It was a wonderful easy start to the day and after walks and coffee time, I hit the beach. There isn't much of a beach but it's beautiful and inviting so after walking some of it I settled into my chair with a book and camera by my side and just relaxed. I am getting so brown now I only use sunscreen on my face. There was a perihelia around the sun from some high clouds overhead so I took a picture and to my surprise it came out fairly well. The water is warm but very shallow, you have to walk out quite a way to get chest deep. Another little walk and more exploring I found the small boat launch and a channel that goes around our little island. Then I found out from ... read more

Now this is what I'm talking about! We arrived on the Keys only to be stuck in one traffic jam after another, but it's easy to see why everybody wants to be here. We left little Quebec, a nick name for my last campground because of all the French Canadians, about 12:30 pm and headed south on the turnpike then south on US 1. So did the rest of the world. It was an easy drive with a beautiful cool breeze as a cold front went through the night before. So instead of 85 and humid, it was 72 and clear as a bell. So at each traffic stop there was a delightful breeze with a smell of the ocean to it which made the waiting tolerable. We arrived at Curry Hammock State Park, on Marathon ... read more

Thursday, 7 February, 2013 Tuesday was softball day again and another good turnout. Afterwards we went to the Laundromat and now have plenty of clean clothes. Yesterday was a good day to go to the Keys Turtle Hospital in Marathon. They rescue, rehabilitate and release injured and sick sea turtles. They have some permanent resident turtles, as they can’t release them if they are missing a limb or have what they call bubble butt. Bubble butt is when an injury causes air bubbles to collect under the shell, preventing them from diving as deep as they need to feed. Sea turtles main defense is their speed, and if they are missing a fin or have bubble butt, that really slows them down. They glue weights to the turtles’ shells to help them balance and dive in ... read more

Monday, 4 February, 2013 Friday we moved to site 23 in Long Key State Park, our last move until the tenth of February. It’s a shadier spot, but not as open to the breezes. (I say breeze, Kerry says wind.) It has been a bit cooler the last several days, nice. Saturday we went to Conch Key to see if anyone there remembers the old days when my grandparents had a cottage there. We were told the only old-timer has Alzheimer’s, so no help there. The woman I spoke with said some of the cottages could still be standing from that time, but doesn’t know for sure. I will have to look to see if I can find some pictures from back then and compare them to how it looks now. Sunday afternoon was softball day. ... read more

Thursday, 31 January, 2013 Monday we came back to beautiful Long Key State Park, back to site 57 for a few days. I think Long Key is our favorite park now, we love being right on the water. Crossing the bridges and looking out over the gorgeous colors of the water in Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean is always a treat. Once set up, we waded out into the Atlantic. The tide was out and it was very shallow a good ways out. We enjoyed watching the birds at low tide picking around in the water. Tuesday was another softball day and what a turnout there was, 28 players. It was a good game and everyone seemed to have fun even though the score was a bit lopsided, 22-10. The weather was great, as usual, ... read more

Tuesday, 22 January, 2013 Sunday we had to move campsites, from site 53 to site 57, a short easy move. One would think. The folks in site 57 were in no hurry as they were only moving down to site 14. Checkout is at one and Kerry had a softball game at two, so we were feeling a bit rushed to get moved. To top that off, Herb and Pam were coming down and we weren’t sure when they would get here, where we would be, etc. We really wanted to leave the park by one, but the guy in our site didn’t pull out until 1:10, so again we leveled, unhooked, plugged in and left for the ball field. There was a big turnout of players for the game so they decided to play 9 ... read more

Saturday, 19 January, 2013 Thursday morning was cloudy, but we left early for Marathon hoping for the best. We stopped at the Visitor Center on Vaca Key, where we picked up some postcards and brochures. It had started raining on the way, but stopped just as we were pulling into the VC. We were hopeful that was the last of the rain for the day, but it didn’t work out that way. By the time we reached the ball field, it was raining steadily and big puddles filled the infield. There were a few cars there, but no one was getting out in the rain, until Bobby got out and declared the morning a washout. We then went to Home Depot and fiddled around there, trying to come up with a solution to a minor leak ... read more

Wednesday, 16 January, 2013 Monday morning we got up early and enjoyed the sun coming up over the Atlantic Ocean. Bob and Gena were already out fishing, but had left their chairs behind at our campsite. Once they got back (fishless) we had breakfast together. Later we all went across the road where Gena, Bob and Kerry waded out into the Bay and fished some more. Bob caught the only fish, a small barracuda and a small lizard fish. Late in the afternoon Bob and Gena waded out into the ocean and fished some more, still no fish. Tuesday we were up early again. I love watching the sun rise while drinking my coffee and enjoying the ocean breezes. Then to the ballfield for softball, where I kept the score book for the first half of ... read more

Sunday, 13 January, 2013 Let’s get caught up. We got to Mom’s in Miami Springs on Tuesday and afternoon and spent until this morning with her. Mom and I played a lot of Skip Bo, coming out about even. I learned to play cut-throat Skip Bo from her. We planned to leave early this morning, but only managed 8:45, which isn’t too bad for us. We saw very little traffic on the Palmetto Expressway and the Turnpike to Florida City. We stopped there at Walmart for a few groceries and to fill up with gas. As we were leaving, we saw Bob and Gena gassing up at the Murphy. They arrived at Long Key State Park a bit later than we did, but we had to wait for our site to be vacated and theirs was ... read more
