Pickled Fish for Breakfast Up early again (6:00am), quick shower, dress, pack, and downstairs for the complementry breakfast. And what a breakfast! All manner of cold sliced meats & cheese, a selection of cereals & juice, and (now I know that I'm in Germany) pickled herrings! Kate looked over her toast & nuttela with distain at my plate of manufactured meat, cheese, & pickled fish! When in Rome I say... Fast Train to Munich We go straight to the station and ask for the next fast (250 km/h) train to Munchen (Munich) and were told to go to platform 8 at 8:50. Change trains at Manheim. Too easy! On the train and we eventually decode the First Class/ Second Class, Smoking/Non-smoking (the Germans LOVE to smoke!). Much to Kate's excitement work out that we have 1st ... read more
Mid Atlantic. Not sleeping very well even with two seats, but at least we have plenty of room this time. Breakfast not a moment too early, but again Kate's lactose free meal is better... I think I've got to come up with a better dietary requirement. Low carb just isn't getting me anywhere. ~ an hour to land there is no avoiding it, I'm going to have to do battle with my mortal enemy - the aircraft toilet. Yet again the toilet wins 8-( Arr. Frankfurt Main. Landed in short order, through customs in minutes and then to collect our bags. A short wait (OK a long one) then into the main terminal. Now what? Umm straight to Munich or stay in Frankfurt tonight? We take a vote on it and both decide that exhaustion is ... read more
FRESNO. I complete my fast food tour with a 'massive meat sandwich' breakfast from Burger King. - Fantastic! I am sure that the reason for the 'obesity' epedemic is the availability, abundance, and low cost (relatively) of the fast food restaurants. They are everywhere and they are cheap, but most importantly - you don't have to tip! Starbucks for coffee again as we have given up looking for anywhere else (it just leads to disappointment) and when we explained to the young girl at the register where we were from and where we were going, she asked (with the most bewildered look on her face) 'What made you come to Fresno?' (even the locals dont see the reason to visit, it seems). We explained that we were driving from Yosemite to LA and ran out of ... read more
Up as early as we could manage (~6.00 am) and hit the road (~8.00 am) to head north over Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods the first stop of the day. We took the wrong exit (again) and got off early (will get the hang of the system eventually). Once off the highway the drive to Muir Woods was VERY nice! (with the top down of course) and the trees were SPECTACULAR! A coffee and a (very) salty pretzel and back on the road . . . So what do you have for lunch when time is short and you're racing the sun to Yosemite National Park? All you can eat ribs of course! I only managed four ribs as I was trying not to be a glutten, besides I had a long drive still ahead. ... read more
