This entry comes first evening out at venice beach, typed verbatim from my travel journal. "I am finally out, by myself. At the moment my hopes are really low, and some brief encounters would prove for this journey to be a success. I am sitting on the beach at the moment, and its nice, breezy and quiet. Peaceful even. Flight was great. I was sitting next to a middle-aged actor (or so he claimed). Beau Baxter. He had apparently quit acting and was returning to LA for a week to sell his old beach house on Venice Beach. Before leaving home, my plan was to start exploring LA from hollywood, with a reservation in USA hostels, supposedly the best hostel in LA. He suggested I start things with venice, and offered a lift, since it was ... read more

As my departure date is almost 48 hours away and the preparation begins to slowly subside, my mind is filled with a range of emotions. Excitement...Nervousness...Joy...Sadness... However, I think all of these can be summed up into one word...ANTICIPATION. Anticipation of traveling an unknown continent by myself. Anticipation of the loneliness. Anticipation of adventure. Anticipation of any possible peril. Basically, Anticipation of the incredible journey that lies ahead! So, within 48 hours I will be embarking upon a (mostly) solo traverse of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Within the past week, not only 1, but 2 Adams have expressed interest in joining me in Colombia. Just today, I found out that I will once again be reunited on the backpack trail with Adam Cohen. Back in the dia (as Lauren would say), Adam, Jason, Donald, and I, ... read more

So one day I received an email from a good friend that suggested I enter a contest on an Australian website advertising the self-proclaimed "Best Job in the World". I thought it looked cool but it seemed a bit far-fetched. Besides, I pretty much already have that job making video games near the beach. :) Then I received 2 MORE emails sent from different friends suggesting the same thing. OK, maybe I will look into this a bit more. The job will award the winner a 6 month well paid "job" as the caretaker of an australian island on the Great Barrier Reef. Not bad. The method for application was creating a 1-minute video describing why you are the best candidate for the job. That sounded fun but I was in the middle of finishing a ... read more

I have arrived to live out my very own California dream! My boyfriend Nick and I have arrived in Venice Beach! I've heard about this place all my life through friends but never actually believed I'd be living here myself. The best thing about this trip so far is the way I actually feel like i live here. I love fitting in to the community, walking down to buy my coffee from the local coffee shop Groundworks and just feeling so happy like "i live here! I live here!" I smell the ocean every day, I run and put my feet in the sand and I gaze at the palm trees out my window and just feel so grateful. We came because I'm doing a yoga course and training to be an instructor back in England, ... read more

23rd April Well we can’t believe it’s finally happened - we’ve run out of time and places to go and we have to go home - at least for a while! We’ve had yet another wonderful time in LA. It’s been especially great to be able to spend time with Dan and Liz. We were invited by Liz’s family to an Easter Sunday dinner and met lots of new people. We were straight off the plane from Roratonga, so weren’t terribly with it but it didn’t seem to matter, we were made very welcome by everyone. We went to a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA. We saw the final concert conducted by Essa-Pekka Salonen who has been the Music Director for the LA Phil for 17 years. It was Stravinsky’s Oedipus ... read more

I’m doing it! Can’t think of any reason why not to… 1-2 months traveling throughout Columbia, Ecuador & Peru. This must be the place where I can document my thoughts err ramblings and other words of wisdom I may conjure while on the “gringo trail.” I’ll update as more thought and planning occurs… ... read more

Well after our good intentions of staying awake longer to counteract the time difference and ease jet lag, we find ourselves awake at 4.30am on Fri morning and starving. So what do I do?? I phone my mum to tell her we've got here safely and it's gorgoeus weather! Then attempted to doze before having a shower and sampling the breakfast (which luckily starts at 6.30). Breakfast includes toast, bagels, home made waffles with syrup, cereal, fruit and muffins as well as coffee, juice and milk. I'm impressed again and we stuff our faces before stealing some blueberry muffins and head on back to our room - we've also got a list of leaflets for "attractions" to go and see. These include Sea World and the Zoo, both in San Diego (where we will be going ... read more
