Monday, May 8, 2006We flew out of Miami at 6 AM, so that meant a middle-of-the-night ride from Englewood. I slept most of the way to Salt Lake City; we were offered only a cold sandwich on the Honolulu flight. Honolulu is amazing from the air; we marveled at the skyscrapers and caught a glimpse of the Pearl Harbor Memorial. Next was a short flight to Kauai, only 102 miles. When we arrived at the airport, we learned our luggage did not arrive with us. We decided to pick up the car and drive to the hotel; we misunderstood the clerk at the car rental desk and drove to the Lawaii Resort instead of the Kauai Beach Resorts! Finally, armed ... read more

On the morning of our final full day in Hawaii we woke with all of the expectations that the remaining portion of our trip had been carefully orchestrated. Sharon had planned our itinerary down to the minute, with travel times first to Ono Char Burgers for lunch, then to Wailua Falls, from there up the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, stopping on the return route at one of the attractive sandy beaches that we’d driven by on the coast; but, this was all before she awoke with a bloody nose. While it was never a gushing uncontrollable bloody nose, it was somewhat relentless. We put our plans on hold, I worked on the blog. I had forgotten all about our morning meeting with the timeshare folks to get our “complimentary update” which we had agreed to attend ... read more

Despite all of the advanced scheduling that went into planning “My Big Day”, it actually began with a very, very lazy morning, waking up to the chilling hum of the overhead fan and hoping that I’d had the foresight to pack something green. Originally the trip had been planned so that it would include both Sharon’s birthday and mine as well. We’d hoped for a sunset dinner cruise; but, managed a last-minute catamaran whale watch outing that was scheduled to last two-hours. At this point in our vacation we didn’t want to risk anymore “three-hour-tours”. I searched on-line but couldn’t find any restaurants showing that they served “fish-and-chips”. I hope this doesn’t turn out to be a bummer having “My Big Day” fall on a Friday during Lent! We’d seen plenty of restaurants in the concierge’s ... read more

About midnight the outside temperature had come down enough for us to feel comfortable with fans going and open windows providing ample air flow. Sharon had checked again with the resort’s list of amenities, and A/C was not among them. She’d talked to the window-seat person next to us on our flight from Lihue about things to do/see in Kauai (where she lives). The Lighthouse had come up as a place to visit, where her parents had enjoyed seeing some rare birds just a few weeks earlier. And of course “The Grand Canyon of Hawaii”. We’d seen the turn-off to the lighthouse on our way to the timeshare; so, being close to us it was definitely on our list of places to visit. Also on our “To-Do” list was to see the Fern Grotto. We took ... read more

We’d set our alarm for six in the morning. Sharon had moved the last of our laundry from the dryer at midnight; but, I was asleep long before that. I showered, folded my laundry and packed everything into cubes, and from there fit everything into my suitcase and carryon. My suitcase now was two pounds heavier; but, at 45 pounds I was still golden. Sharon must have rearranged her luggage because she came in at 46 pounds; but, still under the 50 pound limit. We filled up the tank on our way to the airport. Check-in was really easy at the Fox rental car; and, to make things better the van was already there and we were on our way without a hitch. With all of the trouble and ordeals, and lengthy process or renting the ... read more

It seems that we never get tired of visiting our favorite islands, Hawaiian style. We will visit both Kauai, our favorite, and Maui, where our timeshare is located. We are meeting my brother, Bob, and his wife, Laura on Maui, along with my cousins (Gayle and Nick), also from Clovis. We are planning a grand birthday for the Feb. 20th birthdays, Sheri and Bob. And no matter how many times we visit the islands, we never get bored with the gracious island vibe and activities. It is always nice to get out of the colder mainland winters and stifling fog, and also transform our own attitude to the "island" attitude. We also have dear friends to visit, our favorite places to eat and play, and mostly, just relax. But I will spare you all of the ... read more

Hilo to Honolulu followed by Honolulu to Lihue. The latter being about a 30 minute flight gate to gate with a cruising altitude of around 10,000 feet. The low cruising altitude creates a scenic flight if you have a window seat. I had the window seat this round, I admired the mountains and coastline of Oahu and the clear water below. I spotted two whales in the ocean on this flight. Good start or so I thought. Kauai is a much older volcanic island than the Big Island which means the black lava rock has turned into red soil. This is noticeable from the plane window. Kauai, the garden island as it is known, is very much unlike the Big Island. Exceptionally green even the mountains are shades of bright greens. Home to the wettest place ... read more

Today we had our final build day on the beautiful island we have called home for the last week. We began our day an hour earlier than previous days which was a great idea because it was much cooler to start the day. We accomplished roofing half a house, continued the porch building, and knocked out some window trim, house trim, and painting. What a fantastic work day! In the afternoon we headed to a new beach to us called Poipui Beach. It was simply beautiful. Some of our group headed out to snorkel and saw some fabulous tropical fish. We also swam out to a sandbar and saw a Hawaiian monk seal. As a perfect ending to our experience we attended a special Mahalo dinner at the Church just down the street. We shared a ... read more

We've been working for four days and we have to admit we are a little bit tired and a little warm. (that's an understatement!) Tomorrow is our last build day. We are happy to report, we started and completed roofing a house. We also painted on several houses and are working on completing a front porch. We did have time to sneak over to the black sand beach to watch the sunset. Some of us also stayed up late so we could lay on the beach and watch the stars. It was worth it.... read more

Aloha! Welcome to day two of the build! Today was a tad bit hotter and we were all a tad bit sore. We started off the morning with a delicious breakfast made for us by our team leader to fuel us for the day. We got to the build site at 8:00am ready to continue the work we started yesterday and begin some new tasks. The roofing team worked hard to almost complete the first roof while another hard working team started building the porch. The third group worked hard to help clean up the job sites and ran into a few native creatures. YIKES! All in all, we ended the day pretty exhausted, yet we accomplished so much! For dinner we headed over to the Kauai Culinary Market to enjoy some delicious food and hit ... read more
