Smoke from the Arizona wildfires made Pike's Peak a little hazy from our campsite in Colorado Springs. So we took the cog railway up to the top! The train was new, built in Switzerland. We drank lots of water to fend off altitude sickness. The views were spectacular. They only let you stay "up top" 40 minutes; otherwise, people get goofy, throw-up, and it makes for a bad day. Back on the ground we found the train that Tom rode over 50 years ago as a little kid. Sadly, it was put in a place of honor and displayed as an antique! Enough said about that. We took the opportunity while here to tour the Airforce Academy. Now we've seen Airforce, Marines, Army and Navy. We'll have to go back East to visit the Coast Guard ... read more

Leaving Salt Lake We got up early to leave Salt Lake City. And it looks like our run of bad weather is over or perhaps we left it in the west because as soon as we started home--it got less and less congenial. Driving down US 15 toward Provo was beautiful. I much prefer Provo to Salt Lake City, although I’m not sure why. Soon we turned east onto highway 6, which would take us to US 70 east. Highway 70 goes between the toes of some big mountains. And evidently it’s quite a wind corridor because in the crook of one of the toes were Wind-turbines. Again we hit mountains—they come in waves…from San Francisco we crossed the Sierra Nevada’s, then the Monitor Ranges in Nevada and now the San Juan Mountains and Sange de ... read more

Our main purpose in CO Springs was to visit my aunt and uncle and one cousin and her family. This was the first time for our kids to meet them, and the first in a long time for me to visit with them. It was really great to catch up, to hear about their work, life, and ministry there. They were so generous to let us stay in their home for a few days, to make meals for us, to let us make a Chinese meal for them, and to take us to see great places, including Charis Bible College, Focus on the Family's Whit's End, Garden of the Gods, and the mountain-side zoo! Besides drinking one of Whit's wodfamchocsods or feeding giraffes, we also visited the Air-force Academy and climbed Pulpit Rock. We were very ... read more

Garden of the Gods is in Colorado Springs, which is about an hour's drive from our home. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, and it's completely free to go. You can drive through it, hike through it, or even get a permit to climb some of the stronger formations. I'm not a climber, but I go to Garden of the Gods every few years or so to hike through and enjoy the beauty. Andrew and I had a friend's wedding to attend yesterday, so we decided to take Oliver and make a weekend of the trip. First thing this morning, we packed our things and drove to the park. It opens at 5am, and we were there well before 8am. The sun was still low in the sky, and it cast beautiful ... read more

The drive into Colorado Springs was plagued by lots and lots of road construction - an occurrence we have encountered throughout the country. Funded primarily from federal stimulus money, the road construction has clearly put many people back to work. Bummer that it's in the middle of the longest road trip of our lives (thus far, anyways!). The two lane highways are merged into one lane where the ongoing traffic is held up on the other side for 15-20 minutes at a time. Frustrating when you get 30-45 miles away from your destination after being on the road for hours and hours! But we got here and checked into the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs, Colorado. One observation - we really suspect that the recession is over. There are so many people in restaurants, shopping, staying ... read more

Day 16 Colorado Springs, CO It was nice waking up and staying put. We decided that we had too much to see here before dashing off across the plains . . . plus the Marriott here is really nice!! We got up slowly and headed off for the road Don has been waiting for. One of the roads on his bucket list! The road up to the top of Pikes Peak. On our way to Pikes Peak we passed...you guessed it....Santa's Workshop at the North Pole! No time to stop (as tempting as it was) we had a mission...to get to the top of the peak...and hopefully down again! The lady at the gate gave us driving or should I say braking directions and a guide book to give me something to look at other than....DOWN.....yikes! ... read more

Day 15 Grand Junction to Colorado Springs, CO Happy Fourth of July America!! Thank you for all of the beautiful National Parks!!!!!! Grest day today, we found our way to . . . yep you guessed it . . . Wal-mart!! Whoot! Everyone has to go at least once or twice on a road trip! Leaving the parking lot, we took a southerly route on 50 to Colorado Springs. Why cross a state in 3 hours when you can take 8? By the way, this is the same 50 that takes us to Ocean City, MD! We headed south so we could make an unscheduled stop at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison park. (Follow the link for more information on this little-known canyon National Park.) We took the South Rim road and found that the ... read more

May 18th. On Tuesday, we head for Denver to visit with Leigh's cousin Ruth. Since she is the historian of the Mueller clan, we plan to talk a bit about the Mueller family which settled in Iowa in the 1840's. We have a great time talking with Ruth and her daughter Brenda and spend much time poring over her genealogy albums. I get a much better sense of all the Mueller ancestors and their histories. Later in our trip, we plan to visit Walnut, Iowa where many of the Muellers settled and built homes. May 19th. Wednesday afternoon we head down to Colorado Springs to meet Jack Thomas and his wife Margo. Both Jack and I have been researching ancestors on the Thomas side of the family and have been corresponding via email after we "met" ... read more

In just a couple of months, we will leave on a year-long trip around the world. Well not exactly going around the world, but visiting a lot of places in different parts of the world. We start July 1 with two weeks on the Colorado Trail and then actually leave the country on July 24. First up-South Africa! Tune-in in July for updates. ... read more
