Today was a long, marvelous, busy day.It started with breakfast in the "lodge". It was better than just a continental breakfast, and the "lodge" actually had moose antlers over a stone fireplace. Then, we decided that since it wasn't raining and there weren't too many clouds, we'd drive back up the park road and try to get a glimpse of Denali. We got lucky! Only 30% of visitors get to see it because it is only "out", as in not enshrouded with clouds, about 10% of the time! We took pictures of snow-covered mountains nearby. Then, in the right spot to be able to see the mountain, we thought we saw a peak that was not a cloud. We got out the binoculars and there it was! The pictures make it look like it's floating. We ... read more

We loaded up and headed to North Pole today. On the way we did see another moose and red fox. Both were on the move and did not take the time to pose for a photo. We stopped at the Delta Meat Market and sampled elk sausage, buffalo sausage, and other. We bought some ground buffalo to make some "finger food" one night. We stopped in Delta Junction, the northern end of the Alcan Highway for some photo's. Arrived at SantaLand RV Park in North Pole. Really enjoy this park, it has a Santa theme complete with a HUGE Santa at the front, each street name after reindeer, each hookup has a sneauxman, elves abound around the park, and the trees are trimmed with lights. The park is next door to Santa's summer home here in ... read more

The end of Day One in Fairbanks was pretty sweet. The first few lectures were kind of dry and I was a little excited to get out of that lecture room during the break. But at the break, I started up a conversation with a new UAA professor who interestingly enough just moved up from Moscow, Idaho. It's a small world! She got her Ph.D at the UofI and just got hired on at UAA last August and will actually be going to Moscow this weekend to get married by Coeur d'Alene. She was a pretty nice lady and I ended up chatting with her more by the end of the night. I saw a few more people I knew then took off to the Housing Building down the road to check in. The halls are ... read more

*** UPDATE 30/5/10 *** Just to let you know that our email problems have now been resolved, and so our Slingshot email addresses are OK to use again. It looks like any emails sent to us after Sunday 23rd May have probably been lost down a black hole at Slingshot, so if you sent anything to us in that time we would appreciate it if you could re-send if possible. Thanks Darryl Hi everyone, We have been having some email and internet problems for the last week, and it turns out that Slingshot decided to cancel our account because we put our tolls on hold while overseas. Its becoming a mission to sort out, as the other night I was on hold for over 30 minutes (calling NZ from Alaska!) and part way through the conversation ... read more

So it's only about 12:10 but already today, I feel like I should write an update. Also, I'm kind of bored and sitting in this huge ass lecture hall by myself. waiting for the days talks to start. You read the title correct -- I am in Fairbanks! After spending a little too late last night reviewing my knowledge of fish anatomy (hehe...totally worth it), I awoke with sleepy eyes as I punched my cell phone with my palm, the alarm stirring me at 5:45a.m. What cruel joke is it to arise at this hour? Nevertheless, I pried myself from my warm sheets and spent the next 45 minutes running around my room, trying to remember what to pack, what to take. In the end, I ended up with half my hiking bag full of two ... read more

Reluctantly we leave Dawson - we really felt comfortable there, but its time to move on to Alaska. Traversing the ‘Top of the World Highway’ we travel up to a fairly high altitude, and the road seems to just follow along the upper ridgeline from one peak to another. The views are astounding, and photos don’t seem to do it justice. The roads only being open for the summer for a week, and it seems to need a bit of work in places - but it is worth the bumpy ride! There is hardly any other traffic on the road, and its quite barren and there seems to be no wildlife as such. As we are travelling into America now, we have our first experience with an American Border Security agent. They don’t seem to have ... read more

In the car to Fairbanks Early Monday morning, we packed up the car & head north up the Parks Hiway to Fairbanks, Alaska. Snow capped mountains & frost covered trees lined the roadway as we gained higher ground and cooler temperatures. Just outside of Denali Park, the GPS soon reported single digits - 9 degrees! Yikes! (Can you hear Kathy saying "yeah!"???) After 4 + hours of driving, nature called to fill our bellies & empty our bladders. (Hmmm, was there a roadside squat?? We'll never tell!) A roadside Grill provided yummy burgers for all!! Soon we were back on the road and making tire tracks to Fairbanks. Sadly, there were no real wild-life sightings other than a LARGE Raven or two, but that didn't discourage us from enjoying the gorgeous scenery. Our agenda included a ... read more

Christmas Eve was lovely once again. We headed out to do shopping and then dinner at the Asian Bistro for our traditional Chinese dinner. Hunan beef, steamed chicken and vegetables, garlic chicken shrimp and lobster sauce and a Thai curry. Yummy! Leftovers for the next day, well the day after Christmas. Getting home, Jim, Frankie and Mark headed out to find a tree after measuring the height in the bay window. Sure glad I had my knitting measuring tape handy! It did not take long for them to find the perfect tree and then we got to the business of decorating. It is always fun to see the same ornaments year after year and talk about them. Christmas day: spent all day smelling the wonderful smells of turkey roasting, yams/sweet potatoes and one baked white potato...though ... read more

Spent the day yesterday puttering around getting ready to drive to Fairbanks when Mark got home. We got on the road by 4:30PM in rather poor weather. Rain and we just washed the Element! Visibility was so-so and just past Wasilla we stopped to wash the windows and headlights. Did that a few times. By the time we got to Talkeetna the roads dried up and stayed dry till we pulled into Fairbanks by midnight. The only wildlife we saw was a lone red fox who was trying to cross the road in front of us but thought better of it and went back into the woods instead of becoming a hood ornament. Woke up around 9:30am, after chatting a bit went back to bed. Missed the sunrise at 10ish, now we are drinking coffee, talking ... read more

We're Almost Off! Home Base, Alaska - So we leave in 12 days to Saigon and the rest of Southeast Asia and we've got everything we think we need at this point. The backpacks came in last week, as did my uber-dorky secure fanny pack (to carry both of our passports, cards, handguns, etc.) The fact that we're embarking on this rather extended vacation to the far east is becoming more real everyday. Char and I have both been taking turns worrying and stressing out about every possible element to the trip, thanks in no small part to her penchant for "listifying" every said element to the trip. That said, due to her obsessive diligence, I take great comfort in knowing that by packing our own corner grocery, we'd be spared the inconvenience of stocking up ... read more
