Cold morning, had all my clothes on, T shirt, then bike shirt, then winter jacket, then wind/rain jacket. Stayed in this gear all day. Mildly warm when climbing a few hills. Canadians/Americans/Germans all thought it was mild!! Decided I much prefer the warmer climes. Walking on Alaska's largest accessible glacier! Wow breathtaking! The Matanuska is a stunning valley glacier 24 miles (38.62Km) long and 4 miles (6.43Km) wide and descends 12 000ft (3.65Km) to the end. It wasn't as cold as we expected it to be- thankfully! It also turned out to be THE perfect day to go out on the glacier as the days before and after it was either cloudy, rainy or foggy and in either of these cases they close access to the glacier. We looked a little "unprepared" in our "town" clothes! Crocks and jeans! compared to all the other serious walkers with helmets and ice spike shoes! I should tell you my moose-hunting story: when the kids were around 10-12 (Christy didn’t go with us) we went to Michigan to join my brother Dick and Susan for a road trip ... read more

AUGUST 30 - MONDAY … what a full day … marilyn spotted three moose … two beautiful red foxes tried to cross the road in front of us, turned back and climbed the bank and sat there expecting us to take their pictures … sorry no pictures from me tonight … just too tired … oh yes, and we saw the most dramatic rainbows … one after the other as there were rain showers then sunlight and back to rain showers … … marilyn and i traveled up the matanuska valley and stopped at the matanuska glacier - a 24 mile long glacier flowing at the rate of one foot a day down the valley … the glacier starts high up in a ice field, tumbles down into a valley and then pushes itself down the ... read more
