the 8 of us have been informed this morning that there will be no trip. all of us (the travelers),wanted to go, but the school says no. jon, our teacher, i know, feels terrible. this is a great loss for Peredinya university and all the professors who had the next three weeks scheduled for us. i know the school has our best interests at heart, but i can't help but be sad. yesterday i finally finished all my shopping. seeing as how i have everything i need, i.e. travelers checks, packed luggage, loose fitting clothing, already put together, and a travelblog account set up i feel as though i should go somewhere else. hmmmmm???? any suggestions? any one who is up for a little adventure?... read more

Any of you who know me really well know that it is TOTALLY unlike me to be waiting to the last minute to pack my bag because I NEVER procrastinate anything, so I'm sure it is a total shock to you that I have yet to organize my luggage for tomorrow. (At least I have somewhat of an excuse since I caught a stomach bug from my sister and brother-in-law and was out of commission a couple days.)My best pal Pam has graciously agreed to get up at the crack of dawn to drop me at the airport and I have yet to figure out if I can reserve a room for tomorrow night....I guess I don't have an 8 hour layover in Dallas for nothing! Not much else to report but that my next news ... read more

14th December Checked into HIChicago along with a zillion school kids. Feeling half dead from Jetlag I could do no more than shower and sleep. 15th Sears Tower I'd been walking around in the loop not being able to work out which the Sears tower was, so figured I best go up. From the sky you know your way higher than surrounding buildings. I hadnt appricated just how big Chicago is, flying in over the lake had been amazing, the sun was setting it was just beautiful, whilst the expanse of water was just huge I didnt get a handle on what size the city would be. From the sky the buildings seemingly go on forever. 16th John Hancock Tower After going to the Aquarium(see later entry) I decided to give tall buildings another go. The ... read more

I am leaving for Sri Lanka in eight weeks. I went to get my new passport today and have spent most of the morning explaining to my Mom how completely safe this trip will be, but of course I tell her that about every hare-brained idea I have. I can't wait to leave.... read more

This is it - the last night in the USA before taking off for our adventure in Europe. Back in Ames, Iowa, I was waking up around 10 this morning at someone’s rack at the house, since I didn’t have any room anymore - somewhat still drunk from the night before after watching the Minnesotan Wild hockey game with our rushee Dan Orr and a bunch of guys. I bought a sketch book and sold back two architecture textbooks at the UBS when I saw my buddy Jim. He wished me a good luck in Rome. I also saw Gilk back at the house, and we were talking for a bit - hope to see you later in Europe? Jakey pants' advise not to spend too much time at Amsterdam and always wrap it - yeah, ... read more

Part of the Savanna Studio Fall 2001. We visited several cities in Illinois, including Galena (a neat small town by the Iowan/Wisconsin border), Chicago (of course the biggest city in Illinois), and Peoria. We managed to do a small detour to Indiana, to Indiana Dunes which is located by the Lake Michigan shore. ... read more

Our holiday was coming to an end - only another three days and we would be back on the plane heading home for home and work .We were not looking forward to our flight which was set for 6.30 in the evening. I dont like flying at night and although you can go to sleep I dreaded the long night with no view from the windows. We hoped to enjoy our last few days and travelled via Galena a small town in Illinois to Chicago where we intended spending a few days sightseeing again and having a last few days with our relatives.. Galena is known for its history and its association with the war general Ulysses S Grant. Once one of the most important cities in the state, Galena was the hub on the Mississippi ... read more

We left Springfield in bright sunshine and headed for Witt a tiny village/hamlet/settlement near to Nokomis and Litchfield. We had yet another date with family who ran a farm in the area. Yet another example of the better life our family found when they paid their third class steerage and sailed to New York from Liverpool. Witt was most definately off the beaten track - population 1200 or thereabouts. It must have been bustling in the early part of the 20th century with local mines employing the menfolk of the town however times had moved on and it now felt and looked like a ghost town. Tumbleweed being blown down the street making it look like a film set for a spaghetti western. There was a cafe on one side of the only street and a ... read more

Waking up in America is very different to waking up in Europe. It is so much busier - the cities never sleep. Breakfast American style comprises of enough food to feed the five thousand and have some left over. Chicago like many American cities is a city of two halves - the affluent part with the Magnificent Mile with its high class shops to the ghettoes on the outskirts. Most buildings are new - built after the great fire. A mixture of style ranging from Gothic to Art Deco. It is definately the Windy City with a nippy wind being pulled in from Lake Michigan which felt and looked more like an inland sea. We walked Navy Pier admiring the restaurant boats moored on the harbour side and wished we had more time to go on ... read more
