Aloha! Day 2 started with a visit from Shana from Kauai Habitat for Humanity. It was great to get to meet her and the staff at Kauai Habitat, including a tour of the ReStore. She reaffirmed why we were here... to help make the dreams of others come full circle. She shared her story which includes her journey to homeownership through Habitat. We were lucky enough to get a tour of her beautiful home! After orientation, we were off to energize with a trip to Kauai Coffee Co. - the largest U.S. coffee estate. It was beautiful and interesting all at the same time. Kauai Coffee Co. is located adjacent to the Eleele Habitat for Humanity site where we are building, and we learned that the land we are building on was donated by Kauai Coffee ... read more

Day 3 Build day #1 was finally here! The team was up, eager and preparing early in the morning! We were on the jobsite by 8:30 am where we were greeted by the team of Kauai Habitat staff, and AmeriCorps members. They were as excited to have us there, as we were excited to be there. They were helpful, and patient as we learned what our priorities for the day were going to be. We were quick to have a team on the roof, a team working on trim and a team priming soffits. We were lucky enough to share lunch with some of the staff and learned a lot about their purpose for being here as well. The day ended with a tired team of Thrivent Builds participants! Bring on day 2! Aloha!... read more

A few weeks ago, we decided that we would make a day trip to Kauai. We looked into taking some kind of boat trip or private flight, but it is too far from Maui, roughly 250 miles, so we ended up booking flights there and back for the same day on Hawaiian Air. We wanted to do one of the helicopter tours of the island. None of us had been to Kauai before and with only one day, it should show us a lot of what many feel is the most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands. We booked a 2:00 PM flight with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. It was looking awfully cloudy up at the tops of the mountains and it turned out that our one hour flight was cut short after a half hour because we ... read more

Geo: 21.876, -159.446Quiet and uncrowded, the lush, green island of Kauai is known as the "Garden Isle." It is home to spectacular cliffs and canyons. The most popular shore excursions visit Waimea Canyon, the Wailua River and Fern Grotto and that's where we'll be going today. The alarm goes off at 6:30am. Time to get ready. It's Cream of Wheat and fruit for me, oatmeal for Mom. We meet in the Queen's Lounge at 8 but the ship is still positioning so we must wait. We still get off ahead of everyone else because this is a Holland America excursion, our only one on our trip. The balance will be independent tours like Ricky's. At 8:30, about a half hour late, we head out to board the bus. Mom was in the restroom when they called ... read more

We woke up on our own at 5:30am this morning. Still getting over the time change, we decided to walk down to the beach at our resort to watch the sunrise from Waipouli Beach. It was gorgeous. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. We got a late start hitting the road, half intentionally (since the views of the Na Pali coast are most vivid in the afternoon hours) and half because we’re going at our own island pace. It was 10:00am when we hit the road going east on route 50 toward Hanalei Bay beach and then the Na Pali coast hike entrance at Ke’e beach. We’re going to hike 4 miles each way (8 miles round trip) up to the 300’ secluded Hanakapia’I Falls. As we got closer to Hanalei Bay, we can see ... read more

We have arrived in Hawaii!! Yayy! It’s absolutely beautiful – just as we expected. What we didn’t expect was that the people would be so unpleasant. First our Hertz rental shuttle driver, than the Hertz counter lady, then the hotel receptionist, then our dinner’s waitress… our first day’s sample size has proved Kauai’s people are grumpy. We asked for a recommendation for a place to grab a quick bite to eat, and we were actually told McDonald’s is a Hawaiian favorite. I can’t tell if they were being sarcastic or serious. Maybe we were just unlucky, because misfortune continued for the next 24 hours. We arrived and went to bed early last night, it was about 3am East Coast time. We woke up at the bright and early hour of 4am. Not for any other reason ... read more

We arrived at the airport and were very excited about our flight over the island of Kauai until we were told we had to be weighed in! Now we have been on a cruise for 88 days so I was nervous because the clothes are not fitting the way they did. Fortunately only the office person sees the results and after doing her calculations we were told that collectively we were fine. After a big sigh of relief we were on our way. What a thrill to see this most unusual and beautiful island from the air. There is a stretch of shoreline that can only be seen by air or boat and it was breathtaking. We flew for an hour and snapped photos like crazy as we oohed and aahed. Back on the ground, the ... read more

Day 19 – Jan. 29, 2015 – Port of call: Nawiliwili, HI on the Island of Kaua’i – Weather forecast: sunny – temperature: 75°F/24°C – actual: 81°F/27°C – experienced mist then light showers leading to heavy showers on north shore We rose early as is our usual practice on a port day when we have an excursion booked and had our breakfast delivered to the room. Today we shared harbour space with the NCL Pride of America, the only ship to be permanently stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. Today we choose the shore excursion entitled: Hollywood Hawaii: Movies and Waterfalls which is scheduled to last approximately 6 hours. The description indicated that this excursion would be a comprehensive, in-depth and fun “movie-themed” sightseeing tour aboard a 25 seat capacity ‘Theatre on Wheels’ air-conditioned mini-bus. Throughout the ... read more
