Oaxaca City. I was DONE with Mexcio City. I admit to feeling isolated and I just don´t really enjoy looking at museums, galleries and the urban sprawl totally got to me. My original plan was to head from MC north to the cultural cities of SanMiguelDeAllende and then the silver mines at Zacatas which was 7hrs bus ride but...well...I felt I should go there. And I now banish ´shoulds´! So, (since I have a lot of spare time) if my thoughts were to be condensed into a city it would be....Phuket! So, I´m heading to the BEACH (via Oaxaca City)!! Yeeha! With this thought my rather gloomy mood was lightened, it´s my darn trip. Thankfully my bodyclock is still adjusting so by 7am I was locked, loaded and mentally ready for the Metro! I paid ... read more

I hope I get to stay here forever! I've been busy this weekend and now home and need to wash clothes, dishes and apartment before I leave for Valladolid (the plant) in the morning. Don't want the housekeeper to find a dirty house! Will be at the plant for several days and don't know if I'll have internet service, so if any of you email me and I don't answer you'll know why. And I love everyone's emails so keep 'em coming. I do miss all of you - even in paradise. :) I'm taking enough clothes (poor guys I'm going to the plant with) that if our work takes us through Friday, I may just rent a car (somewhere) and go to Cancun or Playa del Carmen. May decide to go there for the weekend ... read more

After Belize we travelled a full day to Tulum and spent a couple nights there. one night was in a hostel dorm (with AC, ahhh, yes!). then we went to the beach for the second night and planned to stay there a few days, but only made it through one night. That was probably the worst sleeping conditions on our trip. I got eaten alive by mosquitos and did not sleep a wink. the air was so hot and stale, despite the wind on the beach. we quickly packed up and came to Playa del Carmen to regroup. The Tulum beaches were vast and beautiful. we decided to have a day of shade to sooth our sunburns, only to get even more burned! we're spending the last few days here in Playa just chillin. its quite ... read more

Hi everyone, Well this is really a nice change from my adventures trekking around the globe... picked up Redina from airport on thursday evening and brought her down to Playa del Carmen, about an hour south of Cancun... We stayed overnite and then went back up the coast to a place called Puerto Morelos, had a nice lunch at Mama's Bakery and lay on the beach... I got a much needed haircut, and we went back to Playa and had an incredible lobster dinner!! Slept in this morning and then jumped in the car and headed further south to Akumal, which is just before you get to the ruins in Tulum... it is off-season here and we got a 2 bedroom HUGE villa right on the beautiful sandy beach that is $340 US per night in ... read more

Zimapan This weekend we decided it was time to venture into the Sierra Gorda mountain range. Along the northern edge of the state of Queretaro, are the Sierra Gordas. An amazing culmination of canyons, rivers, jungles, mountains and desert, it is an area profoundly effected by the forces of nature. The temperatures at the highest points (10,000 feet above sea level) can be below freezing, the deepest canyons (900 feet above sea level) can register temperatures of up to 110º F. At the upper elevations, the terrain is forested. At the lower elevations, it is tropical and hot, and the landscape is comprised of both rocky gorges and jungle vegetation. The driving in this part of the state of Querétaro is slow moving. The road through the Sierra Gorda winds and twists in such a way ... read more

I often say, “ The Eagle has landed”, whenever I land from a flight - well now I mean it. That’s right poppets, Brooks went Sky Diving. I decided that I wanted to do something that was so extreme and so memorable that I couldn’t resist. And then the thought came to me. SKY DIVING. Why not!! I had been talking about wanting to go sky diving for some time with my friends on the ship but never actually thought I could get the nerve to go. When I was at Star Centre, Jeanette and Marlize went, and when I heard about it I knew I had to go. A lot of people were skeptical, scared and thought it was an over the top experience to have. And one would think with what I have ... read more

NYC/Mexico City. I arrived! My first few nights were booked ahead in Hotel Mallorca where they speak no Ingles so my Spanish was unleashed on them on checkin, welcoming they were not. On my first expedition for food I discovered (after getting momentarily lost) my hotel was incorrectly placed in my Lonely Planet map, I thought I was in the hip Condesa district but where I was was *so* ghetto!! Imagine unclean streets, honking cars, mangy dogs, urban decay...the usual. I was 30 mins walk to Centrico Historico, I couldn´t brave the buses or the minivans yet, these legs are made for walkin´. On Saturday my impression of MC was much improved, I explored the Templar Mayor ruins where the Aztecs sacrificed 20,000 citizens in 1487 as offerings then after all that death I took ... read more

Places to stay Maison Lafitte hotel PLACES TO VISIT/SEE anthropology Museum Merida From Chichen Itza to Merida and on to the Hotel Maison Lafitte, which will be our home for the next two days. The town has very narrow streets, and each street alternates a one-way direction. Being a tourist, learning this system was very helpful. With a million residents, Merida is the largest city on the Yucatan. After settling at the hotel we visited the Museum of Anthropology. This museum houses one of the finest collections of Mayan artifacts in the Yucatan. It is an excellent complement to a visit to any of the archaeological si... read more
