Blog 34 Honolulu, Hawai’i, April 28 ,2018 – Weather forecast: partly cloudy skies; humidity 85%, temperature 24°C, wind 8kts (3 Beaufort) – evening temperature 20°C, light clouds, moderate winds After five days at sea we docked in Honolulu Harbour right beside the historic landmark of the Aloha Tower. At this port of call we underwent a full inspection by the US Customs and Border Protection agents who came on board to see all the passengers and crew before we were allowed ashore. Five hundred guest have opted to leave the ship and fly home from here and five hundred are joining the ship to visit two other Hawai’ian islands before sailing on to Vancouver. So, this morning’s adventure with the inspection was a critical exercise. According to the instructions provided by the ship we had to ... read more

Hawaii is an interesting place. I’ve been to Hawaii so many times, I consider myself half local. Actually a better description might be a half tourist..... I started paying attention to odds and ends here on the island. First, the locals. There are implants who moved to Hawaii and there are true locals who grew up here. The implants are grateful about the beauty and the friendly weather year round, and takes full advantage of what Hawaii has to offer. The true locals, are “soulful”.... odd description I understand but that’s how they are. There is a deep connection with their culture, with the land and sea, and the all mighty spirit that provides them all of that. They are genuinely soulful. As a scientist I cannot fully comprehend how and who they look up to, ... read more

The one and only time I came to Hawaii was when I was 18 yrs old. It’s kind of funny because the only picture I’ve ever framed of just myself was taken on that trip. There was something about the way the North Shore made me feel. It was beautiful, I felt a world away from my reality and everything felt, smelled and looked like paradise. As I return to the enchanted island of Oahu I am reminded of the cycle of life and how incredibly beautiful it is that we weave ourselves in and out of beauty while we are here on this earth. We grow, we evolve, we have our children and then we are given an opportunity to look into the mirror through their eyes. I fully embrace this trip with no expectations ... read more

For the most part, this wrap up blog entry covers my extended travels in November and December. For a summary of my travels between July and October, refer to my Intermezzo entry. Homeward Bound To get home, I took the Intercity bus from National Park Village to Manukau (an Auckland suburb near the airport) and then I took the public bus to the airport. I was four hours early but not by choice. I had to wait 30 minutes for checkin to open. After checking in, I made my way to the Strata Lounge and wolfed down dinner and drank a lot of liquids. I was hungry and dehydrated after the long bus journey as I try not to eat and drink when I am at the mercy of bus drivers' schedules. I flew on Hawaiian ... read more

Coming Home I landed in Honolulu on the afternoon of September 30th. I took one look out the window, and thought to myself: "ugh". It was very hazy, about as bad as I have ever seen it. In Hawaii, haze means vog - a nasty concoction of smog and volcanic gas. It usually happens when the winds stop blowing. I stayed in Honolulu until October 6, when Jeff and I departed for Cuba. Fortunately, the vog cleared after a few days when the winds started up again. I had respiratory issues for a couple of days while the vog lingered. The transition home had a few minor kinks. I kept walking to the wrong side of the car. I forgot things that were routine, like setting the house alarm, bringing my keys with me, and bringing ... read more

I wrote this before I left for eastern Europe. Does it seem like everyone we know is headed out on a vacation or journey this fall? Yes, I am headed out on Tuesday. My cousins are headed to Japan. Some Washington friends are headed to the east coast. So, this begs the question, of why travel in the Fall?? I have several reasons, not necessarily in order of importance, but nonetheless, important to me, and obviously, some of you. First, most the kids, young, teens, college students, are back in school. This makes for quieter (thank you Bose Quiet Comfort) flights, fewer lines, and in general less perturbation in around famous tourist sights and popular casual restaurants. Now, I often travelled with my kids, mostly to Hawaii (winter or spring break), as well as Spring Training ... read more

The Midlife Crisis Calling this a Midlife Crisis might be a tad dramatic, but hey, "The Midlife Crisis Flashpacking Trip" rolls off the tongue nicely, doesn't it? I'm not really going through a midlife crisis, or at least not a stereotypical full-blown one. I have no immediate plans to trade in my trusty Prius for a newer, faster model. I'm not planning to trade in my spouse Jeff for a younger, faster model either. What is changing is that I am at a career crossroads, and I need some time to regroup and think. Check out the photo on the right. I've been carrying this venn diagram in my wallet for the past few months. Much of my recent career has been in the area shaded yellow. I'm good at what I do, and I make ... read more

Honolulu 28th March Honolulu Our return visit so no hike to Waikiki beach today. Another beautiful day so a walk around to the Aloha Tower. This is where we docked in 2014 so bought back some memories. It has been or seems to have been taken over by the Hawaiin University. It is being redeveloped so there were loads of empty units and no stalls in the concourse which we had remembered. So a walk into Downtown, not far, a good coffee and people watched. Lots of other things for passengers to do including a visit to Pearl Harbour, Diamond Head or Pali Lookout which we have done before. So back on board for the next call to the Big Island, Hawaii... read more

It was just a six-hour flight to Honolulu; but, this as they say, is the rest of the story. We’d just finished with our showers when our neighbor Cathy called to confirm that she was up and ready to take us to the airport at 6AM. She dropped us off at the Terminal 3 Departures for Hawaiian Airlines. We’d expected to clear security in a breeze; but, what was this. There was a considerable line for the TSA-preCheck and virtually no line for the normal security check-in. We soon found out why. Everyone was getting in “our” line, only to be told they needed to go through the normal screening line. One lady was livid that her travelling companion had been randomly selected for the preCheck; but, that she had not! The TSA agent told her, ... read more
