We woke up at the crack of dawn determined to squeeze in one last jaunt around the island. It seemed to take forever to get out of Waikiki. The streets felt familiar as if I didn’t need the extreme navigation skills Rio provided the day before. We had to be back at The University of Hawaii by 11:00 for Rio to tour the campus. My dear friend Lydia connected us with her dear friend Charlotte who is a professor at UH. The four of us cruised the coast, silent at times, one last absorption of paradise. We stopped in a small little town near BYU Hawaii to have breakfast at a cute little diner, Hukilau Cafe. I think it was the best breakfast we all had the entire time in Hawaii. We briefly stopped at Waimea ... read more

Today, Rio and I rented a car to explore the island while Lois and Skye opted for a beach day ???No matter what any of us did, time spent between a mother and her daughter is priceless. We all deserved a day like today. We began with a mad search for a rental car which seemed to be sold out almost everywhere in Waikiki. Lucky us - if we could only start the thing. It was a keyless, hybrid Ford Focus that seemed to have a personality of its own. Fortunately I recognized it was a hybrid, unlike the time in Ireland and 3 days into the rental I thought the car stalled at a stoplight! Rio was my navigator and she did a great job. Ultimately we ended up driving around almost the entire island. ... read more

The days are starting to blur together with fabulousness. I try not to think of how many days we have left and just embrace the moments of fabulous. Today we travel to Lanikai Beach. Hector has graciously offered to take us. Seeing the island thru the eyes of a local is such a great experience. As we leave the Hyatt Regency we are grateful for our stay. It’s a beautiful hotel, with a beautiful view and it’s been a wonderful experience for us. We cram our suitcases full and wonder how we got all of this stuff in them in the first place. We drop it off at our next hotel, The Hyatt Centric which is just as fabulous as The Regency. The manager Dan is so nice and accommodating, he upgrades us to a suite. ... read more

Today was a day that goes down in our history books. Hector and Christie picked us up at 7:30 am to go snorkeling. In our minds snorkeling is in a calm bay with bright sparkling tropical fish but boy were in for a whole other adventure! We headed out into the sea in Hector’s boat named La Carmen, after his sister. It gave me a sense of pride seeing our Captain in his element. Hector is the perfect example of someone following their dreams. We have known one another for close to 37 years so it’s really nice for me to see him here living the life. As we headed out into the ocean we passed people rowing, chartered fishing and dive boats, catamarans and even a boat named RIO in the harbor. I don’t think ... read more

Undoubtably, she will ask me today, “So, how does it feel to have a 19 yr old daughter?” My response will be - “Beautiful, it feels beautiful”. She came into this world 19 yrs ago today with so much fire and spice, it seemed to set the tone for her path. I often look at Rio and have said on countless occasions, “how did I ever give birth to you!” It’s become a joke at times but the truth of the matter is - Rio has always been the person I wished I could have been growing up. Our relationship has been shaped by life circumstances and I have always been conscious of Rio’s presence. It’s hard to miss it, she’s got this forceful nature that barges right into your heart ❤️ As I think back ... read more

My eyes popped open with ease, unlike the usual mundane “I need to pry them open and drag myself out of bed” kind of start to my day. There’s this feeling I get inside every time I fly. It’s excitement and it’s nerve wracking tied together with amazement and wonder. I’d like to give a shout out to my mom and grandparents for my love of travel. I spent my childhood summers flying from Florida to Pittsburgh ushered through the Atlanta airport by kind stewardesses dressed in polished uniforms, a funny hat, that now resembles what the employees of in n out wear, tied neatly was a fancy scarf around her neck that I dreamed of wearing when I grew up. And so my fascination began.... It’s now 4:00 am and Rio and I have to ... read more

The one and only time I came to Hawaii was when I was 18 yrs old. It’s kind of funny because the only picture I’ve ever framed of just myself was taken on that trip. There was something about the way the North Shore made me feel. It was beautiful, I felt a world away from my reality and everything felt, smelled and looked like paradise. As I return to the enchanted island of Oahu I am reminded of the cycle of life and how incredibly beautiful it is that we weave ourselves in and out of beauty while we are here on this earth. We grow, we evolve, we have our children and then we are given an opportunity to look into the mirror through their eyes. I fully embrace this trip with no expectations ... read more

The last time the girls were together was then they were around 3 yrs old. My how they've grown and changed into beautiful young women. In essence its almost as if we don't know Skye, but in our hearts we do. Us moms, Lois and I have had the recent privilege of reconnecting after a 16 year hiatus. We don't look back on the whys of a friendship gone astray, we look forward to all the endeavors we are now able to share. Lois found me on my last blog when I went to NYC this past summer so you can now officially classify me as a true blog believer. Recently I said, "when life gives you a second chance at a friendship gone astray, you take it!" And then....you go to Hawaii with your daughters ... read more
