jackson has a beautiful downtown, on a Friday ... read more

The day started early with breakfast downstairs before I headed to the Hertz place to collect our Hire Car. They gave me a Buick Enclave which is a stationwagon that is large enough and has really nice interor. It’s raining in New Orleans this morning so good to be leaving town on NYE and heading north to Jackson which is the capital city of Mississippi. The drive took about 3.5 hours and as we crossed the border leaving Louisiana we stopped by a welcome centre which had a lovely lady who offered me coffee and maps / information etc. Kerry said she was Dolly Parton’s sister (without he gifts !) as she gave us all a Mississippi pin and a Happy NYE farewell y’all. The rain had eased on the drive and we had overcast skies ... read more

Tital mileage: 2,150 Texas: Dallass, Terrell, Mineola, Longview, Marshall Louisiana: Greenwood, Shreveport, Minden, Arcadia, Ruston, Monroe, Rayville, Tallulah Mississippi: Vicksburg, Jackson Today's drive was entirely Highway 80. We got a little later start than normal and took our time, ate breakfast with Jake and Lauren, and hit the road by 11:30. It was great driving through the old towns and seeing the historic buildings. Many of them have significance during the Civil War, and prior. Arcadia, LA even claims Bonnie and Clyde were found dead in their area, and the local funeral home embalmed their bodies before sending them to their hometowns for burial. We also by chance realized that we were passing through Tim McGraw's hometown: Start, LA. Unfortunately, our late start caught up with us and we ran out of daylight. Old Highway 80 ... read more

My Goodness! I would never have thought that taking a road trip would be so much work. It is supposed to be a vacation, an extended vacation. I have been planning this trip for months, but actually getting out of here has been quite a task. I thought two weeks would be plenty of time for the kids to withdraw from school and be in enrolled California by March 2nd, thereby missing only 5 days of school because the schools in California were out the 16th through the 20th. We may get there by Monday. We will not be making as many stops as I had hoped, and we will be taking a shorter route. However, we will be see sections of the Historic Route 66 , Sedona, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon. I plan to ... read more
