We left Provincetown to travel to Falmouth and another glorious sunny day. En route we decided to stop in Chatham, again on a peninsula - Chris likes places on peninsulas - go figure. Anyway the beach was stunning, albeit far too dangerous for swimming. You could feel the ferocity of mother nature, as the wind was very strong even on a beautiful day and the sea currents looked treacherous. The lovely houses perched precariously on the cliff edge looked desirable, until you heard one of the locals telling how the present day landscape was created only a couple of years ago compliments of a ferocious storm which left two cliff top houses at the bottom of the sea - maybe we won’t be rushing out to buy the uninterrupted sea view after all! Typically the day we left Boston for our drive down to Cape Cod was the best weather yet. We decided to drive through Weymouth MA - because when you come from the old Weymouth you should compare it to the new Weymouth. It was very picturesque, however we never managed to find the town centre - maybe it doesn’t have one. The Town Hall puts ours to shame though. The Cape is certainly much bigger than you initially think, and with beaches either side, a zigzag route proves confusing but picturesque. Discovering the limits on the roads is interesting and less than a week into the trip and Chris is already in trouble with the law. Maybe seeing a man coming towards you with his hand on his weapon was a sign of things to come. ... read more

Provincetown is located at the tip on Cape Cod. It is a charming little town that is extremely gay friendly - the first thing you will notice upon disembarking the Boston ferry and walking up the dock onto Commercial St. is all the rainbow flags. You will probably also notice before you even get off the ferry that there's an awful lot of gay people who love going to P-Town. But there are also a lot of antique stores and whatnot that cater to the old lady crowd, and there's lots of vacationing families too. We stayed at the Provincetown Inn, located at the very end of Commercial St. on the west side, about a 20 minute walk from the center of town. Although I loved how our motel was located in a quiet spot on ... read more

Today we had Nautical Science Olympics! They were really fun, we competed with our watches and in total my watch won! Our categories were boxing the compass, putting up a main sail and taking it down, putting on our emergency suits, knot tying, charting, and trying to keep a tin foil boat to stay afloat and hold the most weight. For each competition your watch does one of the activities while other watches do other activities. Each watch does it, then the best person from our team does each of the activitites in the final round. We won in boxing the compass, or saying the 32 points of the compass, memorized as fast as you can. We also won in knot tying, lost by 5 seconds in putting up the sail, won emergency suits, tied in ... read more

Again this summer my friend Sandy opened her Cape house in Harwichport to Karen and I for a week. It’s in a great location near the center of town and a few steps from the beach. Being July on Cape Cod everywhere you look blue hydrangeas are lush and in bloom. We might not like the rain much but plants are loving all the rain. As with most of the lost summer of 2009 we had one good day out of five. Wednesday was a beautiful beach day, we walked the few hundred feet from the house to the beach and got some rare sun and into our summer reads. My brother John stopped by and the two of us drove over to the A&W on route 28 in his MGB for the weekly Cruise Night. ... read more

Everyone slept wonderfully last night and we all awoke this morning to a cloudy and brisk Rhode Island day. I was very shocked to see that the outdoor thermometer read 59 degrees. No wonder Jon said his toes were about to freeze off ! This was definitely an oatmeal morning so, as soon as we were all finished getting ready (without incident I might add), Tim and I sat at the kitchen table and enjoyed our oatmeal while Jon decided he would stick with a bowl of Cheerios. Our first adventure today would take us up the road to Newport, Rhode Island. A few of our friends had told us to stop by there and check it out plus there were a couple of things in the book that I just had to get marked off ... read more

TRAVELOGUE Wednesday, May 13, 2009 At Sea (Somewhere East of Cape Cod) Good morning everyone~ Tuesday evening - continued - Before we left Newport, Rhode Island last night at 11:00 p.m. and before we were off to dinner, we were treated to a beautiful sunset in Newport Harbor and a sailboat regatta, with probably a dozen or more sailboats turning and displaying their bright and colorful spinnaker sails in the light winds as they made their turns and headed back to their marinas. Rose Island Light Lighthouse was on one side with the massive expansion bridge in the background, and as the tide lowered, the water around the lighthouse became like thin glass and just glistened as if it were a mirror with the pinks and oranges of the sunset. Dinner was enjoyable, as usual, and ... read more

Oh, my goodness. What a day! We started the day by filling out our Absentee Ballots and getting them in the mail. Then we headed out for Cape Cod. It's a windy day, so we're glad we didn't have the camper along. When we got there, our first stop was the Welcome Center. We said that we only had one day to see Cape Cod and what were the highlights that we shouldn't miss. We got a list. Then we asked where the best place for clam chowder was. A place was recommended that won the Best Clam Chowder in Cape Cod and the Boston area for four straight years. We're there! Cape Cod wasn't exactly what we expected. First of all, Cape Cod is bigger than we thought. It starts farther down the coast than ... read more

Since Cape Cod for me consists of biking, swimming, and a ton of laundry, I won't keep too many entries but I will leave behind a few thoughts. No matter which party you belong too, it felt pretty historic to see everyone glued to their tvs on the plane watching Obama. Fact: Obama's speeches are comforting during high turbulence. While going through security, I heard a six-year old kid say to his mother "I liked it before when we didn't have to take our shoes off at the airport." But I did arrive safely in Boston and headed for the Cape for some smoothed out times and lots of R and R. ... read more

We had a very busy day on saturday. It was the first day that we awoke to a cloudy day but we made the most of it and had a great day. First we had a short drive to Hyannis to board a boat to go whale watching. It was a pretty big boat and it took us about an hour to get to the whale watching area. There is no point me telling you about it- just look at the photos and videos- it was amazing!!!!!!! Later that evening we drove to Foxborough to watch David Beckham and the LA Galaxy take on the New England Revolution. The score ended 2-2 in a very exciting match- photos to follow.... read more
