Summer seems to dictate lighter, fruitier wines and soft drinks. Consider these: Unless you're swimming in the stuff, skip the Champagne for casual outdoor occasions and opt for Spanish Cava to pass around as your guests arrive and the coals heat up. It is much less expensive, and after the first glass, nobody cares! Cava is commonly made following the same method as its expensive French relative, yet with local grapes and a wider range of prices. It's hard not to feel relaxed and ready to sit back and enjoy a hearty meal of grilled meats and sides when you have a chilled glass of bubbles in hand. Plus, if you get a few extra bottles you'll find that the crisp mousse is a fine pairing for your spread. Totus Tuus Cava reserva, named for the ... read more

Have you heard of Spanish Priorat wine? During the Middle Ages, as the story goes, a villager had a vision of angels ascending and descending a stairway to heaven in the region. The next year, King Alfonso II of Aragón founded a small town and Carthusian monastery on the spot. The monastery became known as La Cartoixa, (Catalan for “charterhouse,” another name for a Carthusian monastery) and the town, Scala Dei (“God’s stairway”). Given the important presence of the monks, the region came to be known as Priorato, from the Spanish word for “priory.” Today, although the monastery has been long abandoned, the little hamlet nearby is still known as Scala Dei, and one of the oldest and best wineries in the region—Cellers de ... read more

I found this article in Winespeed to be quite insightful: When phylloxera destroyed most of the vineyards of Europe plus many in the Americas in the late 1800s, Australia was largely spared. One of the lucky legacies is that Australia now possesses many of the oldest vineyards in the world. In the Hunter Valley, for example, the Stevens Vineyard, now owned by Tyrrell’s, includes an “Old Patch” of chardonnay, semillon, and shiraz planted in 1867. Similarly, in the Barossa, the Hewitson family owns the Old Garden Vineyard which contains the world’s oldest mourvèdre, planted in 1853. Also in the Barossa, Penfold’s famous Kalimna “Block 42” of cabernet sauvignon planted in 1888 is thought to be the oldest cabernet sauvignon on the planet. Indeed, although definitive records do not exist, the Old Patch vines are thought to ... read more

Did I misspell "facts" or ?? No, I wanted to use some alliteration. But since you love my wine facts, here are some more for you to sip on. Sixty percent of Napa Valley wineries require an appointment to visit them, versus 20% which are open to the public. Other regions of California are less restrictive: 5% of Santa Cruz and Monterey wineries require an appointment; fewer than 10% of Santa Barbara; and 30% of Sonoma County. I think that is totally ridiculous. But a man in the know told me the reason why. To address the number of drunk drivers on the road up and down the Napa Valley. Good reason, I say, especially when I am on a bicycle!!! The German wine harvest will begin 21 days EARLY, making the 2018 harvest the earliest ... read more

Many of you know I was stuck in Lodi one summer, back in 1968. I went to summer school, worked, and played baseball for the local Lodi nine. I never knew much about the town, except for some of the players who grew up there. I also knew they produced huge amounts of wine, mostly on the less expensive side, the type that us college students could afford. Then along came the Fogartys, and Credence Clearwater Revival. Yes!!! I was stuck in Lodi that summer, but had a great time. Now after almost 50 years, things have changed. I am now a cyclist, no more baseball. And Lodi's grapes are producing some award winning wines. We plan to do both, cycle, and taste wine today, with a designated driver, of course. We have cycled Monterey and ... read more

In September 2011 we went on a road trip, planning to stop at interesting places along the way. One very interesting spot was the city of Lodi in California. "Just about a year ago, I set out on the road... Seekin' my fame and fortune... lookin' for a pot of gold... Things got bad, and things got worse... I guess you will know the tune... Oh Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again" For those of you who are not familiar with this song, it was made popular in the 1970's by a rock band called Creedence Clearwater Revival (who also happens to be one of my all time favorite groups). After hearing this song many times on the radio back home in Yangon, Myanmar (known as Rangoon, Burma at that time) I have always wanted to ... read more

Geo: 38.1301, -121.276This morning, we woke to temperatures in the low 30s. Fortunately, we bought fleece sleeping bag liners at the camp store because the campground had no electricity (most in National Parks don't) and we were not prepared for weather that cold. We drove from 8000 feet to 4000 feet in Yosemite Valley and the temperature change was significant. It was in the 70's in the Valley. There is also a huge difference in the "feel" between the higher sections and the Valley. The Valley is a lot more commercial, and a lot more people. But, the scenery is insane. Most of the famous Ansel Adams shots are from the Valley. We left the crowds around 1:30 and headed towards San Francisco. We drove about 3 hours on beautiful roads, but ended up staying in Lodi, ... read more

Carla: After leaving Lake Mead we drove north through the Nevada Desert, skirting the outer edge of Las Vegas. There are lots of words you can use to describe the desert here but one that springs to mind immediately is 'empty'. Its very very very empty indeed. The road stretches ahead shimmering into the distance in perfect straight lines. We drove for 6 hours and for 400 miles from Las Vegas to Reno and only saw trees on the last 20 miles as we entered Fallon a town who's tag line was “Nevada's little Oasis”. However that didn't mean that you could describe the desert as boring. There are lots of brown hills, brown rocks, brown and orange scrub and then surprising amounts of other colours from time to time. Flowering cacti provide yellow, pink and ... read more

Hello from the road, friends and family. We left the homestead on Wednesday morning and made a hard day’s drive to Sutherlin, Oregon. We arrived with only diesel fumes in the tank, and filled up our 30 gallon tank with 30.1 gallons of fuel. Close shave. We spent the night at Highway Haven with a PassPort American discount of 50% Thursday, we drove through the mountain regions of southern Oregon and northern California. We arrived at Mountain Gate RV Park north of Redding, just in time to sign up for a turkey dinner, with all the sides. Today, we drove south on I 5 to Flag City RV Resort which is just east of Lodi CA. As is our practice, after three days of driving the rig, we stop for two nights wherever we land. So, ... read more
