Friday started out as a lazy day. We decided to sleep in, have a late brunch and simplify things a bit. We decided against both a hard nature hike and the more "suburban" Beaver Valley hikes. Going to Leadville had been on our list of things to do earlier in the week, so we revisited that idea and made the one-hour trip south. Leadville was the center of Colorado mining ages ago, and has a scenic narrow gauge train ride that follows a former route to a mining camp. Leadville also hosts the two highest mountain peaks in the U.S., Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive, both over 14,000 feet in elevation. Leadville is a VERY different place from the resort towns 40 miles north - clearly a town that was once more prosperous, but still very ... read more

Finally today we got to tackle Shrine Mountain Trail, accessible from near the summit of Vail Pass. We had heard it was not only the pinnacle of wildflower growth (which was true) but also would offer us great vistas of about 6 mountain ranges. The overcast skies meant the picture taking of flowers was great, the views of other mountain ranges not so much. We started by driving up some dirt roads until we got to about 10,500 feet. Then another 2 miles of precarious driving which Dan white-knuckled the entire way. The width was good for a car and a half. The dropoff from the road was one you'd rather not look down. And no guard rail. That took us to an elevation of 11,200 feet which is where our hike started. It was anything ... read more

Today was really two different days for us. The first half was waiting for the steady rain to ease up. Some shopping in Vail, some reading, getting a haircut - waiting for the day to begin. The second half was more like it. Rain eased up around 2:30 and we decided it was too wet to do some of the hiking we had planned, so we walked and bused to the nearby Beaver Creek center to learn more about the hiking trails there. Before long we had decided to embark on some hiking anyway, and more than three hours, seven trails and about 10-12 miles later we had a remarkable day. The first few trails were hard, and uphill. The fresh rain gave the whole area a wonderful fresh smell of spruce, but footing was tricky ... read more

Today was a great day. We rented bikes and were taken to the Vail Pass summit. The arrangement was to pick us up in Vail 2 1/2 hours later. We opted to instead keep the bikes the rest of the day and ride them the rest of the way to Avon and return them at the lodge. It was a 26 mile trip in total, and it was exhilarating! The early parts of the the trip were a snap - at one point I traveled a long time - perhaps at least a couple of miles without pedaling, just working the brakes as we changed altitude. We stopped in Vail Village and Lionshead to explore, shop and eat. We had absolutely outstanding German food at Pepis in Vail Village. Paula had cabbage rolls and Dan had ... read more

We had planned to hike today but decided I needed some specialized camera filters. No camera stores nearby but we found one in Breckenridge and drove there. It was a scenic drive and we LOVED the small town of Frisco on the way there. Breckenridge is VERY upscale and has a cool factor, but it is too much. We had lunch in Breckenridge just as the daily afternoon thunderstorm came. It spoiled my chance for good pictures - although I took several, the lighting was poor and they needed a lot of editing. Copper Mountain on the way back was very impressive. We stopped and had dinner in Vail at Garfinkels right at the bottom of the ski lifts. We tried to catch a concert but by the time we found out where it was, it ... read more

Here are some pictures from our first full day. Today was a full day. We went to an art fair in the morning - by accident, we were going for a walk by the lake near our lodge. The quality of the art was out of this world. They also had wine tasting, which we thoroughly enjoyed on a Sunday morning. We must have, we ordered a case of Austrian wine to be shipped to our home. We had a simple lunch and got on our Jeep tour. Wolf was the name of the driver, he moved from Austria (huh) in 1962 to Toronto originally, then on to Whistler BC. He was there just a year before coming to this area. He was a most interesting tour guide. He knew every kind of plant there was, ... read more
