Since we’re now on the final leg of our trip, I can muse on the road part of this road trip. At one point, Tom said, “This would be a great trip except for the roads.” Sometimes they were good, sometimes terrible, sometimes they didn’t exist at all. Sometimes drivers were good, sometimes terrible, and – sometimes – we were all alone, which was lovely. We had plenty of time to talk as we drove, and grouped the challenges of this road trip into groups: · Road conditions: once you get off the US interstate highways, you’re on two-lane roads. The trans-Canada highway is not a limited access highway. Chip-and-tar surfaces are common, as is a type of dirt and gravel that dries into concrete in your wheelwells. Road construction is crammed into the few warm ... read more

The big day has finally arrived. We got going this morning right after Kate got her final dose of rabies vaccine (she accidentally stepped on a bat!). We traveled about 335 miles to Elkhart, IN, which bills itself as the RV capital and is in fact the home of several RV manufacturers. We got here in time to tour the RV Museum and Hall of Fame, and they invited us to spend the night in their parking lot. So we will. We basically took I-90 to where it merged with I-80 near Cleveland and we will be driving on I-80 for the next four days! I don't usually like to travel the interstates so much but we wanted to put the miles behind us on the way out west. ... read more

Day 27 - Grand Island to Elkhart We were awoken by the lovely sounds of a storm this morning. It was a good thing we didn't have plans for the morning. We slept in and relaxed while we waited to hear news of the car repairs. We did a bit of trailer maintenance and stayed out of the morning storm. By 11:30 we got the news that the car was ready to go and the super helpful Manager of the Auto Parts store gave Tony a ride to pick up the car. By 1PM we were once again on the road and headed towards Elkhart IL. On the way we stopped at a massive service center that spanned the whole Interstate. There were gas stations on both the eastbound and westbound sides of the freeway and ... read more

We finished our last few days in Iowa doing so many things with Patty and Jeff. We visited the Iowa Motor speedway and even got to see the NASCAR car hauler parade. The next day we spent watching Patty do her thing in the kitchen. We traveled a long way to have her lasagna. There are even two trays in our freezer. Yummy. Thanks Patty and Jeff for a great time. We left Iowa heading to Chicago for what was supposed to be 7 days literally on a Lake Michigan beach. The first day we were there we had a major electrical issue that almost caused a fire. After the repair place said they could not fix it, they recommended we drive the 170 miles to Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart is where the manufacturer is located. So ... read more

Our last few days we spent touring a train museum and an RV/Motorhome museum. We found it right up our alley, viewing motorhomes and RV’s from the past, the oldest being 1913! What was amazing was the workmanship - beautiful wood and cabinetry. Some even had a "water closet". Cool!... read more

Our next stop was with previous China friends who are now working stateside with an incredible project in Asia called Starfish. (check it out and buy up all their clearance sale stuff at: www.starfish-project.com ) It was neat to see first-hand what our friends are doing and even help them for a few hours along with their weekly volunteers. These are the same friends that housed the van we're using and hosted R overnight when he first arrived in country. Since he started driving from here, he has since driven an entire loop across the USA!! The kids have been looking forward to seeing these friends, in fact, our daughter has asked throughout the trip how many days until we see these friends, so we've been counting days since from about “30!” The kids had a ... read more

Greetings from Amish Country! We arrived here on Sunday after stopping at another DDD's in Rockland, MI. Rosie's Diner was the place and let me tell you that it was nothing special. It was kind of dirty and the food was mediocre at best. We even ate something that Guy had on the show and it was still only mediocre. Guess sometimes we just can't agree with the Master. We are staying at Eby's Campground in Bristol, IN which is just outside of Elkhart. It is very wooded and secluded and when we arrived Sunday it was packed but they all left that evening and it has been quiet since. Yesterday we went to the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart and that was very anticlimactic. They do have a lot of old RV's, tents, and ... read more

Today was less eventful then the others. I got my oil changed at Firestone in downtown Milwaukee while Jerome was at his audition. I ate lunch and then went to Veteran's Park downtown. Jerome did not do as well as he had anticipated on his audition, so we went ahead and left for our next part of the journey. We headed back south and stopped at the Mars Cheese Castle by the side of the highway before we left Wisconsin. I had several excellent cheese samples and enjoyed looking at all the products this place had to offer. It was really neat. We had to sit through two hours of highway traffic going back through Chicago. From there, we went on into Indiana and stopped at Elkhart for the night. Tomorrow I plan to visit Cuyahoga ... read more

Drove from home to Elkhart Indiana today 560 miles. Supposted to have been 8 hours, instead was 10. Made numerous fuel stops, wer're getting about 8-10 mpg. Trailer pulled like a dream, truck struggled a bit, maybe just a bit underpowerd, especially in mountains. Oh well, too late to worry now. Going through mountains in PA were slow, roads in PA are terrible. Once we got over the mountains in Ohio, smooth sailing. Driving along the highway in mid-west looks like driving down RT. 50 near Easton... Flat corn and bean fields. That's about it. ... read more

Day 1 of our great American adventure was a success. Unfortunately Dad's VW was unable to make the trip with us due to some electrical problems so we have my Mom's Ford instead. So now we can't drive to Montana on vegetable oil, which is slightly disappointing but I'm just happy to be going regardless of the car I'm in. We made it without incident to Goshen, Indiana, approximately 650 miles from home. We left this morning around 9 and got to our motel here a little before 9 this evening. It was nice to see that since we haven't changed time zones yet, it was bright and sunny outside until about 9:30 tonight. Not really anything exciting to report upon. Dad and I alternated the driving so it wasn't bad at all. I didn't take ... read more
