About Sequoias time zone and jet lag [2-4 July] days 69 to 71
Published: July 10th 2009North America » United States » California » VisaliaWe left Hong Kong on 2nd of July with Cathay Pacific flight CX880 at 23:40 to Los Angeles. We arrived on July 2nd in LA at 21:20 after an almost a 13 hour flight! Hong-Kong being 15 hours ahead of LA, this kind of mathematics is possible... As I am writing this text on July 10th I am still jet lagged, but that will be fixed over time. The next day we went to a small town called Tulare, close to Sequoia National Park. We had a great time hiking within this park, among the giants, some of them are several thousand years old! During one of our hikes we met a young black bear and on 2 occasions a dear. Being alone in the forest with these wild animals certainly is an experience we won't ... read more

Published: July 4th 2009North America » United States » California » Visalia3rd July, 2009. Visalia, California. Off out to Tulare this morning, approx 12 miles down the road and another 57,000 people (some cities are really close here, Fresno has 900,000 people and is 40 miles up the road). Looking for something particular as its Independence Day sales, found, purchased and stored ready for the trip home, that wasn't hard, Anyway were going to do a round trip of two other country towns but at midday when we walked out into the 96F heatwave we decided to go back to the RV park for a swim. The Fireworks sales places aren't doing a roaring trade but we saw one place today selling fireworks manned by none other than the Fire Brigade, they were raising funds, bit different back home with the Fire Service dead against Fireworks. I'll ... read more

Published: July 5th 2009North America » United States » California » Visalia4th July, 2009. Visalia, California. 4th July and it's "American Independence Day", this morning we headed out to Exceter, a small town 12 miles from here to welcome in the day. Exeter has a Pancake Breakfast, Market Day, Fun Run and tonight a Fireworks display, all to celebrate the day. Nice country town feeling, everyone friendly and a great breakfast - two pancakes, two sausages and coffee all for $5, a fund raiser for a local church group, the young ones served us at the table and were extremely pleasant. The Americans don't drink a lot of hot tea and when you ask for it they look at you as if you had just come from another planet, even in the Supermarkets you have to search for Tea bags, coffee is another story, you can take ... read more

Published: July 2nd 2009North America » United States » California » Visalia1st July, 2009. Visalia, California. Well, big effort this morning, we drove 40 miles down the road to Visalia, a town of about 120,000 and center of a big fruit growing and farming area. Californian Raisins are grown and processed nearby. More importantly to us it is close to Sequoia, and Kings national parks, Sequoia is the home of the giant Sequoia Trees which we plan to visit tomorrow. Today we booked into the local KOA (Kampgrounds of America), we have been booked in here for a while, this weekend is American Independence day (4th July) and most campgrounds get booked out, Friday is an official holiday so long weekend. Lots of Independence Day red/white and blue for sale in the shops and also now being decorated on homes, RV's and businesses. The people are pretty ... read more

Published: July 3rd 2009North America » United States » California » Visalia2nd July, 2009 Visalia, California. Sequoia National Park today, off early for the 57 mile run to the park. At about the 40 mile mark you enter the park, pay the fee $25 US (which of course we don't have to as we purchased a Parks pass all those months ago) and head up an 8% incline. Climbs about 5500 ft in 17 miles, the road has numerous 10mph hairpins and speed limit is 25mph, BUT nice road and great views. This is the home of the Giant Sequoia trees and first stop was the "Giant Forest" where we viewed numerous huge trees (and believe me they are huge). At Beetle Rock we saw one tree that has lost its top to lightning but the base is still 700 tonnes. A walk out to Sunset Point, ... read more
Zen and the Art of Weeding
Published: December 13th 2008North America » United States » California » VisaliaSixth stop: The arse end of nowhere AKA Exeter (Eastern California) Dodgy rating: some and some Crazy Count: A few goats Fun Rating: "Hmmmmm, kill weeds, I will" Yoda fun. Stay: 7th November - 20th November My time in San Francisco drew to a sad close and I prepared to exchange my hedonistic lifestyle for a few weeks of hard graft at my first WWOOFing placement at Harmony Hill (I hate to disappoint the lewd-minded friends of mine out there but I'm afraid WWOOFing is not a sexual term, it stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Slightly less exciting I know). I've often found that it's the people you meet along the way that add to your experience of a place and without even realising it Scott, Szonic and Corey had helped to make ... read more
We're not native drivers yet!
Published: November 8th 2007North America » United States » California » VisaliaWe left Silver Spur this morning and intended to get to Fresno in about three hours~~instead it took five and a half! Have I mentioned that there are a lot of people in California, and they all drive? Drive fast! We drove down highway 99, where they had the 100 car pileup last week. We weren’t sure exactly where it happened, but we came to one stretch, several miles long, that had a lot more trash on it than normal, and later we found out that’s where it occurred. It should have been obvious to us, because there was fabric, wood, tires, paper…just everything lining the fences. It made us feel bad that we’d joked about the Fine for Littering $1000 sign in the midst of the trash. We drove past miles and miles and miles ... read more
BREAKING NEWS: Laura Exists!
Published: July 14th 2007North America » United States » California » VisaliaIt seemed too good to be true. There was always a hint of the fairytale-Colin Frizzle ("and he's got a big...")-all a figment of Philip's imagination- about it. But yesterday (I am glad to announce) that I gained irresputable evidence that Laura Taylor, Californian beauty and apple of Philip's eye does, in fact, exist. I even shook her hand. Ok, so right now we're staying with Tim and Diana Mulick, who are friends of the Taylors in Woodlake and their adorably hyperactive boys: Jacob, Samuel and Thomas. Woodlake is not at all a tourist place - if it was, then believe me, the road signs need improvement! - so what we're getting here is a reallife slice of American family life. They live on a citrus ranch, about 22 acres of orange, lemon and olive groves. ... read more
Only three days left before we leave for our vacation/wedding/honeymoon. It is difficult trying to get everything done, as I still have school and my 2nd job teaching, and both of us are working. Luckily, we do not have a reception to worry about right now, in 2 weeks it will all be about the reception and planning our next vacation. Who knows where and when, we will have to wait to see if we want tropical or what, depends how much we like Belize and Guatemala. So much to do so little time. Can't wait for Friday and on our way, so I can be done with all of this stress. ... read more
