THE JUAN MARISCHAL HIGH LEG KICK Juan Marischal pitched for the Giants back in the 50’s and 60’s. He had a devastating fastball the leverage for which he derived from a unique high leg kick delivery. He was awesome to watch and it wasn’t long before kids all over the country were trying to copy his throwing style. Problem was he had control of it and we kids didn’t. Young batters from all over the place were dropping like flies there for a while, some of them were hurt, and I was, of course, right in the middle of it. In 1958 I was 9 years old, going on 10, and just enthralled with baseball. The Dodgers and Giants had just moved to California from New York. I had just come from ... read more

OLD JOE Not much is known about Henry Wise except that he was down on his luck and needed a road stake to find greener pastures somewhere outside of Placer County. Before he left town it was found to be expedient for him to murder Old Joe. After he left town he was seen nevermore again in the vicinity of Auburn for Old Joe’s friends would surely have lynched him. Old Joe plodded steadily along through his life, working hard and making friends wherever he went; until he met Henry Wise on July 3, 1901. The stagecoach road between Auburn and Foresthill first dropped in to the American River Canyon and then traversed the divide between the north and middle forks of the river as it ascended the other side toward Foresthill. In both ... read more

EUGENE BLAIR Eugene Blair died peacefully in his sleep on June 27, 1884 and lies at eternal rest in the cemetery at Auburn, CA. His grave is about 300 yards to the south of the grave occupied with the remains of Grampa Glen Oliver. It gives us the weakest sort of connection to the first man ever pensioned out by the Wells Fargo Express Company. When he went into retirement Eugene was 32 years old. When he died Wells Fargo paid all funeral expenses including a fine granite headstone. In his day nobody ever thought he might die peacefully in his sleep. He was among the most feared and respected shotgun messengers that Wells Fargo had. He was such a fierce defender of the strongbox that highwaymen began attacking the coaches he was guarding ... read more

A TALE OF JUSCTICE IN PLACER COUNTY By 1881 the big nuggets had about played out and gold prospecting had become hard work. Ed Steinigal and his pal, George Shinn, decided to give it up and rob a train instead. Ruben Rogers, Henry Frazier, and John Mason agreed to help them. On August 31 they set their plan in motion. A rail was loosened and sure enough they crashed the Eastbound Number 1 at Cape Horn, but by the time the train had arrived they were too drunk to rob it. Frazier mistook some approaching passengers for soldiers and the robbers all fled empty handed into the night. The trail of clues led officers to Mason; he was arrested on September 9, and quickly rolled over on the others. They all lawyered ... read more

Fast Fridays was great. The people were so enthusiastic and wanted to know lots of info about the bikes. I would think a few are going to build some of these style of frames. Big night afterwards, rolling on top of really late nights and 4:30 starts, we are starting to get tired. The countryside up here is beautiful. Lots of pine trees and some grass. Not like LA. On the way to San Francisco, Joe took us to one of his friends who is a stunt man and racer of flat trackers ( Gary Davis). He was the stunt man who worked with Evil Kinevil. This museum at hisplace was mad. Heaps of bikes ,even a Crump solo was there. This place was all the fellas dreams. He even had a trackI with a magnificent ... read more

Over the last couple of days, it has been hectic. Firstly, we all went to Universal Studios on Tuesday. It was packed, but we all managed to stay together and everyone went on the rides together. The line ups, although long seemed to be enjoyable, with the Bogans making themselves seen and heard. The new Transformer ride is really good and there were heaps of things to see and do. The next day was the 4th July and after the boys washed the bikes at Joes, we drove down to San Diego Sea World. We got these City Passes which includes 3 days at Disney, Universal and San Diego for 279 which has worked out really well. The whales at Sea World were incredible, although their dorsal fins are so curled over, they would never allow whales ... read more

Today is another day to not do very much. I’m still recovering from Burning Man, although most of the physical exhaustion has disappeared by this point. Good thing, because I have some long hikes coming up. The Christmas Tree Vineyard Lodge is a great place to relax. It’s an oversize log cabin personally built by the owner. They have pictures of the build in the living room. Eventually, I needed to do laundry and get dinner, so I headed into Foresthill. Both town and lodge are located on a high ridge between the Middle and North Forks of the American River. At one point, the road passes an overlook with a beautiful view of the Middle Fork canyon with the Sierras stretching beyond. Foresthill was url=http://mmoffet.mystarband.net/towns.... read more

Today, I’m rafting another river. Unlike the tricky rivers earlier in this trip (see ) I chose an easier one this time. I want to relax. I booked a trip on the South Fork of the American, the most popular raft trip in California. The river contains only class II and III rapids, so it’s safe for people with no previous experience. It’s also easily accessible, a mere hour and a half from San Francisco. An astonishing twenty three companies have commercial permits for this river, and every one sells out their trips on summer weekends. Battle for the Upper Stanislaus Any rafter on the American River (all forks) needs to take a few minutes to honor the upper Stanislaus, the river I mentioned at the New Melones Reservoir yesterday. Even t... read more

24th June, 2009. Auburn, California. Driving home this evening the temperature was still 94 degrees (32C), cooling down from a very nice day. Heard on the radio that we can look forward to three digit temperatures over the weekend, personally I am not looking forward to getting my Butt cooked off, but we have found an RV park with a pool in Reno so that should help. Today was a bit of a catch up and time out at the pool so not much to report. Went into Old Town Auburn and had a look around, an historic area that has been preserved for all time, lots of restaurants and nick nack shops. Had dinner at KFC - had a bit of a craving, have been away from it for two years now. Garth, there are ... read more
