Just across the Arizona border from California on I-10 is the desert oasis of Quartzite. At first glance, it is the kind of place Melisse and I would tend to run screaming from. That is because Quartzite, Arizona is Shangri-la for the R-V set. Fortunately, we did not flee but, rather, this time through, hung out and poked around to see what it had to offer. When we came through last month we just stopped in long enough to get water, some groceries and spot a Delaware license plate (a travel game we play is to spot a license plate from each state-Delaware made #50, first time ever). Our investigation of Quartzite led us to the Fagowee eatery where we were enticed by the proprietor to stop in for a lunch of boiled cod with all ... read more

By Melisse. Part of the fun of traveling is eating foods that are special to the area you are experiencing. The southwest deserts of Arizona and California, where we’ve been for the past weeks offer some wonderful flavors. As many of you may know, when camping almost any basic food tastes good. The dinners we’ve been cooking are way more than that. They are superbly delicious. In the small towns down here there are no supermarket chains, but rather local groceries. We’ve been fine dining on the finds from such a store all week. We’ve been making dishes we’d be glad to pay a pretty penny for in a fine restaurant. We’ve been enjoying various combinations of the following ingredients: Sautéed ……. fresh roasted poblano peppers (purchased already roasted) offers a slightly smokey slightly hot flavor ... read more

It is going to be difficult for me to explain what the experience of Quartzsite is like. Quartzsite's name is pretty self explanitory. Still in the Sonoran Desert which, from what I have read, was created millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions, Quartzsite is arid, generally flat desert that is sprinkled with quartz. Everywhere you look. No one even bothers picking it up except the tourists. During the hot summer months the temperature here can reach 120⁰F and the population dwindles to about 3,000 heat tolerant inhabitants. However, during December and January the average daily temperature is a very comfortable 65⁰F and the population soars to 1.5 million folks; mostly RVers. The big draw apart from the dry desert heat is the availability of free camping on Bureau of Land Management, the nine major gem ... read more

High temperatures have prompted authorities to issue warnings stating that activity anytime other than the early morning hours could be dangerous. You know, I thought we were really going to enjoy this break from the open road, lounging around in a temperature controlled environment but claustrophobia is quickly setting it. Temperatures here reached up to 116F (47C) yesterday and have reached record highs throughout the southwest. Not quite hot enough to fry an egg (yes, we tried) but pretty darn close. What a perfect summer for a cross-country road trip—record gasoline prices and record heat waves! Talk about good timing. Last we wrote we were waking up in the cool, shady groves of San Juan National Forest. Originally we were going to spend some time down around the four-corners area, but as the landscape rolled on ... read more
