Thursday 25th September (Day 31) Boston - Davenport We woke up fairly early in the morning and ventured down to the breakfast room. Our first experience here had been a bit creepy (the host of the place was really formal, and we sat around a large table with some other older guests, just kind of looking at each other, while music similar to the Munster’s theme song was playing in the background - we ended up with the giggles). This breakfast was much more successful and we met an interesting young couple from Louisiana. The guy was clearly an ex-college jock of some variety, and I was pleased that he completely slammed the stereotype that sportsmen are all meatheads (and shallow). Both of them seemed like really nice people, and were also quite interested in hearing ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left Madison in the morning, and turned southwest. We had originally been intending to drive pretty much just south, and perhaps a bit east, to see more of Tennessee and Kentucky, before turning west. The change of heart resulted from a decision to get to Seattle by the end of the month. Knowing that that only leaves us a few weeks, we figured we had to at least be moving in a more direct path, which will allow us to spend some time in the middle of the country. There's a lot of pretty terrain between Madison and Dubuque, Iowa, but unfortunately we chose to leave on a very foggy day, so mostly it was all enshrouded and difficult to see. There were also some potentially interesting stops in the area, but we ... read more

Day 10 We woke up fairly early after our late night in time to meet up with Kelly, Robbie & the boys for breakfast, at a place called the Village Inn just a minute down the road (not unlike Denny’s as a vague similarity). There were so many nice dishes to choose from, & Vaughan had particular trouble deciding on his order. After messing around there for a while & drinking loads of coffee, we headed for the Mall, which was also near where we were staying. It was a fairly big mall (the size of some of our bigger ones), with many stores I had forgotten about since I was last in the USA. I ended up trailing behind everyone else in Sears & then didn’t know where the others had gone - I ... read more

Since I have had to postpone the culinary and cultural delights awaiting me in SE Asia, I have been scurrying around to devise a contingency plan. Pleased to announce that I bought the ticket, and it lands me back in previously trod Central America. However, this time I will get to add Panama's splendors to the itinerary and will not be as much of a whirlwind traveler (last time was 5 countries in 4 weeks). Three weeks from tomorrow I fly out to Costa Rica, where I will hopefully meet some cool travelers to usher in the New Year with (or find a place to salsa with the Ticos!) From there I plan on visiting Panama's Bocas del Toro and the Chiriqui highlands before heading back to western Costa Rica to (hopefully!) learn how to surf ... read more

Tip: if you want to feel 10 pounds lighter instantly, quit your job. The feeling of napping in the middle of the day, of NOT checking voicemail and calling all my stores 4 times a day, of not dreading hearing my phone ring for fear of my hovering boss ... these are all PRICELESS. I feel like I just got my life back, and oh, how beautiful life seems when I own it instead of a corporation! Despite the fact that all my travel plans have just run amok, that I am now unemployed and without a car, and the fact that winter has arrived and the snow is falling, I am able to finally breathe again and actually appreciate the beauty of the snowflakes falling so peacefully and decorating all the barren trees with icing. ... read more
