Currently on our 2nd big US trip.

I'm typing this entry at 9:15am, the morning after the launch, as I sit in the condo overlooking Cocoa Beach on another perfect day. So much has happened in the last 48 hours it's going to be difficult to recall it all, but here goes... We joined the tour bus at 8:15am just up the road. We were booked on one of the Kennedy Space Centre (KSC) tours, but part of the Administrator's Guest group, which meant we had access to some pretty cool stuff. First stop was the International Space Station (ISS) Processing Building. This building is large enough to hold the entire ISS - the size of a football field including end zones - and is where they've basically laid out the ISS in pieces before putting it into orbit piece by piece. We ... read more

We all slept in until 10am, not surprisingly. Not a big deal as we had a "lazy" day today and we soon found out that there's not a lot to see around Cocoa Beach without travelling a long way. After breakfast Penny and the kids went with Jacki to buy some gear for the pool/beach and we took the minivan to explore the souvenir shops for lack of anything else to see. The cars here are big. So you can imagine how big the minivans are! Still, it didn't take too long to get back into the groove of driving on the wrong side of the road again. We didn't have far to go - only a few minutes up the road until we happened across the famous "Ron Jons" surf shop amidst a few similar ... read more

Up at 7am to get ready for the flight to Orlando. We got out the door right on 9am, which was the time we'd planned on leaving. Not much to report on the flight to Dallas. We had a 2 hour stop-over which we used to grab some lunch - pre-packaged sandwiches as all the food places were closing at it was about 5pm local time. The flight to Orlando was even less interesting. After grabbing our bags we headed out to pick up the minivan. Here is where the GPS got the acid test, and it passed with flying colours. The only problem is that it seems to have no POIs programmed, which just means you need to know the address of where you're going, not just the name. We can liv with that I ... read more

Penny took the girls to school while we made ourselves breakfast, and then we walked Talia across the road to pre-school. Penny then kindly gave us free admission tickets and then subsequently dropped us off at the San Diego Zoo - door-to-door service again! Having member guest passes meant we didn't even have to line up at the gates - walked straight in. We jumped straight onto the zoo tour bus for a 40 minute narrated tour of the zoo. The weather was absolutely perfect - mostly sunny but not too hot. After the tour we decided to set out on roughly the same route, which would enable us to see most of the zoo. After walking a few hours we decided to sit down and eat the packed lunch that Penny had prepared for us! ... read more

We were a little too keen to sample the perks of business class travel - arriving at the airport a full hour before the check-in even opened! When we finally checked in we headed straight for the lounge, the 1st ones to arrive! It didn't take us long to sample the sandwiches and the cheese & biscuits - and I the scotch of course! We sat and read the paper and watched the TV and, with 45 mins still to board, I ordered a beef noodle dish. Just because I could! Finally it was boarding time, and boy did it feel good to walk down the business aisle, past the queue of cattle-class getting on the plane. The business section was only 3-4 rows deep, and I simply do not know how I will come back ... read more

One last day in the US, but we plan to make the most of it. First that familiar but forgettable breakfast, then we check out and head for the "Hollywood Forever" cemetary. This time Karina has done her research, and I've drawn a small map from the net. The cemetary is much larger than the other one we searched a few weeks ago, but armed with our map and only looking for 3 graves, it doesn't take long. Mel Blanc, Estel Getty (Golden Girls) whose grave has no headstone atm, and Don Adams (Maxwell Smart), whose headstone has a picture of him talking on his shoe-phone!!! It's quite a picturesque and peaceful cemetary, complete with ducks & their ducklings and even a few peacocks, and we do our best not to disturb the tranquility. Pleased with ... read more

We finished off the breakfast bars for breakfast and packed our bags to move on for the 2nd last time. We drove the short distance down to take a closer look at Morro Rock. It was an overcast (foggy?) morning and there was a chill in the wind again. We took a few photos from the roadside, then ventured down to the waterside to get a better view. To our surprise, a sea lion emerged from the water just a few feet below us! It was catching fish for breakfast, with an eager gallery of gulls floating on the water around it. I'm not sure whether the sea lion had to surface to actually eat the fish, or whether it was just playing with the birds, but it seemed to be a game where the birds ... read more

Down to the supermarket for more breakfast bars. We stumble across Nob Hill, which turns out to be the local supermarket that Penny used whilst living in Pacific Grove for a year. It's only a few streets away from her place in fact! After another breakfast-in-a-packet we headed out to find Penny's old place, a blue house near the sea. After some confusion we found it - and according to Penny who saw our photos yersterday, it looks exactly the same. We wandered over to the water but there were no seals around today. Still, I can imagine it would be a very pleasant place to live! We also passed the military language institute where Che must've studied Spanish. Time to head out to the Big Sur down Highway 1, the coastal highway. Quite spectacular scenery ... read more

Orange juice and breakfast bars again. Yuck. But quick and easy. Checkout isn't until 12 so we head up to Lombard Steet - the famous bit - and arrive around 10am. Not too many people this time of morning. We walk down it, then up again, and by the time we reach the top after taking a lot of pictures and getting towards 11am, it's starting to get crowded. Back to the motel - checkout and head back to the Wharf to find another Alcatraz book that Karina decided she should have bought yesterday. We finally found it, then had In'n'Out Burger for lunch. I should've got a double cheeseburger burger. :( Next stop, Columbus Street where Karina had seen some buildings with artwork that she wanted to photograph. She also got some good shots of ... read more

No breakfast here so it was orange juice and cereal bars again. Then we headed out to Pier 33 for the Alcatraz tour. Fisherman's Wharf was supposedly 20 mins walk from our motel on Lombard Street, which may technically be correct, but Pier 33 is about 45 mins. Fortunately we left in plenty of time. A classic SF morning - fog. Today we were dressed more appropriately, and despite the brisk walk it wasn't long before I donned my 1st layer of long sleeves. We arrived at the pier and collected our tickets - pre-booked from home a few months ago - and waited for poll position so we could get a good seat on the boat and hopefully good photos of the island as we approached. Although 1st in line for the 10:30am boat, we ... read more
