Published: May 14th 2007North America » United States » Maine » PortlandWell I thought I would get thig back up and running with all of the traveling I am going to be doing for work. I still have to figure out a way to get some photos up on here, well since I don't have a camera that might be a little problem. Anyway, I was at a wedding yesterday. Susan's sister (Anne, who I went to college with) got married to a very nice guy and Susan invited me to the wedding. It was fun, I have to admit I was a little stressed out with seeing people from high school, but I think I did pretty good. No worries! At the moment I am on my way up to the northern section of Maine for a college fair, my bosses were right in suggesting I ... read more
Oh Margie you came and you found me a turkey!
Published: December 15th 2006North America » United States » Maine » PortlandIf you haven't seen that episode of the simpsons that title will probably make nooooooooo sense. Anyhoo, onto my thanksgiving break! At UVM we get a week off over thanksgiving, which is cool. For most of the break I went to a place just outside of Portland (the capital of Maine) callled Yarmouth. I travelled to Maine by Greyhound bus, because there is a terminal in Burlington which makes it really easy. Though driving straight to Yarmouth from Burlington should take about 4 hours, my bus ride took 8. This, I discovered, was because the bus went down to Boston before travelling up to Maine. But I didn't mind the time because there was cool stuff to look at outside the window. And I had a two seats to myself, so double the coolness. When the ... read more
Maine: Bar Harbor, Portland, Kennebunkport
Published: October 16th 2006North America » United States » Maine » PortlandAfter an uneventful crossing of the border from Canada to the US we made our way to Bar Harbor, Maine. Bar Harbor is a quaint town with plenty of little shops and restaurants. We didn't stay as long as we should have so there isn't that much to describe. However, the next day we went to Acadia national park and spent some time there. We woke up to a typical fall Maine day, drizzling rain and plentiful fog. As we clibed the road in the park, the visibility became so bad that we weren't able to enjoy fully what the park has to offer. In particular the fall foliage that already was wonderful in foggy conditions, would have been breathtaking on a sunny day. We saw several waterfalls and sweeping views of the ocean. Today is August 15th and I officially have two weeks until I leave for Beijing, China. I'm still working for one more week, and today a group of my favorite co workers surprised me with a going away potluck lunch. They got me good too, I really had no idea. They also gave me a great picture of all 13 of us at our summer outing. I'm definitely going to bring it to China with me. In the next couple of weeks I am going to tie up all my loose ends and pack up all my things. This is the hard part, the saying goodbye. I hate saying goodbye. I am looking forward to the year to come, meeting my students, working with the teachers, finding a great tutor, exploring Beijing, learning more Chinese...all of ... read more

I had promised my dad a SeaDogs (Red Sox AA Baseball team in Portland, ME) for Fathers Day and although it was late, we were finally able to round up the whole family on the same night. There were 6 of us - mom & Dad, Ian and I, my sister Casey and her boyfriend Jon. Ian and I were to meet the four of them at Hadlock Field in front of the gates. We arrived first, which is highly unusual. We parked at our usual location - at a Chinese Restaurant down the street, where they charge $5 and it's only a short walk (the designated lots fill up so fast, local businesses charge for their lots and it's no more expensive and often easier to get out at the end of the night.) Our ... read more
Riding the dog ... 2,000 miles on the greyhound!
Published: May 30th 2006North America » United States » Maine » PortlandWe battled through the snowstorm in Maine while driving to a social function. In the car my sister, her husband and I were frantically trying to stay warm before making a dash through the driving snow and into the venue. We awoke the next morning to find the whole neighbourhood blanketed in nine inches of perfect snow, providing a beautiful backdrop with an outside air temperature of minus 17 degrees celsius. Wait a minute ... was this some kind of vivid dream? I'm from Australia and I've never experienced anything like this before! But that's one of the joys of travelling and has become my new life for a time, as I visit family in the gorgeous Maine suburb of South Berwick during a northern hemisphere winter. Playing uncle to the two kids and raving on ... read more
