We pulled out at 9:30 into a cool, cloudy morning. It was 62 degrees. Yay! It would be delightful if we get this when we get home...at least long enough to unload Mufasa! We drove through Cedar Rapids, Iowa and were amazed at the amount of industries there. We had seen a sign when we entered Iowa yesterday stating that they loved both their silos and their smoke stacks. I guess areas like this is what they meant. Our first stop was at an Iowa Rest Area to hop on WiFi to post yesterday’s blog post. It was quick, quick! LOVE good WiFi. A “chore” we had on our list was to mail a birthday card to one of my cousins. We plugged Post Office into the GPS and it sent us off at the exit ... read more

The drive from Alton RV Park in Columbus OH to Clark's Ferry Recreation Area in Montpelier IA (from where the journey to Alaska would begin) was too far for Uncle Larry, so I decided to make a stop at Kamp Komfort RV Park in Bloomington IL to visit one family member and a childhood neighbor. I departed Columbus on Wednesday, June 26, 2018 and took I-70 to Indianapolis IN, connected with I-74 through Champaign IL and on to Bloomington. The trip was long by Uncle Larry’s standards but was uneventful. Unfortunately, I had learned a few weeks before my visit that my nephew, the women’s gymnastics coach at Illinois State University in Bloomington, would be out of state during my visit. That was not a problem as I had last-minute details to address before heading out ... read more

Today we got past Chicago and crossed the Mississippi River into Iowa. We are camped in a nicely kept county park near Davenport. We didn't have any reservations and since this is a Friday afternoon we stopped a little early to make sure we could get a spot. We took the Honda down to a park along the Mississippi River. There was a number of people fishing from the bank and some type of kayaking event just getting underway by a women's outdoors club. I included a few pictures. Now that we are west of the Mississippi I think the countryside will start to get more interesting. In the meantime I'm just glad to be camping and exploring new places. Our friends John and Linda, who were planning to make this trip with us, had to ... read more

Well it is time for the next installment of our vacation adventures. We are travelling with our family to Paris, London, and Wales over the next two weeks - and are looking forward to the sight seeing and the adventures we always have travelling. Our first stop is Paris where we will spend 3 days. From there we will take the "Chunnel" to London and sight see there for 3 days. At the end of the first week, we go to Wales and pick up a canal boat and will spend the second week touring the canals in Wales. We are in Chicago, waiting for our plane to Philedelphia. Connie has already located the child she most wants to sit beside. The other good news is that both flights are totally full! So far, so good ... read more

As it was while travelling from Rockton IL to Dubuque IA, my drive from Mud Lake Park in Dubuque to Clarks Ferry Campground near Davenport IA was in the raindrops – not heavy rain, but heavy enough to use the intermittent mode on my windshield wipers for most of the drive. Clarks Ferry is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility located on the western bank of the Mississippi River and was the site of a ferry that operated between the Iowa and Illinois shores in the early 1800's. The facility is actually located in Montpelier IA, about 6-8 miles south of Davenport. Jumping ahead a bit, the weather I had during my two-week stay was pleasant for the most part, but the weather in the northern Great Plains, particularly before but also during this period, ... read more

Geo: 41.5383, -90.5764Today, we are two days from home. We've traveled from Sioux Falls to Davenport. We had planned to stop at the Iowa State Fair but the weather was crappy so I researched things to do in Omaha and found the zoo. Now, normally we don't do zoos unless they are unique. This one seemed unique and didn't disappoint. They have a Desert Dome indoor with a desert exhibit and a nocturnal animals cave and swamp exhibit below the desert. Super cool. We ate at the cafe which overlooked their rainforest exhibit. It took us an hour and a half to go through the first exhibit. After lunch we went through the indoor rainforest exhibit which was amazing. It took us about 45 minutes to do the upper level of the rainforest but Matthew wasn't ... read more

Geo: 41.5236, -90.5776Corn, corn and more corn. And that is the word for the day. We left Troy, MI at 8:25 and a very chilly 57 degrees. But we dressed for warm weather, and we gambled correctly, because when we arrived in Iowa, it was a comfortable 77. Getting out of the Detroit area during rush hour was a bit of a challenge, but we didn't lose too much time. It had to be expected, given the time of day. I found the road very interesting. There were tall concrete walls, yellowed with age, on both sides of the road, and it was like being in a tunnel, but we could still see the blue sky above us. And that is all that we could see for quite a few miles. Steve told me that the ... read more

Well today started the first day of "super slab" travel. We had to get to Davenport. There is a real nice Days Inn I recommend with a restaurant called the Iowa Machine Shed. Ecco Domani was 6 oz for $4. Food excellent and plenty of it! Borrowed my music ear phones from Ralf and listened to music on way to Davenport. The music does make me not as vigilant mentally of my surroundings. I didn't do anything as crazy as stand on the pegs and dance, but I did find myself wanting to go very, very fast depending on the song. If Iget home with no wrecks, no tickets and my hearing it will be a miracle.. Road tip: Stay away from mini vans with I Love Gospel Music bumper sticker and 11 kids jumping around ... read more

A quick jaunt down to Springfield, IL to the Lincoln Library and Museum, which is quite a production. 2009 is the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth and the museum has been spruced up to celebrate. They have done a wonderful job, using the newest technologies, to truly bring to life this monumental man. My guess is that Disney and Lucasfilm had a hand in some of the exhibits and productions. There was a wonderful short film about the library that used 3D holograms fabulously - I was sure the fellow was real in the beginning. In some ways this museum, while very well done, didn't seem to be as fascinating...perhaps because we felt we already knew so much about him. We then took a wonderful tour of Lincoln's home in Springfield, the only home he every owned. ... read more
