August 1 – 6, 2011 FAIRBANKS It felt good to be able to park the RV for several nights and not have to hook up each morning and move on!! Our time here in Fairbanks took in many of the special places to visit in the area so we will simply highlight the places we visited and let the pictures do the rest. North Pole, AK North Pole is known as the home of Santa Claus and his workshop. In December many letters arrive at the post office addressed to Santa. School children and senior citizens all take part in answering these letters. Here we enjoyed dinner together at the Elf’s Inn and then went across the road to visit the Santa Claus House and Santa’s reindeer. The North Pole Visitors Information Center was a very ... read more

July 11, 2011 Wal-Mart parking lot, Fairbanks Starting mileage for today is 11484 on a sunny morning at 66 degrees. Got started at 9:30. Drove back across the expressway to the McDonald’s to finish posting the blog. Once that was completed, we drove the 11 miles down the Richardson Highway to the North Pole. Thought from the ads that this community was going to be a big deal and I wanted to shop a bit. Turned out to be one building with Santa inside and lots of Christmas stuff you can get in any Christmas store in the lower 48. Heading now for Delta Junction that is the end of the Al-Can Highway. Several weeks ago, we had turned off at Tok and headed south toward Anchorage before completing this piece of highway. When we reached ... read more

Thursday, July 7th Chena State Park, Fairbanks 68 degrees and sunny. Starting mileage 10960 Talking with several RTers this morning, convinced us to tag along on their journey up the Elliott and then Dalton Highways toward Prudhoe Bay going as far as the Arctic Circle about 115 miles beyond Livengood. They were leaving camp at 10:30, but we told them we had things to do and would catch up to them. Got fresh water back at Pioneer Park as we couldn’t get close enough to the water faucet at the State Park. Checked our e-mail while we were there. We then headed north out of Fairbanks on the Elliott Highway that was mostly paved and followed the Alaskan oil pipeline for the 84 miles up to the community of Livengood where the two highways split. Wednesday, July 6th starting mileage is 10947 64 degrees. Pioneer Park, Fairbanks Had a big breakfast with Roger from New York, who was traveling by himself, and John who lives with his wife in Florida . Both rigs were on their way out of town that day. We then went next door to the Mickey’Ds to send off the blog entry. Valerie went inside as the signal wasn’t strong enough to upload the pics. I could get my e-mail sitting beside the restaurant in Rosie II. Drove a mile or so to the Chena River where the Riverboat Discovery was docked to take a three and a half hour cruise. The family that owns this enterprise is the 5th generation to operate steamboats. The first and second generations were riverboat pilots that operated freight vessels up ... read more

Postscript to Saturday’s entry. We had dinner Saturday night at an all-you-can-eat, salmon, prime rib and snow crab legs place that occupied a corner of Pioneer Park. It wasn’t that great for the price we paid, and that is why I most likely forgot it. The place was set up for tour buses to bring in hordes of people and since they were not there at this time, we could go right through the serving line. We did find a couple of RTers inside and joined them for dinner. That was pleasant. Sunday July 3rd through Monday, July 5th Pioneer Park, Fairbanks Alaska; Fair and 57 degrees. Starting mileage 10925. Started the day by driving to Creamer’s Field that is now a 2000 acre Migratory Waterfowl Refuge. Prior to 1966, this was a dairy farm started ... read more

In the morning it was off to a working gold mine, the El Dorado for a tour and some more gold panning. Everyone was guaranteed to find gold (if you didn’t find at least 8 flakes they gave you some). Tony found the most in his pay dirt but I only found a small amount. We combined our huge find and took it to the weigh station for valuation. Our combined gold totalled $17.50 - WOW that should help with the retirement funds....hehehe. I gathered the flakes and had them mounted inside a gold locket on sale for $59 – I’m sure they make a lot more money from this than from any gold they find at this mine. There was a gold nugget on display (I forget what it weighed) that was valued at $60,000 ... read more

After finishing our first year of teaching, Katherine and I packed our bags and headed off to America's last fronteir. We were going to visit Gwen and her husband, Tony in Fairbanks. The first several days we spent at their house, catching up and visiting local attractions such as Pioneer Park, North Pole, AK, and downtown Fairbanks. Pioneer is touted as Alaska's only historic themepark. It has no entry fee and it has several museums as well as lots of outdoor space for children to play. It is a good place to learn some Alaskan history. Another great place to learn about Alaksa is the Fairbanks vistor center in downtown Fairbanks. There isn't too much in downtown other than a few shops and restaurants but the Fudge Pot is a must taste stop. It specializes in ... read more

We are headed to Fairbanks, which will be our most Northly point on this adventure. We saw a distance sign on the road that told us Fairbanks is 946 kms North. That's a long way north!!! While we were in Dawson City, we went to the Vistor Information Centre and picked up these Yukon passports. The idea is ... read more

Today was the trip to above the Arctic Circle!! A trip I have been wanting to make since I was in Alaska when in the Air Force. Had an opportunity then to go above the Arctic Circle, but could not make the trip then. We traveled the Dalton Highway, also known as "The Haul Road". This is the road featured in "Ice Road Truckers". Much of the road I recognized from the show without the ice and sneaux :-). This was around a 400 mile round trip from North Pole, AK. The road was rough, but found it to be not as bad as others had said. No windshield dings, no flat tires, no major issues. There were a lot of frost heaves, gravel, and clay/dirt stretches. The bridge over the Yukon River was very interesting. ... read more
