Day 39 – Thursday – San Simeon, California Another different and interesting day for us today. We headed out of San Francisco this morning (via the crookest street!!!) to Hearst Castle. Have to admin NOT my favorite drive at all and it ended up taking us a good hour or two longer than we had expected to get to the Castle (in time for our booked tour). Not to mention, we had to drive through army land to get to the coast (an experience in itself, we even saw a tank!!!) and gawwwd, we traversed the longest and windiest road EVER (forget Lombard Street). I swear, the turns/curves/winds went on for about an hour and I was SICK by the end of it!!! Thankfully once we got out of the car I started to feel ... read more

Welcome to my new travel blog! I just wanted to send a note from home, perhaps with some brief updates. My last day at my nanny job will be June 29th, just moments before my July 1st departure. Next week I will be focusing on packing up and moving out the majority of my items and taking them to my house in Torrance. I reall do not have too much here (mainly photo albums/books/clothes/movies). I have gotten to the point (finally) where I do not really want much "stuff" anymore. I would like to try to sell some of my clothes and older shoes and perhaps donate some random stuff. I already got rid of 4 generous boxes of "stuff." I have gotten a bit better about buying things and being a pack rat. Anyhow... ... read more

Day 15 and 16 - Friday and Saturday 8 and 9 June 2007 - LA and Universal Studios Well, on Friday morning we left San Simeon via a really nice, fairly straight freeway and made our way to LA. We made pretty good time and arrived around 1pm and went straight to Universal Studios for the afternoon. I love theme parks!!! lol There are some great rides here and especially as they are movie themed, I love them even more!! The Mummy ride was a fave with us all, as well as the Jurassic Park ride and we all really enjoyed the back lot tour of the studios. It was so cool to see props and buildings that had been used in real movies. Some that I remember include: Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives; lake ... read more

Day 38 – Wednesday – San Francisco, California This was a funnnnn day. We headed to the Exploratorium in the morning...which is like a kid's science hands on museum (Perth people think Scitech) it was SUPER fun! We ran around trying out all the experiments and having fun. When we arrived back to the hotel, us girls decided it was high time we got some pampering so all had pedicures and manicures in massage chairs. Mmmmm mmm mmmm! Following our pampering we had the most delish lunch - seriously I think it's one of the best meals i've had in the US - it was just at a local pasta/pizza bar - Amici's - and was GREAT! After time for lunch to settle we headed out to see Postcard Row/The Painted Ladies (a famous set ... read more

3 days remain until our disembarkment to the foreign lands of Europe. Feels good to finally have graduated from Cal Poly! Doesn't even seem like I have graduated though. Feels like next week I'll be back writing another pointless termpaper on the settlers of the Western frontier, or creating some abstract computer program that serves no purpose other than to confuse and aggravate the students opted to create the bloody thing. This past week I've remained busy by gardening in our 3.5 acre 'estate.' Also got some last minute things to take with me to Europe, namely: underwear that can dry in less than 4 minutes (might be handier than you would think after Running with the Bulls in Pamplona), a plug converter (essential), cool new shades, a few comic-travel books by Bill Bryson, and ... read more

Day 14, Thursday 7 June 2007, San Simeon and Hearst Castle OK, so after today's drive, I am officially sick of twisty turny, meandering, winding, up and down coastal roads!!! LOL We left San Fran quite early and on the way out, we drove down the twisty bit of Lombard Street, which was great fun! After that we headed out of SF and onto the freeway, which worked for a while, until we missed the turn off to the coast. Signage in the US leaves a little to be desired, I have to say. Either the sigh for a road is just after it (how does that help?) or the sign is so small or so last minute, that you miss the turn or don't even realise you've missed it until you come to a ... read more

It’s 10:00 a.m. on a Thursday morning. I’m sitting at SFO waiting for my flight to Quito. The time has finally arrived. I’ve been dreaming about this moment for months, years really. If someone had asked me 5 years ago if I’d be quitting my job and traveling the globe, I likely would have laughed in their face. The past few months have been a blur. I’ve gone through the motions of planning my trip, renting out my condo, putting my furniture in storage … all in preparation for this day. But not until this very moment does it all feel like it’s really happening. The past few weeks have been spent with friends and family saying my goodbyes. It’s the longest stretch of time I’ve been away from my family. Eight months doesn’t sound like ... read more
