Walking on Alaska's largest accessible glacier! Wow breathtaking! The Matanuska is a stunning valley glacier 24 miles (38.62Km) long and 4 miles (6.43Km) wide and descends 12 000ft (3.65Km) to the end. It wasn't as cold as we expected it to be- thankfully! It also turned out to be THE perfect day to go out on the glacier as the days before and after it was either cloudy, rainy or foggy and in either of these cases they close access to the glacier.
We looked a little "unprepared" in our "town" clothes! Crocks and jeans! compared to all the other serious walkers with helmets and ice spike shoes! They were SO geared up in ice-wear that they couldn't even move and here we came along and casually walked around on top of the glacier!
It's a magnificent sight - the pictures just can not bring to life what we experieced there, the thin clean air refreshing our lungs with every breath and drinking the running water - from the melted glacier...ooooh! Nothing bottled tastes this good! I wish all of you could eperience it!
Further down from the glacier- where it turns into a fast flowing river
they have river rafting, graded class 3 rapids - but we werent in the mood to get wet...or drown for that matter!
