Cumberland Island National Seashore, St. Mary's, Georgia I think I understand the difference between a National Park and a National Monument. With some exceptions (like Dinosaur National Monument, which should really be a Park), Monuments are much smaller and are designed to protect just one cultural or natural resource. A fort, for example, makes for a good monument which can pretty much be seen in its entirety in a day or even a few hours. A Park, on the otherhand will always take several days to fully appreciate because it is geographically big and embraces so many different kinds of resources. Then, as I'm compiling The Bucket List, I run across a handful of entities called 'Seashores' or 'Lakeshores'. Being from the Rockies, we don't have a whole lot of those - none, actually - so ... read more

Crooked River State Park, St. Mary's, Georgia We didn't need to go anywhere yesterday, so we didn't - it was a down-day in Georgia. Slept in to start the day, which is always good. Spent a fair chunk of time catching up on my posts. Was not able to write the day we went to Canaveral, and the Verizon service was so poor I couldn't post what I was able to write. So spent yesterday writing about Canaveral and the Forts and then populated the posts with some of the better pictures. That took more time than I wanted it too and I didn't get a nap in, which is supposed to be a key part of a down-day. We also ended up doing four or five loads of laundry. We are finding that the humidity ... read more

Crooked River State Park, St. Mary, Georgia It was a short drive for us - less than a hundred miles. We headed north on Interstate 95, looped around Jacksonville, said our goodbyes to Florida, and crossed the state line into Georgia. Got off at mile marker 3 and proceeded to Crooked River State Park. If Faver Dykes in Florida was the wild side, Crooked River has it all tamed. Vegetation is the same, but the campsites in this park are all manicured and they are huge, probably designed for big motor homes. They have a miniature golf course here and a visitor center with rocking chairs on the porch. There is a sign advertising a sunset boat ride on Friday which we just might join. This is a State Park designed to just lay back and ... read more

What a change from Fernandina Beach! We spent the first few days at anchor in St Marys river across from the town. Marsh grasses on both sides, quiet, birds, occasional dolphins, and tide! The first night was very calm and we slept well assured that our anchor was well set. The second night, however, we got more of an idea how tides and winds can whiz your boat around when they oppose one another... Marty spent a good part of the night up monitoring the situation, our many positions, and the fact that we were sometimes traveling up to two knots while at anchor! The wind was pushing one way and the current another, so we would travel upstream with the current and our 200 ft of chain would drag to one side a bit, and ... read more

Over the holidays we went to stay with family in Georgia. It was so nice to get away for a solid week (rare with work & school schedules). While there, we went on a little excursion with two of my siblings to the Tabby Ruins, the former site of a sugar mill built in 1825. Though little but the walls remain, it is the largest and best preserved of all tabby remains in the Southeast part of the United States. 'Tabby' is the nickname of the material used to build the mill- a mixture of oyster shells, sand and water. It has been in a state of ruin since a fire there in the mid-1800's. The weather was a little nippy, but the sun shone so we enjoyed our brief exploration. Everyone but me ended up ... read more

November 17 – November 26, 2010 Happy Thanksgiving As mentioned in the last blog entry we explored Beaufort, SC which was also an interesting town to explore. We have really enjoyed taking the time to walk the streets of the various towns we stop in and learn more of the history of the area and as always meet helpful people along the way. After leaving Beaufort SC we bypassed stopping in the Hilton Head area as we had been there a few times to visit our friends Joe and Meredith. Instead we moved on past this area and anchored off the Doboy Sound in the Duplin River. This was another wonderful anchorage – we even got a chance to stop quickly at a seafood shop (where the shrimp boats come in) and get another pound of ... read more

When we left Josh's, we made arrangements to meet him after work for lunch. He had a short day with FedEx on Wednesday and hoped to be done by noon. We ended up meeting north of Jacksonville at a spot he and Trish wanted to go for a mushroom pesto pizza. We arrive a bit before him and then had one last chance to chat and be with him before actually heading north. We drove about less than 30 minutes and reached the Kings Bay Naval Station exit and followed the state road to the subdivision where Darrell and Robbie Coleman live. We met them in Iwakuni Japan when John was working there from 2000-2004. I hired Darrell into a management analyst position from the Family Service Center where he had been the head of Alcohol ... read more
