This will be my last entry from the US. I can't believe it. I've spent the day pretty quietly, pottering around the house here and chatting with Steph. Only managed to get out to the local supermarket - past the alleged ten storey undergound prison! - and cook dinner. My first homemade meal in weeks!! I called Jon in DC to say goodbye, but somehow it doesn't seem real. It was nice talking to him and it made me realise I can keep in touch with the friends I've met here. But still it will feel weird being so far from where I've decided is my true home. I will miss it and them. I can't connect with the thought that I'll be back in the UK and having to sort out so many things so ... read more

It's late here but I felt I should scribble a few words before I go to bed. Tomorrow is my last proper day in the US and it doesn't seem real that my trip is ending. Today was a very fun day. We went up to the Interstate State Park (really!?) and took a walk by the river up and down the snowy trail. Animal tracks traced the ice and the pines cast amazing, flame-like shadows over the frozen surface. Utterly beautiful. Minnesota is a delightful patchwork of lakes, waterfalls, rivers and forests. Although hunting and fishing are far to popular to make it my place. I can't really escape meat here either! I do love being with Jon and Steph though - they're such wonderful people. Intelligent, funny, gentle and very easy to be around. ... read more

Today I walked across a frozen, snow-dusted river. The St Croix River, here near Bayport where our lovely friends Jon and Steph Reid live just a while away from the Twin Cities. It's a wide, wide river. Scratching back inches of snow, we found the ice - almost black seeming with the cold water underneath. I would have thought I'd feel fear, but I didn't. I guess that is a good metaphor for my whole journey here - anticpating terror, but feeling so many other things instead. Joy, beauty, aloneness and some sadness. I can't tell you how much I find myself constantly amazed on this trip. Just when I think my experience cannot be expanded any further, something pushes me beyond the boundaries of what I know or expect. I guess that's wonder - a ... read more

Welcome back to our travel blog! Our anticipation is growing as we look forward to going to Guatemala. This past week we experienced what felt like our first introduction to Minnesota winter in the three years we have lived here. Two snow storms in one week dumped just over 20 inches of snow in the Twin Cities metro. There is something beautiful about going outside in the afternoon and having to shield your eyes because of how bright it is. To pass the time this last week Sarah and I took in a few movies (either from Redbox at $1 a pop or from our local dollar theater). That’s the way to go. We really enjoyed Freedom Writers. And we enjoyed the soundtrack every bit as much as the movie. As we were leaving the ... read more

I'm already nervous about the hair growth. I can feel it laying on the top of my ears. We thought you might enjoy checking out the language school we plan on attending. It is an independent language school in Quetzaltenango called Celas Maya. During our time there we will have one-on-one instruction with native speakers and live with a Guatemalan family. Check it out at: http://www.celasmaya.edu.gt/ Wow, thinking about leaving is pretty tough these days, especially since we have so enjoyed the sub-zero temperatures here in Minnesota the last few weeks. Our computer tells us that currently it is -1 degree with a windchill that makes it feel like -87,000. All joking aside, we will miss Minnesota. We have made some great friends and experienced a lot of wonderful things in the last few years. Signing ... read more

Hello New and Old Friends! This is Sarah writing our first blog, and I'm here to tell you what it is that we are up to! As many of you know, Drew and I been living in Minnesota for almost 3 years now. Drew has been working at Crown College in the music department as a professor, and I have been a self-employed artist. Our time in this great state of subzero temperatures is growing short, as we have decided to move to Guatemala, land of no snow! Here's the story: Even as we were first dating, Drew and I talked about how both of us would love to live in another country at some point in our lives. One of Drew's life goals has been to be fluent in Spanish, and that is what we ... read more

Am in St. Paul, MN. Last night, I went to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. That was amazing! Talk about a rock opera. There's just no other way to describe it. They never took a break and it ended up being a 3 hour show. Such incredible voices, deep, rich voices by those who sung. And then there was the music. Amazing musicians of electric guitar, piano, organ, violin, all combined for this loud, upbeat show coupled with an amazing light show. Can't say enough about it. It was their last show for this tour and I don't believe they start touring again until early winter 2007. Wasn't able to take pictures so have nothing to upload right now. I will definitely be back to see them again next year. Yesterday morning, I left Fargo, ND and ... read more
