Bekki’s parents were at Nate and Bekki’s house prior to our arrival. We always enjoy meeting up with Alan and Julie (Bekki’s parents) as they are really nice and we have much in common, so we were happy to see them. Bekki had work lined up for all of us parents to do but, as we tell our children regularly, “we are not paid to think and we do only what is good enough for government work”. Our kids knew what to expect from us! Our job was to harvest the corn. This was not just any corn, but rather corn to be ground into a flour, it is dried on the stock. We left for Nate’s on Monday, this grandkids trip different as we started out by ourselves. A little piece and quiet before the gang of grandkids. We helped Nate and Bekki can apricots, babysit kids, clean and ready for friends. Dale worked with Nate on repairing a piece of equipment, something he loves to do. Unfortunately, there was no time for a backpacking trip. Prior to leaving home, I’d asked Bekki if she had basil, she answered that she had lots. I brought my Cuisinart so that I could make Pesto for us. Well, Bekki had basil, lots of basil, probably 20 plants, loaded with leaves. On Wednesday Bekki and I picked basil, filling 2 baskets. 19 May 2010 Red Bluff, California: A Leisurely morning in Alturas was a vacation-paced pleasure. In hindsight, an early start would have provided dry roads, as the sunshine receded downwind and an ominous wall of gray greeted departure. A lengthy consideration of weather and riding options led to the decision to head WSW past Red Bluff and stage for a Thursday ride of Highway 3. Thursday's forecast was the driest of the week and Hwy 3 is one of Northern California's finer back roads. A campground outside Platina, CA was the destination. A kind word for California is in order: 65mph speed limits on many rural roads, and drivers who pull over when they see you want to pass. What an f-ing revelation!
