Aloha for the last time from Hawaii….all good things must come to an end I suppose!!! It’s Sunday here and it was a cooler, cloudy day…a day when again we didn’t do a lot really. Joy was ‘desperate’ to get some of the skin care product that she likes to use but it is very expensive to buy at home and she ‘missed’ it on our first trip to the Waikele Outlet Centre, even though she purchased a heap of other ‘stuff’ of the same brand at really good prices. So around 10.30am after a rather lazy start to the day (well it is Sunday after all) we headed out to the Outlet Centre again and managed, this time, to get the correct product at a 2 for 1 price (under half what she pays at ... read more

Aloha again from Oahu, Hawaii. Not a lot to report today…been a drive around looking at shops day, as I said in yesterday’s blog. Have to admit that doing that in the car around the middle of Honolulu isn’t my favourite pastime…too much traffic on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and not enough knowledge of where to get into centre’s car parks etc. just makes for a tiring day. However, undeterred, we set off around 9.45am for the big Ala Moana shopping centre, only a few miles away but in traffic of course….. Joy was on a mission to get some ‘stuff’ from the Body Shop…..their body butter is always so expensive at home but Joy really likes it. After missing the car park entrance the first time, we got a park after circling the ... read more

Aloha everyone again. Really not much to report today and I’m serious about that!! We decided to try to find the Bay on the North Shore that we had visited on a guided photo tour in 2014 where turtles were swimming close to the shore and where you could take photos really easily of them. We missed the correct spot on our circle island drive the other day and Joy really wanted to try to find the right spot. But first we had to finish up a bit of ‘present’ shopping and apparently Walmart was the place to do that this time. So we googled Walmarts and found one near the Ala Moana mall so loaded the address into Tom and headed off. My favourite activity, of course, driving around the centre of Honolulu looking for ... read more

Aloha again from us. Well it was a lazy day of sorts today……a day at the beach…..well Hanauma Bay to be exact. We have been to H Bay before but it was 25 years ago when we were in Hawaii on our 25th wedding anniversary. I first visited in 1993 when Rhys and I were here with the Hawkes Bay Youth Brass Band at the Pacific Basin Music Festival…hard to believe that it is 30 years ago. We tried to visit in 2014 when we were here but couldn’t get in as the car park was full when we arrived at about 9am. They have changed all the visiting rules now and you have to book tickets to enter the ‘park’ and I think I said something about it in my Blog a couple of days ... read more

Aloha for the next edition from us. Firstly we have seen photos and heard reports of the diabolical weather many of you are getting in NZ at the moment from Tropical Cyclone Hale. Trust that it isn’t going to be too ongoing but take care out there. Have to report that we are not having anything but bright blue sunny days over here….not too hot but just right for us……so we picked the right time to be on holiday and away from home again. Today was a sightseeing day…all day. Decided to do the ‘circle Island’ drive and take in the wonderful variations of countryside and scenery that Oahu has to offer. Will include a few photos to show you some of them. Started by heading out towards the East and Haunama Bay area where we ... read more

Aloha to everyone, We are sitting at the airport on Maui, Kahului, having a cold drink while we wait to head to our gate for boarding our flight to Honolulu. We got here a bit early as it didn’t take us nearly as long to get thought he rental car check-in as I envisaged. However by the time pointed out all the cars ‘issues’ to the very nice young man at the Dollar Rentals check-in we did take a while….the bonnet kept jumping open to the first catch, the key fob ‘door opening’ didn’t work at all - locked everything but wouldn’t open and it took me 3 days when I quite by accident discovered that if I used the key to open the drivers door and turned the key twice to the right it activated ... read more

Aloha again for Blog No. 5 and our (sort of) second day on Oahu. After yesterday’s incredible frustrations, today was a much better and more enjoyable day for a few reasons. The day dawned warm and sunny (sorry to all those being ravished by Cyclone Hale – we actually saw some photos on Joy’s Facebook taken of the camp where we have our bach at Porangahau Beach and it was extensively under water…..not our buildings, I hope, but the grounds…for those who know where we are, the causeway going out to our place within the grounds was about 30 cms under water.). We started the day on the computer at 7am on the dot booking tickets to go snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, a very famous snorkeling and diving area on the east of the Island, so ... read more

Aloha everyone, Well, a couple of days to catch up on from 2 rather weary travelers. Just too tired last night by the time we got back to the hotel from our wedding anniversary ‘Sunset Dinner Cruise’ at Ma’alaea to get onto the computer so here goes…. Yesterday was our wedding anniversary over here, being a day behind (I think that’s the way it works) and we celebrated by the 2 waterborne activities that I mentioned on the previous blog. We headed out to Ma’alaea Harbour, about 25 minutes drive away from the Maui Banyan around 10am giving us plenty of time before our 1100am check-in for the whale watching cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Joy wanted to buy tickets for the Maui Aquarium and Ocean Centre for Saturday that is beside where we had ... read more

Hi to family and friends on our Travel Blog email list. As many of you already know we have embarked on a trip to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary…January 6th..to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. We came here in 1998 for our 25th anniversary so decided to , ‘sort of’, retrace our steps. We left home on Monday morning NZ time heading by car to Auckland. Joy drove the Trax while I ventured forth in Christine’s little yellow Holden Cruze that has been with us since she went back to Germany about 5 years ago. Christine and her partner Marcus are coming back for 6 weeks and arrive the day after we left for Hawaii…we repositioned the car for them to use on their ‘tiki tour’. Caught up with family in Auckland on Tuesday and ... read more

Aloha to everyone again…. Thursday the 5th here so even though it’s our wedding anniversary today in NZ, we have to wait until tomorrow for the 6th January here, and we’ve got a great day and evening lined up to help us celebrate, but more on that later. This morning after our usual brekkie we headed out in the car for a day of driving and sightseeing. We headed up to the north from where we are and went straight on past Lahaina and carried on up the coast looking for some interesting spots that Joy had found on a map. The road started out as a usual 2 lane road but quickly turned into a very long, winding and narrow, mainly 1 way, scenic drive. No real towns in this part of the Island until ... read more
