We said a fond goodbye to Val and Garth on Saturday morning, after a run and swim (me) and a pancake breakfast fixed by Val... We drove on dozens of small roads and minor highways to get from Chico to Walnut Creek where we charged up the car. We passed lots more orchards and a few small towns before getting into the more populated areas outside of San Francisco. Traffic was light, and the weather beautiful: sunny and in the high 70s. At one point, we drove through mounded hills that looked like the Palouse in Eastern Washington. We arrived at Bill's cousin Lynn and her son Chris's place in San Jose a little after 3:00pm. Like all good projects there are intermediate milestones which lead to major milestones. Yesterday we hit a major milestone as we departed Ridgecrest and headed down US14 to Palmdale, caught CA138 and breezed across the Antelope Valley. That road took us to a sign that I have seen many, many times growing up in California but it was never been a major milestone until yesterday: US 5 North. From that turn on to 5 in Gorman it is 3,018 miles to Tok, Alaska but we have turned north and we are heading toward our next intermediate milestone, Oh Canada - Northbound, on schedule and just slightly over budget :-)...R&M... read more
