Woke up to sunshine and warm weather. Breakfast at the club today included fried spam! Spam sushi was also available. Fresh fruits. Fresh pastries. We were joined by 2 little birds at the empty chair at our table.
We took the real Uber today to go to Pearl Harbor. Arrived at about 9. Had to have bag rental for $7 for the camera case. NO BAGS at all and the camera case was considered a bag. We did not have ticket for the boat to the Arizona reserved ahead so we headed to the "stand by" line. We heard there is sometimes a long wait so we got there early. We were on the 9:15 boat to the USS Arizona Memorial. The boat was not full and after a short briefing about the Arizona we were on our way. The memorial was quiet. We walked around and looked at the memorial. The long list of names of those who were lost on the USS Arizona. Flowers were dropped into the water by the visitors. The boat ride was only a few minutes and we were also able to see the USS Battleship Missouri. The USS Arizona is considered the start of
WWll for the United States and the USS Battleship Missouri is considered the end of WWII as the signing of the paperwork in the Surrender Ceremony was completed on the ship September 2, 1945. We walked through the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. We toured the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park. We went to the Pacific Submarine Museum. We took the shuttle bus to the Battleship Missouri Memorial. We had some lunch purchased at a food truck at the entrance. Good food at a decent price. We then climbed on board to the Battleship Missouri Memorial. We toured the ship and found the spot of the signing of the surrender paperwork. We also saw the damage from the kamikaze plane that hit the Battleship Missouri. After the full tour of the Missouri we headed back to the shuttle bus stop to head to the Pear Harbor Aviation Museum. We saw lots of planes. We also did try out the Fighter Ace 360 Simulator in the museum. It was definitely a bit challenging, but worth the extra $10.70 per person. We got back on the bus back to the Visitor Center. We called the Uber for a ride back to our
hotel in Waikiki.
We spent some time relaxing at the pool and having some drinks and snacks at the club at our hotel. We took a swim and watched the sun set. It was the first clear night to see a sunset and it was a good one!
We had dinner at a sushi place.
We are happy that we were able to get the full Pearl Harbor experience today. We have reflected on the service and sacrifice of those who have given everything for our freedom. Thank you to all who have served. There were quotes at the Pearl Harbor Memorial facing towards the USS Arizona. I took pictures, but I do not believe that the pictures can be read easily, so I have included some here.
We are now in this war. We are all in it-all the way. Every single man, woman and child is a partner in the most tremendous undertaking of our American history.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, fireside chat, December 9, 1941
Few islanders went to bed that night…Outdoors there was silence…shortly before midnight, the moon began to rise, and a vivid lunar rainbow, the old Hawaiian omen
for victory, arched over the dark city.
