Day 12: Latitude 38.77, Longitude -106.13 , 62 degrees, cloudy Thunderstorms expected. After filling up with a great breakfast at the Evergreen Diner, the boys and I headed down the road and tackled the aerial course at Brown's Canyon. They called us off the course a few minutes early as lighting was coming through. No worries, the zip line part was fun but the real adventure lay ahead. Luc and I spent the afternoon rafting the Arkansas River. Rafting through the Rockies was more than beautiful. Lightning passed nearby but never fully came through and then the clouds parted. We also had really great guides; Luke, Jacob and Matt. Jacob was in our boat and made sure we had a good time. Luc also made friends with the other guides, Luke and Matt. As it turns ... read more

Day 11. We said good bye to the Blue Bell Lodge in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, as we were leaving we spotted a few more buffalo containing a couple of very large bulls. I only took a few pics of those buffalo as some other tourist was approaching the buffaloes on foot to get a better picture. Right then I had a choice to make, switch to video and watch this guy get pummeled or get in the car and get away safely. Choosing the latter we departed and then made our way down through Wyoming. Once again, I could not convince Tracey to take a half hour detour so we could set foot in a different state--this time, Nebraska. Still bringing the rain and below 60 degree temps ... read more

After a lazy morning at our hotel in Snowmass, Andrew and I made the short drive down to breakfast in Aspen. We parked on Main Street and strolled a few blocks to a breakfast place called Aspen Over Easy. The streets were lined with unlocked bikes and mopeds. It's such a cute town! Aspen Over Easy was bustling! Servers were rushing food and drinks out to people. The restaurant was buzzing with people's conversations. The liveliness was fun. We ordered breakfast and enjoyed people watching. When we were finished, we decided to start making our way back home. We didn't want to retrace our steps on I-70, and so we drove a loop around the state. We took Highway 82 east out of Aspen and over Independence Pass, south on Highway 24 to Buena Vista, and ... read more

We had been practicing on smaller hikes for the last couple of weekends, and now it was time. There are 53 official 14ers in Colorado, the place of our residence. The 4th of July seemed like perfect timing to try one of these babies out. If George Washington could drive out the English, we could certainly walk fourteen thousand feet into the air and wave our hands like the crazy Americans we are. That was at least the plan. It all began swimmingly, literally. Having driven down to the collegiate peaks, we stopped at the Cottonwood Hotsprings. Nothing like sitting in one of 6 pool sized hot tubs till midnight enjoying some fine company. These hot springs are not fully natural so no smells of sulphur, but man does it feel good to be engulfed in ... read more

Conquering the Mountain ~ a fitting title conquering a mountain or conquering ones fear. Fear of heigths, fear of failure, fear of a dream left unfullfilled. Well, I had this dream of hiking up a mountain in Colorado, a mountain 14000 plus feet high. Now one could think that at my age that would be a crazy dream especially given the fact that I am not the athletic type and usually are afraid of heights. I had this dream ever since I saw this documentary about a company striving for healthier employees and rewarding the ones that followed through with a trip to the Rockies where they would hike to the top of one of those mountains. I found the idea so intriguing that I decided to do this myself. After Danica and Kevin moved to ... read more

We drove down to Buena Vista - we’ll Jon did since I basically sat in the back and did nothing. The town of Buena Vista is located in central Colorado roughly midway between Salida and Leadville . The area between Buena Vista and Salida is often referred to as the "Banana Belt", due to its relatively mild winters - I’m thankful that it’s not referred to as the “Banana Hammock Belt”. The town lies at the base of the 14,000+ peaks of the Collegiate Peaks of the Sawatch Range. In summer, Buena Vista is a popular location for outdoor activities - whitewater rafting, fly fishing, mountain climbing etc. The town itself is pretty small. On the way up to our camping spot near Cottonwood Lake, it isn’t hard to take notice of the surrounding properties. I ... read more
