Whether your idea of vacation is sipping margaritas at a resort on the Yucatan Peninsula, trekking through ancient Aztec or Mayan archeological ruins, taking a Spanish immersion course, or testing your limits by sampling a spicy taco from one of the cities' local food carts, a visit to Mexico imparts every traveler with enduring memories. This far-reaching Latin American country is rich in history and culture and its people are proud and passionate about everything from their traditions and festivals to their love of football (soccer).

Though still marked by wide economic inequality, the country seems to be pushing a recovery through a recent call to action on the part of its president for Mexicans to “rediscover the country’s marvelous natural riches” and make Mexico a leading tourist destination. Mexican society in the cities seems to be well on its way to fostering a cosmopolitan lifestyle in the way of dining, entertainment and education. And so, travel information on destinations throughout Mexico is widely available and travel within the country is fairly easy via plane, bus or car. But beware, Federales are notorious for pulling over foreign drivers and extorting a fee in exchange for not hauling you off to jail.

Highlights

 • Cabo San Lucas A popular holiday destination with beautiful beaches.
 • Chichén Itzá These famous Mayan ruins are considered one of he world's mysterious wonders.
 • Oaxaca Rich in culture, architecture, festivities and food, the state of Oaxaca and its capital have a lot to offer.

Tips and Hints

 •  Learn a few helpful phrases in Spanish. Many people speak some English in the resort areas but it's less likely in rural or small towns.
 •  Don't drink the tap water.

El dia do los muertos. A favourite part of repeated contracts on the cruise ships for me is getting to meet up with friends from previous ships. I’m into my final two weeks on the Ecstasy (my replacement, Brian, has arrived and I’ve begun his intro training) but I’ve got a few exciting reunions during these last days. Today in Cozumel was one: I got to meet up with my friend Erica, who I worked with this past winter on the Fantasy. Cozumel has been a staple port for me during these three years at sea. When I transfer in 2 weeks time, there will be [View Full Entry]

We hit the ground running, that is after sitting on the tarmac for an hour while our plane's communication system got fixed. In a city this size always has something going on at any hour, so we are walking all and dropping at night. First surprise was were the "Alebrijes" on the sidewalks of Reforma: weird creatures some ten feet high. Pedro Linares started out as a common papier mache artist who eked out a living on the outskirts of Mexico City by making traditional piñatas, carnival masks, and Judas dolls for local fiestas. In the 1930s, he broke from tradition [View Full Entry]

The Sunday after the wedding (see previous blog) we went on a bus ride to Mexico City - it was excellent, we practically had business class aeroplane seats and 2 x movies - fantastic! After a short taxi ride across town we arrived at yet another lovely hotel (Condesa Haus, I would highly recommend it) which had a four legged bath in the room, in the very pretty suburb of Condesa. Sadly we found out we were in for 3 days of (light) rain in Mexico City ... never mind. We started our first day by waiting 45mins for the Turibus, [View Full Entry]

Mexico Time http://bajatrek.com On the road down Baja California Mexico you get a glimpse into the every day life of people, what they do, how they live, where they live. To most it seems incredible that a different culture and way of life exists merely 50 feet from the international border. You cross it and you’re immediately plunged into a different world. Even the hustle and bustle feels different. Then you go further south and wide stretches of nothing and nowhere keep getting even wider between towns that seem to get smaller and less populated. You get this feeling that [View Full Entry]

We have landed in sunny Cancun for a week of R&R before we tackle South America and the final months left of our journey. After going through immigration and then pressing the magic button to see if you are to have a customs check or not we headed to the land of all inclusive food and alcohol we share 7 days with loud, obnoxious, self absorbed Americans. Our first morning we were taken to one of the sister properties for breakfast but as well all know there is no such thing as a free meal. Once fed we were taken [View Full Entry]
