I have finally put some photos online. By far the most interesting aspect of rambling around on a bike is riding into towns. Inevitably I've spent a great deal of time in the wilds, at least a few days, and generally I'm in need of a very specific set of things: a shower, a real full meal, water. That about rounds it out. Very simple. And so it was today when I rolled into the desert outpost of Baker, California. What kind of town is Baker? What is the story here? What am I doing here, or rather what am I going to do here for a day and a half? These are the things that course through my mind when approaching a town. ... read more

The third and final day of the Seattle-LA run dawned clear and warm. The overnight low in Death Valley was 66F. Watching the dawn with coffee and granola bar began a relaxed morning. Struck camp and rolled out about 0900, headed for LA. The route ran South out of Furnace Creek, a side loop around Artist's Drive, and along Badwater Basin. A nice surprise for those who love twisty roads, the Badwater Road South out of Death Valley follows the East margin of the valley, along the foot of the Amargosa Range. A steady series of alluvial fans running out from gullies in the eastern slope are hugged by the roadbed, keeping the grade out of the playa valley bottom. These fans are frequent and the road was a blast, despite the marginal surface. After ... read more

Back in California! Okay, I didn't post yesterday. I was just too beat and feeling really weird, so I skipped it. So this is two days' worth. Wednesday morning got up kinda late (no surprise) and left Amarillo, Texas. Stopped off to check out the 72 ounce steak. The deal with this thing is that if you can eat it in an hour, it's free. It's a LOT of meat. You have to eat it at a special table in front of everyone at the restaurant and they have a timer by you and even a little barf bucket...you know, just in case. The last person to do it was a 120 pound woman! Nice! The Weather Channel was predicting that this was going to be a bad driving day for me. All I saw along ... read more

Day 8! I apologize for not having this up last night. We finally got into a hotel around 11 California time, about 1am STL time. So we had a really big day today! We left William bright and almost early this morning, and drove to Seligman, AZ. Seligman takes their Route 66 heritage seriously, and you can tell from the Snow Cap. The Snow Cap is sort of like a diner, it serves burgers and malts, but it is all outdoor seating. . After Seligman we drove through Peach Springs, home of the Grand Canyon Caverns. We stopped there but we didnt go down in the caverns. After that, we headed for Valentine, AZ. There a brand new wildlife refuge was built, called Keepers of the Wild, which is now open to the public. We ... read more

Left Vegas after that and we spent last night in Barstow, a little town with the distinction of having once been the number 1 meth producer in the USA (according to the nice young man I met at the motel after hours window who was “going out to get drunk”)! Left Barstow the next morning, and thank goodness we saw a Starbucks. The coffee you get at motels etc is crap. We had McDonalds for breakfast, so we now know what biscuits and McGriddles are. The Americans really do have a sweet tooth. ... read more

I usually go to Las Vegas at least once a year. Mainly to attend conferences or trade shows such as NAB (National Association of Broadcasters). And everytime, I've driven from LA to Vegas, on the 15 freeway, I would see signs for Peggy Sue's 50's Diner. I assumed the I followed the freeway signs and ate at Peggy Sue's Diner but after paying the bill, I noticed the receipt said "Penny's Diner". Darn, next time I'll make sure it's Peggy Sue's! In any case, the food was reasonably priced "comfort" food. Meaning it'll make you FAT if you eat there every day.... read more
