Days 25-28 Waikiki shores Tuesday was a long day at the beach. Nice swim and snorkel and throwing the gridiron ball with Josh, Tom and Ben. We all copped a bit of sun, so the afternoon was a little slow indoors l, while Kym had a pedicure. In the evening we had chines take away in the condo with another great view of the sunset. Wednesday we hired a car and went for a drive around the island. Susie drove brilliantly and ben’s navigation was accurate (and informative). We had a nice walk along sunset beach and then a great swim at the famous Waimea bay where the waves were powerful but fun to contend with. Every so often we hit the sand fairly hard. Ben josh Tim and Zoe swam with a turtle just beyond ... read more

Day 6 We were up early (for us) to check out and get to a tour of the local brewery where we had gone out to dinner a few nights before. Seeing how they make the beer followed by a tasting of a flight of 4 of their brews, including the banana beer Kym had the other day.. breakfast beer!! Leaving Kona behind we set on our roadtrip. It was not even 2 and a half hours to where we were staying and we made a couple of stops to check out the scenery along the way. Hawai'i has such vast changing landscapes within a 20 minute drive. We saw coastal towns, black lava rocks making up lots of the landscape to looking up at lava mountains followed by lush green fields and rainforests. One of ... read more

Monday October 14th, 2014 began very early. We're talking 2:30am early (or maybe it's better to look at that as late with a longish nap beforehand, who knows). I set my alarm because we were going to drive up the dormant Volcano of Haleakala for the sunrise, which many people have told me is a spiritual experience. We groggily had coffee and threw clothes on and headed for the van. We (Andrew, Lori, Jeremy, Rachel and I) took warm clothes, as we were told it is cold at the top, since the summit is at 10023 feet elevation (interesting to note that the elevation from the sea floor is 17000 feet, taller than Mount Everest). We set the gps and headed south to get on the crater road for the long climb. It was a twisty ... read more

It’s important to remember that the Volcano National Park and Volcano Village area are around 4500-5000 feet above sea-level and often COLD!!!! One time, we stayed in a cabin there (which had no heat…or walls…well, there were walls, but they didn’t quite reach the roof (the cabin was still a work in progress)…and the roof had a hole in it for the tree to grow through…loved the cabin! BUT it was COLD! It was so cold, I actually wore all the clothes I had in my suitcase, all at once, to bed. It didn’t snow, but it could have. So, bring a sweater. And, a raincoat. (The first time we were there, the rain was so cold a... read more

Geo: 19.4308, -155.238So today was a mishmash of various things which took me north, south and west of Hilo. First stop was the Homelani Memorial Park to track down the headstone of some distant relative on my dad's side. The ladies in the office were very helpful and one walked me over to the section and helped me find him. Apparently he was located in the prominent people section so he must have had something to do with the settling of Hilo or something like that. So, dead people taken care of, it was time to do some sightseeing. First stop was Rainbow Falls State Park. The park is located a little farther inland from the cemetery and has no entrance fee. All the park consists of is an overlook platform for the falls. But it ... read more

Geo: 19.4308, -155.238I spent two full days in the shadow of Pele. I have to say I loved Volcanoes National Park. There is so much to see and so many hikes to take. You definitely need one full day, but two would be great if you want to add on some of the longer hikes along the crater floor and spend more time just looking at things. Expect rain since the park is in a rainforest and don't let it ruin your time there. My room at Chalet Kilauea was wonderful. The Africa Room is the least expensive, and smallest, room at the Chalet. It states that right on their website. The room was perfect for me as a single traveler. There was a double bed, flat screen TV, closet with storage space, large bathroom and ... read more

Geo: 19.4308, -155.238Today was a day of lots of firsts for me: first time standing on lava, first time walking through a lava tube and the first time seeing a road covered in lava. The destruction and birth of land are both on display at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The park is located about 30 minutes from Hilo and just outside the tiny town of Volcano. There is an entrance fee of $10 and your pass is good for 7 days. You will get your moneys worth even if you only spend one day. The whole day was a mix of mist and sun, with more mist than sun, and plenty of wind. The weather did nothing to stop my visit or the visit of lots of other people, most of whom seemed to be Japanese. ... read more

Geo: 19.4308, -155.238Long flights are not something I would call fun, but they are even less fun when there are delays, missed connections and wayward baggage! My flight from Chicago to Honolulu was delayed by almost 2 hours due to the incoming flight being delayed. And then flights to Honolulu and Tokyo were boarding at the same time from neighboring gates, which was apparently too confusing for the Tokyo passengers as they kept coming through our boarding lines and had to be redirected. The nice lady who was announcing the boarding groups repeatedly said "Honolulu is now boarding group 1. Tokyo is gate 16, not 17" but some failed to listen so that also slowed down our departure. Once on board, I had a nice aisle seat in the row that backs up to the bathroom. ... read more

It has been a few days since the Amazing Epic Adventure has started and it is beginning to get Epic. Today Alan and I took a helicopters tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tours and it was amazing. We saw both waterfalls and erupting volcano on the island of Hilo. It was Epic. What astonished me is in some places of the lava field there were small islands of rainforest untouched. Also in places that were covered and destroyed just five years ago are sprouting trees. I inquired if they were planted, and no, all natural growth. Amazing. As we flew over the main crater that is erupting, you can smell and taste the sulfur in the environment. Not much, just enough. I asked the pilot if the air temperature fluxuated over the crater. He said no, ... read more
