Hmm, it’s been a few days since I did one of these. Better get a wine. Or, better still, a trashy pre-mixed cocktail from the ABC Store. Now you’re talking! So, not wanting to let a day go to waste with transferring islands, everyone was ordered out of bed early to pack and head to Wailea for some horse riding and waterfall swimming. Our arrival was met with the obligatory waiver and cursory wave towards the helmets, which we chose to wear despite it not being required under our constitutional rights. We were assigned our horses and took our rightful place in line - I had to be second as my horse Dozer had recently been demoted from the position of guide and he was clearly smarting at the snub. We moseyed up the hill through ... read more

It was a hard night's sleep for Steve as his swimmer's ear became very painful, which then required an urgent care trip in the morning to get antibiotics pills plus ear drops. Everyone was also up very early, which was going to make for a long day considering the plan in the afternoon was to drive to Honolulu to order special Portuguese Malisadas from Leonard's Bakery and see Tory's cousin Dave at his restaurant, Pint and Jigger. Tory, Susie, and George entertained the kids all morning in the pools and waterslides while treating them to some much-deserved treats of Mickey Cookies. The kids had a tasty lunch of the minion-shaped chicken nuggets that Tory bought earlier in the week, one of the thrifty ways to save money on the vacation of grocery shopping for some meals ... read more

Woke up to sunshine and warm weather. Breakfast at the club today included fried spam! Spam sushi was also available. Fresh fruits. Fresh pastries. We were joined by 2 little birds at the empty chair at our table. We took the real Uber today to go to Pearl Harbor. Arrived at about 9. Had to have bag rental for $7 for the camera case. NO BAGS at all and the camera case was considered a bag. We did not have ticket for the boat to the Arizona reserved ahead so we headed to the "stand by" line. We heard there is sometimes a long wait so we got there early. We were on the 9:15 boat to the USS Arizona Memorial. The boat was not full and after a short briefing about the Arizona we were ... read more

From Benzinga: Gone but not forgotten US based airlines. Have you flown any of them back in the day? We’ve gathered a list of airlines that were once prominent names in the sky, of which are gone now but not forgotten. Mohawk Airlines 1945-1972 (not that I can recall, and no, I never got the haircut either)Why it died: Labor issues and strikes forced a merger with Allegheny Airlines. Fact: Hired the first African-American flight attendant in the U.S. Allegheny Airlines 1953-1979 (I recall a puddle jumper on US Scair that connected me to Pittsburg from Canton-Akron airport) Why it died: Rebranded as USAir, and eventually US Airways. Fact: Founded by the du Pont brothers Richard and Alexis as an airmail service in 1939. Aloha Airlines 1946-2008 (I flew them often back in the 80s, and ... read more

From none other than Food and Wine: Why are SPAM®'s products so popular in Hawaii? "We know what you're thinking; SPAM® products must grow on trees there. That would be neat, but to believe it you must have taken a coconut to the head. The true root of the island's love for SPAM® products goes back to World War II, when the luncheon meat was served to GIs. By the end of the war, SPAM® products were adopted into local culture, with Fried SPAM® Classic and rice becoming a popular meal. The unique flavor quickly found its way into other Hawaiian cuisine, from SPAM® Fried Wontons to SPAM® Musubi, and SPAM® products became a fixture for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Today you'll find SPAM® dishes served everywhere from convenience stores to restaurants, reflecting a demand that ... read more

From ABC News: url=https://abcnews.go.com/Health/us-life-expectancy-declined-2020-due-covid-report/story?id=81862300 US life expectancy declined in 2020 mainly due to COVID, report finds For the U.S. overall, life expectancy was 78.8 years in 2019, an increase of 0.1 years from 2018. States with the highest life expectancy were mostly in the Northeast and West states while states with the lowest life expectancy were Southern states. "The fact that there can be such large differences in life expectancy within one country, that's what I find most interesting," Dr. Elizabeth Arias, director of U.S. Life Tables at NCHS and first author of the study, told ABC News. Hawaiians had the highest life expectancy at birth in 2019, living to nearly 81 years old. The Aloha State also led the U.S. in highest life expectancy for w... read more

Did you know Hawaii was the first state to ban billboards? Leave broken appliances on your driveway, it will be gone by morning! Don't take sand from the beach or lava rocks from the Big Island. Bad things will happen to you until you return it. Pele the fire goddess will curse you! Don't wear shoes in the house, it is bad luck. Posing for a picture with three people, avoid the middle. Filipinos believe the middle position will die first. A person’s humility is generally deemed a more valuable characteristic than a person’s connections or financial worth. Wearing flashy clothes or name-dropping in Hawaii can be perceived as arrogance rather than pride. The shaka hand grew in popularity across Hawai‘i in the mid-20th century thanks in part to used car salesman David “Lippy” ... read more
