We did it! Climbed Katahdin...it was hard and we had the weather against us. But before I get into details let me back up, as it has been awhile since my last blog. Last time I wrote we were off the trail, we went to our friend’s wedding in Plymouth NH, celebrated my bday and I had recovered from Giardia. On Sept 10th we set out for Monson, ME. Left our car at a hostel and had them drive us to Caratunk, ME. We took 3 days and hiked this section; it was tough to be out on the trail again after 2 weeks off. It was mid-September and the weather was finally cooling off. The trees were starting to change colors and the trail took on a completely different look. After arriving back in Monson, ... read more

Geo: 39.4817, -106.038We were able to have a leisurely morning, as our stop for the day was the feed zone. We'd seen a finish (Telluride), a KOM (Cottonwood), we'd have 2 starts (Breckenridge and Golden), and a mountaintop finish (Flagstaff), so we thought this would be a good chance to catch our first ever feed zone.Dejo had talked to the guys setting up the KOM arch the day before, and learned where the feed zone would be. When we found it, there was a large pullout, which made sense to us. We found a spot, and settled in to listen to the race coverage.I managed to get enough spray chalk out of the cans to write "Nom Nom", but no more.Dejo noticed some cars parked at the curve, just up the road, but we thought nothing of ... read more

Saturday 18th June 2011 First stop on today's adventure was the town of Breckenridge only a short drive from Silverthorne. The weather had resumed its perfect status, clear blue skies and little wind. First stop was at the Information Centre where it was confirmed that there would be a guided tour commencing at 11am. As it was only 10.15, we wandered off down the main street, coincidentally named Main Street, looking into shops and art galleries. Judy found a lovely fleece top, her colour, which just had to be bought to help fill the extra suitcase we purchased yesterday. We noted a cafe named 'Clints' to go back to after our tour. The tour guide, Gail, was dressed in period costume and told us that the theme of the walk was "How the miners spent their ... read more

We drove the back road 128 from Moab - up about 20 miles of beautiful canyon along the Colorado River - then out to the open range where we had to wait for a couple cattle to cross the road! That night was spent in Colorado River Park in Palisade and of course Ernie had to get some rocks out of the Colorado River. He also picked up lots of sand! Nice fire and a bright moon, warm weather in the morning. Then on to Breckenridge from the nice warm weather to 9600 ft. Went to see our land in Fairplay and we found out why we built in NH - it was 33 and snowing! Did have a great meal at Silverheels - the first place we dined when we stayed out here 11 yrs ... read more

We had planned to hike today but decided I needed some specialized camera filters. No camera stores nearby but we found one in Breckenridge and drove there. It was a scenic drive and we LOVED the small town of Frisco on the way there. Breckenridge is VERY upscale and has a cool factor, but it is too much. We had lunch in Breckenridge just as the daily afternoon thunderstorm came. It spoiled my chance for good pictures - although I took several, the lighting was poor and they needed a lot of editing. Copper Mountain on the way back was very impressive. We stopped and had dinner in Vail at Garfinkels right at the bottom of the ski lifts. We tried to catch a concert but by the time we found out where it was, it ... read more

I flew into Denver Thursday about 1:30 and made the two, or so hour drive through the mountains to meet my family in Breckenridge. Mom, Dad, Maleka and Maleka’s little friend Natalie. It was a beautiful day driving up through the mountains, and it got me excited to get on my board. By the time I had gotten to the condo the girls and Dad were in the pool. I decided to join them there after dropping my board off to get edged and waxed. We met Ryan from California and Emily from Minnesota in the pool. They were throwing snowballs up over a 20 foot wall where three hot tubs were located. I could not resist so I joined in on the fun, jumping out of the pool, grabbing handfuls of snow, and then launching ... read more

Update from Breckenridge! Sorry I've totally fallen off the face of the earth. There's not a whole lot to report from Breck, other than the fact that I'm having a GREAT time and basically working, skiing, or sleeping all day, every day. The sameness of the routine is why I haven't felt compelled to post anything in a while, although obviously my readers don't know that! My job at Ski Country ended when the resort closed on April 19, although I'll be able to start up again in October when we're gearing up for the ski season. I DO have an update, though, which is that I've decided to stay in Breck longer than originally planned. As I said, I'm having fun, and rather than going into the Peace Corps in August (a possibility) I've decided ... read more

I got a ride into Breckenridge with a guy I met on the bus, it was dumping snow, I smiled. For the first few days I stayed at the Fireside Inn, the only dorm in town and by far the cheapest place to stay. It was here that I met future room mates and partners in crime Marcos, Nacho, Pablo and Martin (Argentinian), Flavio (Brazilian) and Nick (Kiwi). First item on the agenda was to secure a warm and humble abode for the winter. All I wanted from a house was a hot tub and a deck covered in snow to store bottles of liquor, the only problem with this ingenious plan was the average price of a house like this, we looked at one and it was way beyond our price range.
