In mid July, Anne and I traveled to northern New Mexico and southern Colorado to do a bit of hiking. We started in Colorado and finished in New Mexico. All of these areas were at higher elevations than we are used to hiking in, but we decided we’d just take it easy and do what we could. That worked out pretty well but in hindsight we probably should have started in New Mexico at the lower elevations, around 7,000 feet, before tackling the 10,000 feet and up that we found in Colorado. But we were able to complete most of the hikes we had planned on doing. I’ll post some pictures from the three main areas we visited on this page as well as a brief description of the trails we managed to hike. We flew ... read more

What a difference a day makes. Finally out of the desert, we wake to a temperature of 6C. We all look for our long tops to put on while we get ready in the morning. Today is a tough day of climbing. We're at the gateway to the Rocky Mountains. Dressing much warmer this morning we get off at 6:30am. After a gentle start the road starts pointing up but instead of sandy or scrubby desert we are treated to magnificent vistas of pine tree covered mountains. The huge ones dotted around still showing the remains of the winter snow. As we climb to the first main mountain pass of the day Hersperus Mountain towers over us at 4000m. As we approach the pass we see a bike event in progress. It was called Ride the ... read more

September 21, 2014 We began this journey flying into Durango, then rented a car and drove east to The Springs Resort and Spa in Pagosa Springs, CO. The spa was a welcome respite from our long flight! This European style resort, located on the San Juan River, has very reasonable “motel” rooms on the back side of the more expensive, and quite lovely inn. Our room was not plush but it was clean and had a very comfortable bed, all that I really needed. All pool amenities are included in your stay including robes and a 24-hour beverage bar that includes coffee, hot chocolate and juice but the bonus was you get a water bottle with free refill stations around the resort saving bottle waste. There are also day rates for those not staying at the ... read more

Billowing, gray clouds hung above us for more than three hours as we drove south and east into Colorado on Saturday. But beneath these low overcast skies the aspen groves glowed. Then, as we drove into Durango, Colorado, the sun came out and the quaking aspens sparkled. As we entered the Weminuche Wilderness, the golden aspens were a beautiful contrast to the dark green conifers, creating a magnificent tapestry on the mountainsides. As we climbed to and over the Wolf Creek Pass (10,856 ft.) we were stunned to pass mile after mile of gray Engelmann spruce. Heavy clouds scraping the mountain tops left signatures of rime ice and a shroud of misty clouds draping the highest trees of this sad sight. "Drive over Wolf Creek Pass, and you’ll notice a grim reality: most of the mountain’s ... read more

30th June After a day of feeling really tired and lethargic it was party time! Jon and I headed to Bridget's place in Baker after work and had a couple of beers at her place with her, her sister Caitlin and fiancee Rick. They are all really lovely, as is Bridget's house. After beers, we walked a couple of blocks to a Mexican restaurant - El Diablo, where we had a few more beers and some amazing food. After dinner, we walked back to Bridget's - she had to work on Friday so we had another beer, listened to some music and headed home in a massive storm. 1st July We got up at 5.50am packed and left at 6.30am for Pagosa Springs. After picking up essential supplies (Oreos and Cheetos), we drove 4 hours to ... read more

March 24, 2011 Pagosa Springs, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico Up drinking my coffee and thinking things over. I was considering staying another day but it's snowing , windy and cold here in Pagosa Springs which has 7126 ft elevation. I usually don't get on the road before 1100 anyway so that will give other drivers tires time to melt off any snow or ice. I was looking forward to going to Santa Fe because I was thinking I would finally get back below 7000 feet again but checked the elevation of Santa Fe this morning and it is 7260 ft............?!! As long as I am below 6000 ft seems to be no problem but around 7000 ft the altitude starts to make me short of breath and dizzy sometime. Oh well.......guess I'll soldier ... read more

Wednesday March 23 Cortez to Pagosa Springs, Colorado Drove about 110 miles today from Cortez to Pagosa Springs. That's mountain miles and quite a bit different than country miles. Another climb up and over a pass and back down into the other side. Arrived at Pagosa Springs and had intended to just pass through on the way to Santa Fe but instead spent the day looking at everything, mostly the hot springs. Found a reasonable room and am staying the night and will decide tonight if it is worth another $50 for a room here plus $25 to visit the springs tomorrow. There are 28 of them from cold river water to 110 degrees. There are no real stores in the town of Pagosa Springs. If you want groceries etc you have to drive back West ... read more

Hi Left Vegas and drove straight north to Utah. The mountains are absolutely breathtaking. Driving through them can be a little intimidating. I am still wondering why Bill said, (before we hit the mountains) if you want to drive, I could use a break. And so silly me, got behind the wheel and drove through 11 miles of the highest mountains I have ever seen, on the most narrow and curved road. Boy, was I nervous. Really annoyed me watching Bill snapping all the pictures (which Tonya asked for) while I was gripping the steering wheel, with sweat pouring down me. As we are heading into Arizona, the Rockies shoud be a piece of cake! We travelled across Utah into Arizona again, pretty much hugging the border between New Mexico and Arizona. In about 3 hours ... read more

RV Travels Colorado - Elk, Mule Deer, Ducks, Dippers, Hot Springs and Mesas RV Travels Colorado - Elk, Mule Deer, Ducks, Dippers, Hot Springs and Mesas The drive from Albuquerque New Mexico to Pagosa Springs, Colorado can be routed through the mountains or around the mountains. Guess which we chose. I have seen high mountains, steep mountains, snowy mountains, gray mountains, brown mountains, red mountains, everything but green mountains - they are all high and cold and I can’t breathe where there is no oxygen. I am a Flatlander. Hence, around the mountains we go; through Santa Fe, up 84 and straight into Pagosa Springs, which is a sweet little place where Main Street is fogged by the steam coming from pools of hot mineral springs, the existence of which, drew me there to begin with. ... read more
