My dad and I are off to Yosemite to explore for the weekend. We are meeting up with the Pehl side of the family to hike Half Dome. There are about seven of us doing the hike. I really had to talk my dad into the hike so I am hoping he does not kick this off his bucket list.... read more

Het stadje ligt even buiten Yosemite National Park. Morgen gaan we de natuur in! Waarschijnlijk gaan we aan de rand van Yosemite ... read more

After the great welcome we had at the Sequoia National Park by bear and deer and a great time walking among the giants we headed north to the Yosemite park. In the Yosemite we could also see sequoias and several different types of giant trees but what really impressed us was the gigantic rock formations and high waterfalls. We stayed in a very little town called Mariposa which is about 30 miles from the park. Everyday we drove in to the park very early. Mariposa is a quaint town and the architecture with old renovated buildings gives a real feel of the wild west. At the B&B we had freshly baked biscuits and cakes and lots of fruits for breakfast (yes, pounds keep pilling on). We had dinner there one evening and when we asked whether ... read more

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. Slept in today, but still had a full day in Yosemite Valley. It is quite possibly the most beautiful place that I have ever seen. There are giant granite towers on all sides, lots of water, and pine trees everywhere. Saw a bear when I was walking back from Lower Yosemite Falls. Vernal Falls was a hike, but completely awesome when I got to the top. Got a little bit wet from the mist coming off from that. Going to get something to eat tonight and take a soak in the hottub. Planning on going to the Tulomne Meadows area tomorrow.... read more

We went down to breakfast as it started and got straight in without waiting this time. Same fare, nothing too exciting. Back to the room to pack, and off to the Yosemite Valley. Not many people in the park yet - we were able to park just outside the general store. A quick visit to the visitor centre and we hopped onto the free shuttle to the bottom of the Vernal Falls hike. 1,000 ft ascent again - ouch! And pretty much straight up again! The walk followed the river for the entire climb. About half-way up it changes from a path to a climb on granite stairs - about 600 of them - and steep! Right through the "mist" zone, where we both got absolutely soaked. However, it's well worth it - the falls are ... read more

We were peeved to find that we had to put our name down and wait 15 mins to get a seat at breakfast. Breakfast itself was quite decent, albeit with limited options. We'd planned two hikes today. The 1st, Mariposa Groves to look at the giant sequoia trees. It's only a short drive from the Wawona Hotel and we arrived shortly after 9am. Armed with our $0.50 map, we head off to check out the main attractions. The trees are pretty damn big. Not quite as high as I'd imagined, but very thick trunks. Amazingly thick trunks. You'd have a hell of a time digging one of them out of your back yard! The grove is full of bloody big trees, and there's a bit of a hike between them. In all, we climbed 1000 ft ... read more

The free breakfast consisted of orange juice, your choice of 1 cereal, and pastries. The breakfast room seated a total of 4 people. I'm guessing not a lot of people opted for breakfast. Still, it was better than breakfast bars in the car! A relatively late start after yesterday's marathon drive. Soon we were approaching the park and the scenery gave hints as to what was in store. Plenty of pulling over to the side of the road to take photos! Finally we could see Half-Dome - we were close! After entering the park gates we stopped off at the visitor centre to ask about walks etc and pick up some maps. We were somewhat surprised to learn that the Wawona Hotel - where we'd booked a few weeks before leaving - was actually about 30 ... read more

Yosemite is set up for people on short breaks that don't mind spending lots of money quickly. The price of accommodation in and just outside the park is stupid expensive, and once you´re booked into these places you´re held to ransom to eat in their overpriced restaurants because there's nowhere else to eat nearby. So me and Lynn stayed well away from all that in an little country town called Mariposa 43 miles from the park entrance. It was nice, nice and cheap and surrounded by mountain scenery. By luck when we visited Yosemite it was Spring and we found out that that has important benefits. In Spring glacial melt off the mountains feeds spectacular waterfalls into the valley that are all but gone by Summer. I think I read that two or three of the ... read more
