Four days to go. All the hotel reservations have been made. My dad's friend is ready to loan us his Chevy Traverse SUV. The family can hardly wait for Monday night. So let me tell you a little about the purpose of the trip. On June 5, 2017, I committed to Providence College to study for the next two years. Six weeks later, my family will have traveled to Rhode Island to visit the college and have a summer vacation in the small yet beautiful state of Rhode Island. We lift off from San Jose at 9:52pm on Monday night. My dad planned the whole trip for the family. Or, I should say, five-sevenths of it. My two older brothers, twenty-eight and twenty-five, are not coming. Who is coming are John (my dad), Shelly (my mom), ... read more

Today we have only 360 odd miles to get to Roshan's place. We set off after a leisurely breakfast at the Best Western in Barstow which claims to be on Historic Route 66 on it's sign. There have been a few places since our dinner at the Picket Fence Cafe that we have encountered Route 66. R has been talking about driving it from end to end sometime and got an idea of parts of it on this trip. We left the Mojave desert landscape and drove past orange, almond and pistachio groves, (both mature and newly planted), okra fields and grape vines. Saw a truck carrying open trailer bin of tomatoes. And drove by bare, dry fields with signs protesting the government's management of water. We can see the drought condition here, it's dry and ... read more

Nancy's Entry: Finally -- we woke up to sun today! We started the day by taking a drive along the coast now that we finally had nice weather to enjoy the views. I have had a phobia of riding in the car for as long as I can remember, and some things make it worse -- two lane roads and heights/cliffs are a couple of them, and add to that a tendency toward car sickness, and it was a recipe for a panic attack. After getting out of the car and relaxing for a bit, I was able to get back in and actually enjoy our drive along Highway 1. We drove to Bodega Bay, the location where Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" was filmed, and had a little coffee/breakfast with incredible ocean views. Then we went ... read more

Finally got to add to our travel blog - sorry but life has been a bit hectic. I started my new job at ShoreTel on Tuesday the 4th of January. All going well so far, but a lot to learn. There were 20 new starters at the orientation so business is doing well. One of them I met is also starting in Australia as the local trainer. The tech support guys here keep telling me how much they were hanging out for me to start in Australia so I am thinking there will be heaps of work there too. Glenda has managed to keep herself busy while I have been at work, treading the pavements and hopping on buses and trains to find local shopping centres. We caught the Caltrain up to San Francisco last Saturday ... read more

Had a very exciting New Years Eve, spent walking along the Las Vegas Strip, shoulder to shoulder, very crowded and cold......Countdown..... Fireworks........ Fantastic..!!! We met an Aussie couple in LA - Trisha and Peter - and met up with them again in Las Vegas and went to "Return of The Rat Pack" - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Joey Bishop, a really great show. (For our Dubbo friends, small world story, Trisha lives next to and teaches with Amanda Pilon in NT) Headed out of Vegas on the 2nd Jan, along with thousands of others, traffic was slow and some roads were closed due to the snow. It hadn't snowed in northern LA for 20 years. Stopped at Glendale for the night before heading up the west coast through Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, ... read more

October 10, 2009 Today was a day of rest and relaxation. You may wonder why four people who have been on an endless vacation would need rest…but the truth is that after days of 8-10 hours of driving, we are all exhausted. We’re staying at the Sheraton in Sunnyvale California which is about 40 miles south of San Francisco. We tried to position ourselves between San Fran and the coast of Big Sur. So today we slept late, ran a few errands and then lay in the sun by the pool. The temperature is in the 70’s. It was wonderful. We had a great dinner at the hotel restaurant and then …to bed. Today’s Road Lesson: Vacationing is hard work! ... read more
